Chapter 248: Chemical Plant (2)
Current Location: > > >
Using low-voltage direct current to electrolyze wastewater is actually the fastest and most effective way to treat pollution. This method saves all the various chemical "reagents" used to coagulate waste, and the results are good.
However, this method is very expensive: do you know how much one degree of industrial electricity costs? 85 cents! In addition, the sediment separated after electrolysis is difficult to process and reuse, which is also a problem.
None of these drawbacks are a problem for the Transmigrators.
First is energy.
With the destruction of large numbers of pirates along the Fujian coast, the Southern Fujian coal-producing belt, represented by areas like Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, Nanping, and Longyan, will usher in a golden opportunity for rapid development.
The scattered coal mining industries, which were already slowly picking up speed, will next be bathed in Holy Light — the local mine owners and Old Wealth will receive investment from the backers, giving them the capability to recruit manpower and expand their industrial scale.
At the same time, the Mobile Corps Commander General's Office will next smooth things over with the government offices in every prefecture and county, dispatching troops as a public service to help the locals eliminate Bandits, dredge waterways, establish mining docks, and open up the external shipping channels for Fujian's various ores, including coal.
In this way, combined with the oil gradually being produced in Miaoli, the Kiln District will be far more flexible in its energy use going forward, unafraid of the massive electrical consumption of the wastewater plant.
Also, regarding the sediment after electrolysis: in fact, with the Kiln District's weak chemical capabilities, it is fundamentally impossible to reuse waste materials the way later generations did. Whether these materials are easy to handle or not, they will ultimately have to be buried.
Therefore, the wastewater electrolysis Equipment will have to be put into operation sooner or later. This wastewater treatment method, which doesn't require large amounts of chemical "reagents," is the most suitable for the current situation. Of course, the prerequisite is that the Transmigrators must have the ability to produce enough metal electrodes and cables themselves... In terms of timing, this process will still have to wait a while.
The Black Stone Gulch Chemical Plant complex has three parts in total.
What the Visiting Delegation is currently touring is Workshop 1, which occupies the largest area. This is a comprehensive workshop, and its main task at present is producing basic compounds, including the Three Acids and Two Alkalis.
After integrating some of the early simple Equipment used to produce acids and alkalis, Workshop 1 is now a forest of towers and tanks, with dense networks of pipes everywhere, indistinguishable from those medium-sized chemical plants of later generations.
And aside from a cursory glance around the plant, the visiting group didn't make any Brainless directives. After all, most people don't know much about this; the average person gets dizzy just looking at those dense Stainless Steel pipes.
In addition to the shared absorption towers, synthesis towers, distillation towers, heat exchangers, converters, fluidized bed roasters, waste heat boilers, and so on, specialized Equipment for producing Sulfuric Acid, like sulfur-burning furnaces, is also installed in the plant area. Also, Supporting Facilities including a Reservoir and worker dormitories have all been completed nearby.
After passing through the long Workshop 1, the troops walked through an airtight door and entered Workshop 2.
Workshop 2 is a precision workshop, with an area only half that of Workshop 1. It is responsible for converting the basic raw materials produced by the former into products.
For example: when Workshop 1 produces the Three Acids and Two Alkalis, and then extracts benzene from raw materials like coal gas and tar, Workshop 2 will use Nitric Acid and benzene to produce aniline, and then use the aniline to produce the Great Killer, Sulfonamide.
So, to some extent, Workshop 2 is a chemical workshop, a pharmaceutical factory, and a dye factory all at once — aniline is the core component of many chemical dyes. Under these circumstances, the precision and cleanliness of Workshop 2's instruments have been correspondingly improved.
And when the large group of people walked into Workshop 2, with its eye-catching yellow painted lines and plastic flooring, a familiar scent immediately hit them.
"Huh? Isn't this just Mr. White's drug lab?"
"Yeah, yeah, so familiar. Look at this big soup pot, Mr. White jumped right in to clean it."
"Look here, look here, this set on the table can brew Coffee, the vacuum kind, it's really good!"
Workshop 2, whose style closely resembled the underground lab in Breaking Bad, instantly stirred the distant memories of the Transmigrators.
And Hong Xu, who had been diligently acting as tour guide, was now dumbfounded: everyone, including Cao Chuan, had automatically scattered, gathering around the Equipment they recognized and starting to make comments and critiques.
First, someone dramatically knocked on that huge Stainless Steel high-pressure reaction kettle, then imitated the tone from the show: "Hear that? That sound is quality. Top-notch for cooking chemicals! Probably made by a German."
A group of people nodded in agreement.
However, a certain person standing nearby had a very unpleasant look on his face at that moment. Hearing this layman spouting nonsense, Hong Xu, who had always held a sacred reverence for his work and Equipment, was now fantasizing about throwing this guy into the kettle first, then turning on the agitator at the bottom, blending the meat into paste, and then using the pressure of several hundred kPa to cook the bastard, bones and all...
Before he could break free from his fantasy, something even more disgusting happened.
A bunch of guys gathered around the lab bench first had a warm and enthusiastic Discussion about the deliciousness of vacuum-distilled Coffee, as if they had ever drunk any; then these guys began solemnly demanding that Hong Xu "cook up a few catties of Blue Ice" first, so they could sell it to the Dutch to make some quick cash...
Someone else nearby magnanimously consoled him: "Lower purity is fine too, no need to be as high as Mr. White's."
... Rolling his eyes, Hong Xu helplessly began to explain: "When Mr. White was preparing his 'product,' he poured aluminum powder in by the bag, used methylamine freely, and had so much hydrofluoric acid he used it to dissolve people... What do we have?"
At this point, Hong Xu couldn't help but feel sorrow welling up in his heart: "We have jack shit! A single test tube of reagent, one bottle of pure water, all need me to start from scratch to prepare it. And you still want to get high? Get high on your mother! Get lost, all of you get lost!"
... When a somewhat wildly arrogant scholar-type loses his temper, he recognizes no one, not even the Emperor himself would do any good.
And so, the bunch of laymen who mistook a high-pressure reaction kettle for a soup pot were chased out of the workshop by a certain roaring individual... The main thing was, this guy was waving a brown Glass bottle in his hand containing a suspicious liquid, so no one dared to argue with him. Then the tour ended anticlimactically like that, and the group didn't even get to visit Workshop 3, which was specifically responsible for electrolysis...
Workshop 3's area is similar to Workshop 2's, and its Equipment mainly consists of electrolytic cells, with other basic infrastructure like electroplating tanks, water washing tanks, and acid washing tanks also installed.
Back when the Kiln District was first being built, in order to provide a few essential chemical products for the entire system, Hong Xu and his team had imported some chemical Equipment. But this import method was completely unplanned, scattered and unsystematic, barely solving the problem of whether they had a small amount of chemical products or not.
Now that a proper factory has been built, those previously scattered pieces can be put in their proper places.
