Chapter 378: Crossing Over
Guan Xinyue was sprinting through the grand hall, sweeping past a row of clay statues with varied forms and ferocious expressions. She was drenched in sweat, her heart beating so fast she felt like vomiting, relying on a single breath to sustain her flight, silently praying that this room had other exits.
Just as she ran past one of the statues, she suddenly realized that the corner of her eye seemed to have caught something.
Guan Xinyue stopped, gasping for air; because of the overexertion, her vision was filled with golden sparks, and she felt dizzy as she struggled to focus. To display majesty, ancient architecture always featured towering domes, and the Light Magic from the retro lamps was very limited, leaving dark corners everywhere created by the grandeur and the idols.
She looked around anxiously; every corner the light could not reach seemed to have spirits whispering in it. Suddenly, she saw the arm of a clay statue move.
The high-strung Guan Xinyue screamed in fright and took off running.
Just then, a familiar voice whispered in her ear, "Stay here, don't move."
She knew it was Luo Qi speaking; the voice was extremely faint, like words heard in a dream, and she couldn't judge whether she had actually heard the sound or if she simply knew the voice existed.
The time was too short for her to even wonder if the speaker was really Luo Qi; she hesitated for a moment, and then her gaze was drawn to a new situation—either her eyes were playing tricks on her, or the wall behind the statue was truly melting.
Her heart jumped into her throat; she hesitated for three seconds between running and staying, while the protruding shape on the melting wall became increasingly distinct, as if it were a human figure. She let out a whimper in her throat, her legs turning to jelly, and the human protrusion rapidly materialized; a person was about to be born from the wall.
But it also looked like the wall had turned into a layer of viscous liquid, and a person was about to step out of that liquid.
In the moment of panic, Guan Xinyue couldn't be sure what she was seeing; could she imagine this as the slow-motion version of Du Zhengyi using Teleportation to pass through a wall? She couldn't answer that; after staying with Luo Qi for so long, her train of thought was becoming increasingly unreliable. Regardless, she made her emergency response: she ripped off the mini backpack she had been carrying, the only thing she could throw, and smashed the bag hard against the thing emerging from the wall.
"Oh Xinyue, what are you doing?"
Her vision blurred; she didn't see the disgusting adult dripping with amniotic fluid she had imagined. Standing before her was the clean Doctor, holding her bag, looking at her in confusion.
"Damn it!" She couldn't help but curse as rudely as these men; what on earth was going on? The Doctor acted as if him popping out of a wall wasn't strange at all. Didn't he know what was happening here? Couldn't he see the bizarre scene behind her?
The Doctor indeed did not look behind her; his expression was calm and focused. If Guan Xinyue had to say, he was still somewhat unusual. The idle Doctor was usually a bit absent-minded, and only when he was treating a patient was he calm and focused, just like he was now. The way the Doctor entered his working state was always very convincing; he knew exactly what he was doing. Guan Xinyue said nothing; she reached her trembling hand toward the Doctor. The Doctor didn't say a word; he grabbed Guan Xinyue's arm and firmly pulled her toward the wall with him.
Guan Xinyue screamed silently and hysterically walked into the wall, hoping she wouldn't turn two-dimensional.
The wall looked like liquid, but when she actually walked into it, there was no feeling of being soaked in a petri dish. Guan Xinyue actually felt nothing; she suspected that for a period after entering, her senses had been stripped away. By the time Guan Xinyue's senses returned, she already had one foot in the snow.
The biting wind lashed at her face, and the cold air stung her lungs. She stared blankly at the vast white world and took her first step forward, but her knees gave way and she fell to the ground. The Doctor pulled her up. "Are you okay?"
She bit her lip and shook her head.
"Let's go," the Doctor said urgently. "This place will become a battlefield soon."
