Chapter 139: Ghost 2

~8 min read 1,503 words

A spatial rift suddenly formed behind Du Zhengyi; Du Zhengyi dodged to the side, and a pool of water leading to the void formed where he had been standing, deep enough to trap an ambusher.

Du Zhengyi leaped toward the nearest tree branch, and as soon as his feet landed, he turned around, ready to attack his opponent. He hadn't truly expected a single trap to work, but there was no one behind him.

It was not a Mage who emerged after the spatial rift opened; a snake-like shadow flashed out from the rift, propelled itself into mid-air with its own body, and slithered directly toward Du Zhengyi.

Du Zhengyi had not expected anyone to not pause after traversing out of the Subspace, but instead open another spatial rift directly; this was truly insane, as the slightest mistake while moving between spaces would cause a person to vanish into thin air.

He was unsure what the thing that had been launched at him was; no one would play with snakes at a time like this. That thing must be a Bionic Weapon created by a Mage, its composition unknown. Almost instinctively, he also escaped into space and vanished into the air.

Majiang watched nervously as Du Zhengyi used his ability again. Just as he was guessing where Du Zhengyi would appear, Du Zhengyi suddenly appeared in front of him, appearing almost pressed against him. The moment Du Zhengyi appeared, a flash of electric light surged between his hands. Guan Xinyue screamed, her hair and skirt floating up as if they were at the center of a Thunderstorm.

Following her scream, the Thunderstorm exploded with earth-shattering force. She crouched down, covering her ears tightly. Majiang stood still, but he also watched this massive energy explosion with awe. Within the Thunderstorm field, a spatial rift appeared at the same moment the Thunderstorm exploded; the spatial rift was severely distorted, and a figure rolled onto the ground, clearly also injured.

Du Zhengyi understood his tactics: attacking the Mage with the highest energy here would not succeed in one go, so the first attack was simply a feint. His targets were the other two who were easier to deal with. In a duel against a Mage with the ability of Spatial Teleportation, one could rely on almost nothing but tactical thinking. Du Zhengyi rushed toward the same position at almost the same time, seizing the initiative by half a step this time.

Unfortunately, Du Zhengyi dared not maintain his energy at peak levels for long, and he had to stop once the Thunderstorm had taken effect. However, he had already dealt a ruthless blow; he had never encountered an instance where someone could maintain normal vital signs after encountering a Thunderstorm while emerging from space. Generally speaking, this was almost equivalent to direct murder, but his current situation left him no choice but to use a lethal move.

After the smoke and dust of the Thunderstorm dissipated, a human body was revealed curled up by the stream. Only then did they see the filthy coat on his body and his messy, medium-length hair.

Du Zhengyi took a step forward, and Majiang reminded him from the side, "Still alive."

Du Zhengyi nodded slightly, raising a bit of power in his right hand.

"Is he a lunatic?" Majiang asked in a low voice, "Can I probe his Yajian..."

"No," Du Zhengyi raised his hand to signal him to step back, "He might be a wandering schizophrenic, attracted here by the Energy Field. Do not touch his Yajian."

Majiang took a step back and reached out to pull Guan Xinyue, "Are you okay?"

"I..." Guan Xinyue gripped Majiang's hand tightly, her face pale, her eyes blank from excessive shock.

Majiang suddenly felt something was wrong, "What's wrong?"

Guan Xinyue's teeth chattered together. She seemed unable to be sure, her voice trembling to the point of a whisper, "He is touching my ankle..."

Majiang was startled; there was a full meter of distance between Guan Xinyue and that lunatic. Du Zhengyi, however, rushed over violently. He simultaneously condensed dark blades from the void and shot them into the grass by Guan Xinyue's feet. Several ice-blue snakes were cut into segments. In her fear, Guan Xinyue wisely did not turn back to look; she lunged toward Majiang, and Majiang immediately grabbed her and retreated rapidly.

