Chapter 601: The Disappearing Psychic
Luo Qi believed from the bottom of his heart that Du Zhengyi was a battlefield genius. Someone who could use weapons of mass destruction to blow up a planet was not a genius; someone who could use lamp oil to wipe out monsters and trade extremely low costs for a massive victory was the true battlefield genius. He watched with delight as the Battle Mages carried out Du Zhengyi's methods to the end, and the mere thought of how furious the person behind the planning must be right now made him want to laugh.
It was just a pity that he didn't get to laugh for too long.
A round of three monsters appeared, and the Battle Mages achieved victory using Du Zhengyi's method; three Mages dealt with one monster, balancing offense and defense, their coordination seamless. Using Magic to generate grease and then spraying that grease onto the monsters' flank membranes was really not difficult for these Mages. The Psychics were sweeping the formation from far behind; Luo Qi wanted to attack these Mages more, but they were extremely cautious, and although they lost the monsters, it was hard to do anything to them. After seeing that their battle pets were doomed, one monster and its master appeared at the very rear of the battlefield to take their Mage companions away.
But when they appeared again, Luo Qi was so shocked he couldn't speak. At first glance, Luo Qi thought he was hallucinating, but he felt that the Battle Mages around him also had a suffocating reaction—except for Du Zhengyi, of course. None of these things could trigger a reaction from Du Zhengyi; he watched the swarms of monsters ahead calmly, as if he were staring at a group of Tibetan antelopes.
Luo Qi cursed irritably, annoyed to the point of no return.
"Steady," Du Zhengyi said beside him.
"I am steady," Luo Qi said, exasperated. "But can you stand this? Can you stand this? This is cheating! I thought that method just now was enough."
"Calm down," Du Zhengyi said calmly. "No one can gain the upper hand in one move. It's a matter of ebb and flow, a contest between each other; it's not just about comparing abilities, but also about comparing resilience. Once a war begins, no one can relax until the very end."
"Ao," Luo Qi said furiously, pretending he had accepted Du Zhengyi's lecture.
"Keep your cool, don't be irritable," Du Zhengyi said, then asked, "Are you suffering from oxygen deprivation?"
Luo Qi felt he was doing fine, but Yan Hao interjected from behind him, "Luo Qi, you're still okay? I'm a bit oxygen-deprived; I can barely run anymore."
Du Zhengyi nodded. "Luo Qi hasn't moved, so he should be fine. You all participated in the fighting just now; once you engage in strenuous activity, your oxygen consumption increases."
"What do we do now? There are over twenty of them, more than our own numbers," Yan Hao asked anxiously, already panting due to the lack of oxygen.
"By my count, each of you will have to deal with at least 1.5 of them," Luo Qi said urgently. "In this situation, trying to approach their flanks will definitely lead to injury, and perhaps it won't even succeed at all."
Wen Lin sighed. Before she even started speaking, Luo Qi knew what she was going to say and turned his head to stare at her sternly. Her worried gaze, however, fell entirely on the monsters not far away, and she didn't see Luo Qi's expression. "We must use Space Distortion Magic; it's time."
Luo Qi stared at her. "Oh, can you be sure this is all they have? Who knows what their total number is?"
"We can more or less judge that they intended to use a war of attrition just now, but encountered setbacks and had to change their tactics," Wen Lin said. "Besides, other than doing this, do we have any other options? Who knows how long the low oxygen brought by this storm will last?"
Luo Qi was annoyed to the point of no return. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, Du Zhengyi suddenly interrupted them, "Luo Qi, why are there no Psychics this time?"
"What?" Luo Qi didn't react in time. "What do you mean no Psychics?"
Du Zhengyi glanced at him and asked calmly, "Where are the Psychics?"
"They are right..." Luo Qi turned to look at the monsters. They were several hundred meters away, in the valley floor below the hillside, almost exactly where they had rested last night. The monsters were kicking the ground restlessly, like warhorses in an army ready to set out. However, this army had no commander.
Luo Qi was stunned. This wasn't right. The reason he hadn't noticed they were missing was that he had always been able to feel their presence. In his other field of vision, they truly existed.
Luo Qi steadied his mind and sensed them again before saying with certainty, "The Psychics are right there."
Du Zhengyi trusted his judgment. "But we can't see them..."
Liu Ziyi pulled Guan Xinyue over toward Luo Qi and asked with interest, "Is it... invisibility?"
Luo Qi opened his mouth. Under the tension, he was a bit confused. Another person behind him answered Liu Ziyi's question, "It is not invisibility."
Luo Qi was startled and turned back to see that the person speaking was Wusu.
"What did you say?" Luo Qi looked at him, leaving the monsters behind. "Do you know what invisibility is?"
Wusu glanced at him. "If they could turn invisible, they wouldn't have needed to risk showing themselves just now."
Luo Qi looked at him thoughtfully. What he said made sense, but it wasn't his real answer.
"No time to talk about anything else, the attack is about to begin." Du Zhengyi pulled Luo Qi. The monsters below the slope began a synchronized reaction, as if it were a prelude to an attack.
Yan Hao's attention had been entirely on preparing for battle. "What do we do? I can only hold out for ten minutes in hand-to-hand combat at most; after that, I will definitely slow down."
Luo Qi didn't think about this; his brain was still spinning around the Psychics. He could feel them, they were right there, yet he couldn't see them. If he didn't consider them being invisible... just as Wusu said, invisibility was actually the least likely possibility. And if it really were invisibility, then there was nothing he could do; no one knew how to deal with that kind of tricky situation.
Therefore, the only valuable direction for thought was that they were in that empty valley, but no one could see them. The empty valley... Luo Qi suddenly understood. He had encountered this situation before, only he hadn't increased his mental power at the moment, so he hadn't been able to distinguish the layers...
"Brother," Luo Qi called out, saying bluntly, "They are underground, the Psychics are underground!"
"Underground?" Du Zhengyi was stunned for a moment, then suddenly seemed to realize something. "This is interesting."
"What's interesting?" Luo Qi asked suspiciously; he vaguely guessed that he and Du Zhengyi were thinking the same thing.
Du Zhengyi didn't answer his question and gave a flat summary. "I'll handle them."
Luo Qi was greatly shocked, taken aback by Du Zhengyi's understatement.
"I just happened to think of a little Magic," Du Zhengyi said, glancing at Luo Qi.
"Is that so?" Luo Qi's response could be considered quite sarcastic. "Then why not let the little one do the work instead of such a little Magic?"
Even Yan Hao, an honest person, couldn't help but turn his head to look at Luo Qi, not knowing what was going on. But what made this honest man break down even more was that he discovered Du Zhengyi actually gave a fawning smile, his expression even appearing somewhat awkward, as if he had done something wrong. And that little guy Luo Qi, at this moment, seemed to stand two meters eighty tall, suddenly suppressing the aura of the God of War.
"Teach me this little Magic then," Luo Qi said dryly.
