Chapter 57: Public Anger
"Taylor, you're crazy!"
Sera rushed over to support Su Mian, tears welling up instantly. Adrian pulled Taylor away forcefully.
Other players were scared and stayed in place, but more or less all had doubts about Su Mian.
Yes, believing her based on just a vague doodle was a bit far-fetched.
"Don't be anxious! Wait until the City-State players are sent in, and we'll think of a way together. This might be part of the script—"
"You're right."
A hoarse female voice interrupted Bruce.
She raised her head tiredly, wiping the blood from the corner of her mouth in a leisurely manner, adding a touch of sickly and abused beauty to her pale skin, like rouge seeping into the snow.
Taylor stood in place, anger filling his brain, causing his chest to heave violently, but his mood suddenly became flustered when he bumped into those eyes.
"You... what did you say?"
Su Mian looked at Taylor. "I've been thinking about a question these past few days."
"Why were all the players caught, but there are no plot points or clues here?"
"Why, when they were also confirmed to be infected with the plague, did the City-State players not come here?"
"I've figured it out."
She looked toward the only window in the room, her expression indifferent. The triangular-roofed building outside the window was the only thing that could be seen in the room.
Above the window lattice was a wheat ear emblem. Later, in the soldiers' idle chatter, she learned that next to the quarantine zone was the town's sanatorium.
"To improve the efficiency of clearing the instance, high-level players want to reduce the game time by killing low-level players. Regardless of whether this knife hits the murderer, it is extremely beneficial to them."
"Only half of the players being harmed just goes to show that this isn't the instance's handiwork, but a plan orchestrated by high-level players."
The crowd was in an uproar, then whispered to each other, but after this, everyone wasn't sure if what the girl said was right.
Taylor's expression became somewhat complicated. He frowned and walked to Su Mian's side.
"How can you be sure that all of this was done by those high-level players?"
"Could it be that we're just unlucky?"
Sera helped Su Mian speak in a low voice. Su Mian shook her head with a light laugh.
"I wasn't very sure, but on the night the Saintess died, I believe you all saw Oli."
That servant beside Cecily, who was also a member of the City-State players.
The crowd looked left and right, almost all nodding. They had indeed all seen Oli.
"He seemed to be saying something... that someone died, and we couldn't wash up, etc."
"That's it."
Su Mian panted lightly, her eyelids lifting lazily. "When returning to Millford that day, two nuns bumped into me, and I smelled lavender."
Once these words were out, the air was silent for a second. The players who reacted gasped.
"The soap used in the villagers' homes... seems to be lavender-scented, right?"
Someone said weakly. Su Mian nodded.
"Yes, so there is no such saying at all. It was the City-State players who sent people to notify us as a group, and the holy water turning black is clearly some kind of chemical reaction."
"We passed through the mine and might have been stained with minerals. These dusts have a high probability of changing color when they interact with chemical liquids."
"They might have known a long time ago. After all, there is a herbalist among the City-State players. Her script very likely clearly wrote the principle of holy water turning black, but she didn't make this clue public."
"Instead, she used it to do more extreme things, which is to clear out unimportant players and speed up the game progress."
Listening to the girl's incisive analysis, everyone was dumbfounded. She continued:
"And besides us, there is a player from Millford outside who didn't participate in the purification rite, so she wasn't caught and brought here with us."
Sera widened her eyes. "You mean... Adele!"
As soon as the words fell, the sound of a door opening came from the entrance. Between two soldiers was a girl wearing a pink Sorket dress, with her hair parted in the middle and braided.
A metal hair net wrapped around the rich pearl-embroidered fabric, highlighting the visitor's softness and nobility.
"Miss Adele, this is the person you want to see."
Adele covered her mouth with a frown the whole time. Seeing the soldiers leave, she walked quickly to the iron railing.
"Yifening, those few high-level players entered the sanatorium next to you the day before yesterday and left Millford this morning. The servants under them inquired and said they returned to the City-State."
Once these words were out, everyone couldn't sit still. Adele's words not only confirmed that everything Su Mian said was true but also aroused their anger and hostility.
"What the hell? What good does this do them?!"
"Holy shit, are they sick? Isn't our life a life?"
"Also infected with the plague, why do they get to enter the sanatorium while we enter the quarantine zone?"
"Should low-level players die just because they have no power or influence?!"
The sound of arguing continued. Su Mian watched this scene quietly.
Three days ago, when they were about to leave the Mill River, Su Mian found Adele and told her that if anything happened to the players in Millford, she must help them keep a close eye on the City-State players' whereabouts.
As early as when Tiffany and the others wanted to win her over, Su Mian knew what they wanted to do, so she left a hand ahead of time.
It was just that she didn't expect the conspiracy to come so quickly. She also almost thought that the holy water turning black was just a plot point, so she desperately looked for clues in the quarantine zone.
And just one oversight almost left all the Millford players with no place to be buried.
They weren't sick, but they stayed in the sanatorium for a full three days, just to determine the final destination of this group of low-level players.
Baptism Day was the final deadline; they were bound to die.
The City-State players who knew this news clearly had the absolute ability to protect people, yet they left leisurely, clearly wanting them to die.
They had long known what would happen after the purification rite ended. Thinking in a worse direction, maybe they knew the method to make the holy water turn black.
And coming to win over Adrian and Su Mian that day was because they felt they came from the City-State themselves and might also possess some power and rights, so they chose to win them over.
Maybe if they had agreed to their invitation at that time, Su Mian and Adrian would have been saved.
But now is not the time to complain. They have to find a way to get out of here.
Then go to the City-State to find Cecily's residence and find Adrian's father. He is the most important person to prove the plague pathogen and may also be the key to unlocking Cecily's death.
Just as public anger was hard to offend, Su Mian glanced at Taylor and suddenly frowned, forcing herself to shed tears.
"My body is not good to begin with."
"Just now... I don't know if I can hold on until tomorrow."
One stone stirred up a thousand waves. The crowd, already eager to vent, immediately focused their eyes on Taylor. Taylor felt a chill, his Adam's apple rolled, and he stepped back slowly.
"Are you shameless, hitting a girl!"
"Exactly, if Yifening leaves, who else can save us?!"
Once the words fell, they attacked in a group. Don't know who started it, but someone kicked Taylor, and then attacks from all directions came. Mud was smeared on his head, and another slap landed on his left face.
He had no power to fight back, growling as he covered his head, numbly enduring the angry scolding.
Su Mian was still watching the show, thinking that when it was about enough, she would stand up and let them stop, but her head became dizzy, and she fell down unsteadily.
A scream came from Sera beside her.
Damn, overacted. ===== CHAPTER 58 =====
