Chapter 320: The Mage of the Main Hall
Luo Qi spent his first day at the Highland Mage's residence, spending most of his time with Du Zhengyi analyzing all known circumstances and the "personality" of Clownfish. When it came down to it, their research interest in the Lotus Burner was always focused on Clownfish, even more so than on that Leader who carried a small red umbrella. There was a part of the reason they never discussed: Clownfish was the very person who had severely wounded Du Zhengyi.
Later, they called out Mahjong and Guan Xinyue to walk around with them. After experiencing a period of unstable life, the Highland Mage's territory was very soothing to the heart. The master here was arrogant but not rude, turning a blind eye to their actions. They had absolute freedom here, and the four of them basically occupied the entire massive building and four magical gardens.
There was no library in the building, but at Mahjong's request, they were given the Secret Language, allowing them to summon a book list in any small reception room or the main hall along the eight corridors; the text in the books would appear out of thin air. Luo Qi guessed that there were also some crystals in the library that stored the Highland Mage's knowledge, placed in all public spaces. The cultural customs of the Highland Mage were less inclined toward humans; they were like an isolated island on this planet, quietly preserving more of the traditional life of Mages.
The main hall was the core of this building, both in terms of architectural layout and size. When they were touring the main hall together, Luo Qi noticed that the space occupied by Kawa earlier when he was tidying up the flowers, which had been enclosed by a three-sided screen, had been opened up. The screen had been removed, revealing the indoor fountain in the center of the hall.
Kawa spent most of his time meditating near the fountain. Guan Xinyue gathered her courage to ask him for some daily necessities for girls. The Highland Mage's attitude toward humans was no different from his attitude toward the rest of them. He might not have given the girl any smiles, but he tried hard to understand all the needs of a human girl. He listened quietly to her descriptions and gave her as many various substitutes as possible that could satisfy her requirements.
To be honest, Luo Qi was quite happy to squat on the side and watch the half-naked Highland Mage ask Guan Xinyue about the possible ingredients and expected effects of skincare lotion; he experienced a very displaced sense of magical humor. Especially when he discovered that Guan Xinyue was clearly exaggerating the effects of department store cosmetics. In this situation, she was like a little devil, and the Highland Mage was as pure as a little elf doing manual labor. He spent a long time deep in thought about the lotion ingredients, summoning many magical materials to synthesize different skincare products. Luo Qi simply couldn't bear to watch anymore.
Luo Qi felt that the Highland Mage was actually even more tolerant toward humans.
The furniture in the main hall was relatively sparse, and Luo Qi discovered that the furniture was not fixed. Every time he went to the main hall, the furnishings inside were different. Later, he realized that it was because Kawa was using the energy in the main hall to clean the furniture; he would set out a portion of the furniture each time, clean it, and then put it away. The Mage World had its own kind of Cleaning Magic, of course, not the kind of children's fantasy where one used willpower to control a brush to sweep dust off a cabinet. One could do it that way, but the energy required was simply too great, far less efficient than rolling up one's sleeves and doing it oneself.
Luo Qi had been familiar with this kind of Cleaning Magic since he was a child; it required crystals, it required the Secret Language, and it did not require water. When he was a child, he was so accustomed to it that he wouldn't think about what the principles of this Cleaning Magic were. However, when he stood there bored, watching an old blanket gradually become clean, he would think a bit more. Especially since he had once made up his mind to live in the human world, he habitually viewed all of this with a human mindset. Somehow, he thought of the latest popular human sonic vibration toothbrush. When his hand brushed over the old blanket, his train of thought broadened a little; perhaps it wasn't necessarily sound waves vibrating, perhaps it was something else, but vibration would have a cleaning effect. If a human from the Qin Dynasty saw the current human sonic toothbrush or X-ray technology, they might treat it as magic, right? So science was human magic, but it was a pity that human magic was not yet strong enough; otherwise, Mahjong might have gone to cooperate with human doctors, and perhaps there would still be room for maneuver regarding Du Zhengyi's problem from a medical perspective.
The furniture in the main hall gradually disappeared after being cleaned. By the time Luo Qi walked into the main hall at night, the hall was basically empty, leaving only the fountain in the middle, the decorations on the four walls, and the things the Highland Mage was using while meditating. Kawa was like a butler cleaning the room while no one was around. Luo Qi walked around the hall and suddenly thought that the furniture here could be temporarily replaced and changed according to the different needs of the residents here.
Luo Qi really had no complaints about this place, except that the food wasn't very good and the only drink available was water.
Although there was only one Highland Mage here, almost everyone felt that it was very safe here, probably infected by the calm attitude of that single Highland Mage. Luo Qi felt slightly differently. He waited until everyone had gone back to rest before returning to the main hall, just wanting to have a talk with the Highland Mage.
Luo Qi walked straight to the opposite side of the meditating Highland Mage and sat down easily. "Hey, Kawa, I want to ask you, how is your investigation going regarding that figure in the corridor this morning?"
Kawa opened his eyes, and a few candles were burning in the candelabra beside him. "I did not sense any other person here, so there is no need for an inspection."
"That's a bit too imprudent, isn't it?" Luo Qi said, rubbing his knees.
The Highland Mage looked at him. "You checked; were there any results?"
Luo Qi looked at him with some wariness, feeling as if he had been caught, but he dismissively brushed off this bit of unpleasantness. "The result of our check is that there really was something in that corridor. So, will you continue to check?"
"I did not sense any other person here, so there is no need for an inspection." Kawa repeated his words with some haughtiness, and after finishing, he closed his eyes.
Luo Qi stood up from the carpet. "I guess when humans first landed on an uninhabited island, those dim-witted native animals thought the same thing. Later, they were eaten."
The Highland Mage opened his eyes, not angry at all; cultivation was indeed not practiced in vain. "I do not understand what you mean. Is it a threat?"
"Me?" Luo Qi said. "Threatening you?"
The Highland Mage thought for a moment. "You do not constitute a threat."
"Right, so this is called sarcasm." Luo Qi turned and left after saying that; he was already used to not counting on others.
