Chapter 115: The Dragon-Riding Son-in-Law
Gu Fanglin had not seen Gu Yan for nearly a week.
At the dinner table, he asked casually, "What has Yan-yan been busy with lately?"
Yang Bing did not even lift her head: "Art exhibition."
Gu Fanglin nodded, ate a mouthful of rice, and could not help but ask again: "The art exhibition hasn't ended yet?"
Yang Bing put down her chopsticks, wiped her mouth, and glanced at him sideways: "Are you checking up on her?"
Gu Fanglin choked.
After the meal, he paced back and forth in the living room with his hands behind his back, pacing until Yang Bing felt dizzy.
"Can you sit down? You're making my eyes ache with all that swaying." She put down the auction catalog in her hand and rubbed the space between her brows.
Gu Fanglin sat down opposite her, picked up his teacup to take a sip, then put it down again.
"That..."
"Want to ask about your daughter?"
Gu Fanglin glared at her.
Yang Bing couldn't be bothered to look at him and continued flipping through the catalog: "The art exhibition ended long ago. She's perfectly fine, Shen Yanhui is taking care of her, she won't go hungry."
"When did I say she was hungry?"
"Then what are you asking about?"
Gu Fanglin was left speechless.
Yang Bing closed the catalog and sighed.
"Gu Fanglin, if you miss your daughter, just say so. Why are you beating around the bush?"
Gu Fanglin was silent for two seconds, his voice dropping: "I'm just afraid she'll find me annoying."
Seeing him like that, Yang Bing was both annoyed and amused.
She picked up her phone and dialed Gu Yan's number.
"What are you doing?" Gu Fanglin sat up straight.
"Helping you ask."
The call connected.
Without waiting for the person on the other end to speak, Yang Bing shoved the phone into Gu Fanglin's hand: "Your father has something to say to you."
Caught off guard, Gu Fanglin took the phone and glared at Yang Bing. Yang Bing had already picked up her teacup and was leisurely drinking tea, a hint of a smile at the corner of her mouth as she watched the show.
He took a deep breath, pressed the phone to his ear, and his tone instantly became affectionate:
"Yan-yan, lately—"
"Uncle Gu."
A low male voice came from the other end of the phone.
Gu Fanglin's expression froze for a moment.
"... Shen Yanhui?"
"It's me." The other side paused, "Yan-yan is still sleeping."
Still sleeping?
Gu Fanglin subconsciously glanced at the clock on the wall.
Twelve-oh-five.
Twelve noon, and still sleeping?
Some rather unpleasant guesses flashed through his mind instantly. Young people, sleeping at this hour—what did they do last night?
His face darkened, and his brows knitted into a knot.
"Her stomach isn't good," Gu Fanglin's voice sank, carrying a tone of reproach, "It's uncomfortable if she doesn't eat. I understand you young people, but you can't be so reckless."
He deliberately emphasized the word "reckless."
Shen Yanhui on the other end of the phone was silent for a second: "Uncle, I fed her this morning. Millet porridge with two side dishes; she ate half a bowl and went back to sleep."
Gu Fanglin's words stuck in his throat.
Fed her?
Millet porridge? Side dishes?
He opened his mouth and continued to find other faults: "Even so, she shouldn't sleep until noon. Her schedule needs to be regular."
"She was busy with the final work for the art exhibition last night and didn't sleep until two in the morning," Shen Yanhui said, "I let her rest a bit more."
Gu Fanglin choked again.
Two in the morning, final work.
So it wasn't what he thought?
He felt his old face couldn't quite hold up.
But who was he? He was Gu Fanglin.
He cleared his throat and changed his angle: "That's still nearly ten hours of sleep; people get lethargic if they sleep too much."
"She is indeed tired lately," Shen Yanhui's tone remained unhurried, "She almost fell asleep in the bathtub while bathing last night. I finished drying her hair, and she fell asleep as soon as she lay down."
Gu Fanglin: "..."
Bathing? Drying hair?
He did not want to know these details.
"Uncle, when she wakes up, I will have her call you back."
"... Mm." Gu Fanglin responded, paused, and added, "That... if you have time this weekend, come home for a meal."
"Okay," Shen Yanhui said, "I will bring Yan-yan back."
Gu Fanglin grunted an "mm" and hung up the phone.
He placed his mobile phone on the coffee table and met Yang Bing's half-smiling gaze.
"Finished chatting?"
Gu Fanglin didn't speak; he picked up his teacup and took a large gulp.
Yang Bing looked at him and said slowly, "Worrying for nothing."
Gu Fanglin frowned: "I am not."
"You are."
"I am not!"
Yang Bing couldn't be bothered to argue with him, stood up to straighten her shawl, picked up her handbag, and walked out.
"Where are you going?" Gu Fanglin asked.
"To accompany Xiao Jin to try on her wedding dress."
Gu Fanglin was stunned for a moment: "That brat Gu Chen isn't going with her?"
"He said he has something to do at the company."
Gu Fanglin's brow furrowed.
Something to do? What could be more important than accompanying his wife to try on a wedding dress?
He picked up his phone and began to dial.
"Unacceptable!"
——
After Gu Fanglin chased Gu Chen from the office to the bridal shop, he went to the company himself.
There was a senior management meeting in the afternoon, and he had to attend on Gu Chen's behalf.
Emerging from the elevator and just turning past the front desk, he ran head-on into a group of people.
"Chairman Gu!" The person in the lead's eyes lit up; he walked over quickly and gripped his hand with both of his, "Oh my, Chairman Gu, long time no see! Your complexion is looking better and better!"
Gu Fanglin recognized him; it was President Wu, who had been a business partner for many years in import and export trade, and the two companies had close dealings.
"President Wu." He nodded slightly, a social smile hanging on his face, "What brings you here today?"
"Came to sign a contract, and just happened to run into you. It's fate!"
Gu Fanglin: "You are too kind, President Wu."
President Wu let go of his hand, smiling with great enthusiasm, and leaned in closer to lower his voice: "Chairman Gu, I must offer you my sincere congratulations!"
Gu Fanglin was taken aback: "Congratulations for what?"
President Wu paused, then smiled even more brightly: "Are you still playing coy with me? Your daughter's big happy event has spread throughout the entire circle!"
Gu Fanglin's heart skipped a beat, but he remained composed on the surface: "Oh?"
President Wu patted him on the shoulder and winked: "That person from the Shen Family—with his status and position, how many people in Jingcheng want to climb up to him but can't? And yet, he quietly became your son-in-law! Are you still going to play dumb with me?"
Gu Fanglin's face stiffened for a moment.
President Wu didn't notice and continued: "Speaking of Mr. Shen, I've dealt with him before. I saw him from afar during that project last year. He doesn't say much, but the moment he stands there, everyone has to be on their best behavior. Your daughter is blessed, and you are blessed too!"
Gu Fanglin twitched the corner of his mouth: "Is that so."
"It certainly is!" President Wu gave a thumbs up, "Your move is high! Truly high!"
Gu Fanglin looked at him, his voice flat: "President Wu is certainly well-informed."
President Wu waved his hand, smiling smugly: "At the dinner table yesterday, several presidents were talking about this. If it weren't for the equity changes at Shen Corporation requiring the disclosure of marital status, were you planning to keep us in the dark?"
Gu Fanglin didn't speak.
President Wu clicked his tongue: "Chairman Gu, you are being excessively low-key!"
Gu Fanglin wore a forced smile; equity changes, disclosure of marital status.
Good, very good.
His good Yan-Yan really sent him a grand gift.
Keeping it from him, she went and got her marriage certificate with Shen Yanhui.
The whole world knew.
Only he didn't know.
