Chapter 645: The Ancestor's Gift (34)

~7 min read 1,254 words

Du Zhengyi also sensed the activation of the Teleportation Magic. The magical fluctuations occurred briefly, then instantly returned to calm; this turbulence of magic would soon deliver a few Mages. Sometimes Du Zhengyi felt that all of this was like a river transporting pebbles, only this river of magic flowed through different spaces like a hidden underground river.

He himself was like a seasoned traveler; he was familiar with those mysterious underground rivers, and he would set clear Beacons to bring himself to any Other Shore he wished to reach. Sometimes he even suspected he could create rivers out of thin air, but the reality of the situation did not allow him to take risks, so he had not yet experimented with the extreme spaces a river could reach.

But he was still the person most familiar with the river; he silently calculated the time the Mages should Shixian out, habitually counting down. When his timer hit zero, the Teleportation Magic fluctuated subtly as usual, as if a wave had curled up.

Du Zhengyi stared at the place where the Beacon appeared, feeling that tail of a magical wave flicker and return to calm, but this time no figure appeared at the center of the teleportation. Alarm bells rang in Du Zhengyi's heart, and his hand, which had already reached into his pocket for a cigarette, froze. He quickly scanned the area; there was nothing in the spacious room that could truly obscure his vision, and the landing point of the teleportation met the requirements of standard Teleportation Magic. The Beacon was generated automatically, exactly the same as when they arrived.

His peripheral vision caught Clownfish still leaning against the wall, hiding as far back as possible, terrified that the people who teleported in might step on his leather shoes. That is to say, he had not yet realized something was wrong. Du Zhengyi instinctively felt that Clownfish was not faking it, and that he hadn't done anything.

It was the Seal Land itself that had a problem.

Four seconds later than Du Zhengyi—possibly only realizing something was wrong after observing Du Zhengyi—Clownfish suddenly leaped up. "What's going on?" He walked straight to the wall near the Teleportation Point, and while speaking, he had already skillfully pried open the smooth wall skin, pulling out a new Crystal from inside.

Du Zhengyi did not speak; Clownfish's familiarity with Ancient Magic even exceeded that of all the Experimental Mages he knew.

"It is indeed Teleportation Magic, and no other magic was activated." Clownfish said, turning the Crystal over and over to look at it.

"What are you using to read the Crystal?" Du Zhengyi said, while vigilantly observing the magical movements around them.

"Some crude methods." Clownfish said. "I invented them myself."

Du Zhengyi did not speak again. The surrounding environment returned to silence, and the flow of magic was almost imperceptible after stabilizing. There was no one, no unexpected magical flow. He tentatively took a step, his shoe sole making a slight sound on the hard floor—faint and indistinct, as if there were another sound as well.

"If I'm not mistaken..." Clownfish said slowly, still staring at the Crystal, "the Teleportation Magic just now had a physical entity."

Du Zhengyi's heart sank; that is to say, someone had indeed teleported over, but they couldn't see them, and Du Zhengyi couldn't even be sure he had truly "heard" that "sound" with his ears. With almost no delay, his Attack Magic was on the threshold of activation.

Behind him came a series of sounds from Clownfish: "No, no, no, stay calm. We are leaving here immediately. Right now! At once!"

Du Zhengyi hesitated for a moment, but Clownfish had already Shixian-ed outside the door. This time, he clearly perceived pressure bearing down on him. Perhaps Clownfish had felt it head-on just now, which was why he ran so fast.

Du Zhengyi turned around and slowly retreated a step toward the door, and the strange feeling surged up again. As if they were fighting a beast, he moved a step sideways, and suddenly that inexplicable pressure expanded and approached him, stopping right above his head. He looked up, and that strange feeling hovered right beside his face, within inches of him.

"Oh my god," an impatient shout erupted from behind him; it was Clownfish, who had left, pulling a crack in the door from the outside to yell at him. "What are you doing? Waiting for that thing to kiss you?"

"What?" Du Zhengyi was stunned for a moment. The invisible pressure above his head changed shape, and Du Zhengyi felt a potential attack, then retreated out of the room.

The moment the door closed, the feeling of pressure vanished completely.

"Can you see it?" He couldn't help but ask Clownfish, although he felt that asking Clownfish anything at this point was just asking for humiliation; Clownfish had never given him a straight answer to any question.

"I can't see it." Clownfish replied.

At least that counted as a straight answer, and Du Zhengyi had guessed he wouldn't be able to see it either.

"I've encountered this situation a few times in other places." Clownfish added, "No one can see that kind of thing, but you can also be certain of its existence, right."

"Where else have you encountered this situation?" Du Zhengyi seized the key information he cared about more.

Clownfish avoided answering and continued, "That thing won't actively attack people, but I think it has the ability to attack. No, don't open the door again. Its intelligence is very low; it might not actively look for a way out. As long as we keep this door closed, we are safe for the time being. I also don't want to rashly test if it really has the ability to attack. For something we can't see or accurately perceive, its attack might not be in the physical dimension we assume."

"That is to say, that thing didn't actively appear in this place." Du Zhengyi understood his meaning.

"Right, it must have also run into the same situation we just had, accidentally got on the elevator, and was sent here by the Teleportation Magic." Clownfish said, "I think this room might be a small hub connecting many teleportation points, and this thing happened to be sent over. The Ancestor Mages kept many perverted creatures; I hope your little friends won't jump straight into the monster's embrace when they come over later."

"They will make the right judgment." Du Zhengyi said calmly, glancing at Clownfish.

Clownfish seemed to sneer, though his attitude was as ambiguous as his emotions. Sometimes Du Zhengyi could feel his intense malice toward all Mages, but at other times, when truly facing a specific Mage, Clownfish's attitude was very detached. This malice and detachment applied equally when he faced Lotus Burning Mages; he had a uniform attitude toward all Mages. Only when beside Zhao Jiaozhu would he hide himself deeper, so deep that only an eternal, unchanging sorrow remained, like an ascetic with a distant and grand goal.

"The two people who arrived before us likely won't use the Teleportation Magic here. If we search nearby on foot, we might be able to find them." Clownfish said. He paused, as if listening intently. "Did you hear any sound?"

"I heard it." Du Zhengyi said flatly.

"What sound?" Clownfish asked, puzzled.

Du Zhengyi glanced at him. "The sound of plant vines crawling."

Clownfish was startled and looked up; they both looked toward the depths of this corridor.