The Mage cowering under the coat jumped up, laughing at Du Zhengyi, and leaped backward, keeping a distance from Du Zhengyi. Du Zhengyi only had to look at him once to know that his agility was no less than his own. Du Zhengyi flashed out behind him and stabbed a blade toward his back, but he twisted his body like a snake, clenched his hand into a fist, and swung toward Du Zhengyi with the glint of a sharp weapon flashing between his fingers.

Du Zhengyi dodged to the side. The Mage's fist opened, and a surge of energy flowed from his body to his hand. Du Zhengyi turned and escaped into the Subspace, flashing out on the other side of the Mage. Seeing that the man had perfect control over his power, Du Zhengyi dodged, and the power he had intended to release was retracted. Du Zhengyi appeared behind him, but the man stepped forward instead, stepping back into the spatial rift.

This was a very tricky enemy. Du Zhengyi panted slightly, calculating all his possible appearance points and sensing every subtle energy fluctuation. A full few dozen seconds passed, and everything was calm.

"He is not nearby," Du Zhengyi finally said. As soon as his voice fell, the humidity between the valley forest suddenly became much more severe.

Du Zhengyi frowned. He wanted Guan Xinyue and Majiang to leave; the change was about to happen. But even if they left, they could not outrun a Mage capable of Teleportation; there was simply no perfect solution.

However, within a few breaths, the damp air turned into fog. Wisps of white mist drilled out from between the water, behind the trees, and in the grass like slithering snakes. The fog created by the Mage soon shrouded the forest.

Du Zhengyi knew that once the heavy fog rose, he would be even more passive. He could only move closer to Guan Xinyue's direction. Even if he was passive, he could only remain in a defensive state.

Guan Xinyue let out a desperate sob. The white mist swallowed the forest, and the damp air crept into her clothes; the disgusting, sticky feeling gave her goosebumps. The fog was still thickening, and soon she would be unable to see anything.

Du Zhengyi blocked in front of her, and Majiang stood behind her. She covered her mouth and waited quietly.

Suddenly, Du Zhengyi cursed in front of her. He turned his head violently, and she reflexively turned her head as well, only to be shocked to find that there was another person behind Majiang, mimicking their stance with great seriousness. The eerie sense of absurdity made Guan Xinyue almost scream. She jumped to the side in panic; that figure was standing right against Majiang, yet Majiang was completely unaware.

Seen through by Du Zhengyi, the ghost-like Mage only let out a sharp laugh. Guan Xinyue, however, suddenly saw that he was holding a knife in his hand, pointing it at the back of Majiang's heart. This time, Guan Xinyue screamed out loud.

Majiang was blocking the ghost completely. In his urgency, Du Zhengyi threw a Fireball toward Majiang. Relying on his years of dealing with him, although Majiang didn't know what was behind him, he remained steady and trusted Du Zhengyi enough to suddenly lower his head, avoiding the Fireball.

Du Zhengyi didn't even look to see if his attack had caused damage to the high-energy Mage. He had no time to catch his breath and rushed directly behind Guan Xinyue. A shadow had just formed behind Guan Xinyue before it suddenly vanished.

Du Zhengyi was secretly shocked. For the first time in his life, he had encountered another expert in manipulating distance. This time he was too late to turn around; a sharp blade stabbed in from behind him, and intense pain spread from his body. Fortunately, almost all Mages' close-quarters attacks were about speed, and Mages were all too dangerous, so no Mage dared to approach each other closely for a long time. Once the Mage landed a hit, he let out a sharp laugh and retreated.

He did not go far; he was pathologically entangling them, attempting new attacks. Du Zhengyi stood ready, but something distracted the ghost. Almost at the same time, Du Zhengyi also heard clear footsteps coming in from the heavy fog.

Du Zhengyi knew that must be Luo Qi; it must have been the sound that attracted him over. He became anxious; Luo Qi should not have come at this time.

Luo Qi was running almost straight toward this side, shouting as he ran, "Guan Xinyue, run! Majiang, take her and run, run quickly!"
