Chapter 61: Needs to be Fed by Mrs. Shen

~8 min read 1,420 words

Shen Yanhui kept watch by the bedside all night.

When Chang Su knocked on the door and entered, he was slumped in the sofa, his face showing exhaustion.

"Sir, it has been cleared up—"

Before he could finish, he was interrupted: "Have someone come over to keep watch, we will talk in the study."

He stood up, gently kissed Gu Yan's forehead, and then turned to leave.

In the study, Chang Su handed a tablet to Shen Yanhui, "The three people who robbed the gallery yesterday belong to a local street gang called Black Mamba, mainly active around Victoria Island."

Shen Yanhui's expression was gloomy; he did not say a word.

Chang Su continued: "They were not targeting you and your wife; they just randomly chose high-end locations to commit crimes."

The man finally raised his eyes: "Randomly?"

"Yes, last month they robbed two jewelry stores and a luxury boutique."

Shen Yanhui tapped his fingers on the table; Chang Su knew he was becoming impatient.

"Their boss did not know you were at the gallery that day. After learning the news, he proactively contacted our people this morning, willing to hand over those three subordinates and compensate for all the gallery's losses."

The study was very quiet; one could hear the sound of the waves outside the window.

Shen Yanhui's voice turned cold: "I don't believe in any randomness or coincidence. Keep investigating."

How could anything in this world be coincidental to such a degree?

If they wanted to play little tricks right in front of him, they had better be prepared to pay the price.

Chang Su acknowledged the order.

Shen Yanhui: "Does that gang deal in human trafficking?"

Chang Su was stunned: "... They do some, mainly smuggling and illegal labor."

"Organize the evidence and hand it over anonymously to the immigration bureau and the police. Also, give those three a lesson."

"Understood."

——

Gu Yan frowned as she woke up, feeling sticky and uncomfortable all over.

But her head no longer hurt, her body was no longer burning, and only her throat felt a bit dry.

She propped herself up with her arms, the silk quilt sliding off her shoulders. A Black maid sitting to the side stood up immediately and helped her sit up.

"Ma'am, you're awake!"

Gu Yan was glad she spoke English, so she could understand her, even though she had a distinct local accent.

"Sir gave instructions that as soon as you woke up, I should tell you he is in the study. How are you feeling now?"

Gu Yan cleared her throat: "Much better. What time is it?"

The maid poured her a glass of warm water, "Ten-thirty in the morning."

So she had slept for that long?

Gu Yan drank the water in small sips; the warm water moistened her dry throat, making her feel much more comfortable. As she drank, she listened to the maid chattering away.

"You slept for a long time. Sir kept watch over you all night last night and only left this morning."

"The relationship between you and Sir is truly wonderful. I rarely see a man like Sir here."

"You Chinese men are all very loving to your wives."

"..."

Gu Yan felt a bit awkward; it wasn't as if all Chinese men were like that.

Seeing her put down the water glass, the maid asked again: "Would you like to eat something, Ma'am? The kitchen has made chicken congee."

Gu Yan didn't answer, but instead asked: "Has Sir eaten?"

"Sir only drank coffee this morning before going to the study." She paused and added in a low voice: "Assistant Chang said Sir is in a bad mood today."

Gu Yan pursed her lips.

She remembered last night, in a daze, she seemed to have heard Shen Yanhui's voice when he was angry. Although her memory was blurry, she remembered that tone.

Cold, furious, not like his usual self.

She threw off the quilt and got out of bed.

"Ma'am, please rest a while longer..."

"No need." Gu Yan walked barefoot to the walk-in closet and casually grabbed a piece of clothing to drape over herself, "I'll go see him."

"Then at least put on some shoes..."

But Gu Yan had already walked out of the bedroom.

The hallway was covered with a thick carpet, and her bare feet stepped onto it softly and silently. She crossed the spacious living room and headed toward the study.

The study door was left ajar.

Just as she was about to push the door open, Shen Yanhui's voice came from inside, cold as ice: "My own people were frightened, I will handle it myself."

Gu Yan's hand stopped on the doorknob.

She heard Shen Yanhui continue: "When will the people from the government arrive?"

"In an hour."

A brief silence.

Gu Yan gently pushed the door open.

In the study, Shen Yanhui sat behind a massive mahogany desk, and Chang Su stood in front of the desk.

Both men turned their heads at the sound.

The moment he saw her, the cold hardness on Shen Yanhui's face melted away.

Chang Su very consciously left the space to the two of them.

"Why are you up?" He stood up and walked over.

"I didn't see you when I woke up." The young girl's voice carried the soft, mushy tone of someone who had been ill, along with a hint of grievance.

Shen Yanhui's heart softened, and his hand reached naturally toward her forehead: "I had some things to handle. Are you still running a fever?"

"No more fever."

Gu Yan tilted her head back and reached out, wanting a hug.

Shen Yanhui simply picked her up as if she were a child, and the young girl's legs instinctively wrapped around his waist.

"Did you not sleep all night?" Gu Yan reached out and brushed her fingers across his brow.

"I slept for a while."

Shen Yanhui sat down on the sofa, taking the opportunity to place her on his lap. He looked down and saw her two snow-white feet were bare.

He reached out and held them.

His palms were warm, but her feet were slightly cool.

"Why aren't you wearing shoes?" Shen Yanhui frowned.

"There's a carpet, it's not cold," Gu Yan said dismissively, her feet wiggling in his palm.

Shen Yanhui used a little force to hold them still, rubbing her icy insteps with his thumbs, as if warming her up, or perhaps... carrying a certain indescribable ambiguity.

Gu Yan tried to justify herself: "Feet are naturally on the cooler side, I'm really not cold..."

Shen Yanhui didn't take the bait; his hand slid to her waist and gave it a light squeeze, "If you don't wear shoes next time, I'll punish you."

Gu Yan: "Punish me with what?"

The corners of Shen Yanhui's mouth curled into a dangerous arc: "What do you think?"

Gu Yan's face flushed red, and she pushed him: "... Pervert."

"Only for you." He admitted it candidly, lowered his head, and nuzzled her nose tip, "Now, will you accompany me to eat breakfast?"

"Didn't you say you weren't eating? Didn't you say coffee was enough?" Gu Yan gave a light huff, taking the opportunity to lecture him.

"If you feed me, I'll eat."

Gu Yan glared at him: "Are you a three-year-old? You need someone to feed you?"

"Mm, I need Mrs. Shen to feed me."

Gu Yan was amused by him, "Alright, let's go, Shen Three-Year-Old."

Shen Yanhui carried her to the dining room terrace, ordered a servant to bring slippers, and put them on her himself.

Breakfast was already prepared; the long table was set with light shredded chicken congee, soup dumplings, and a small pot of soup.

Gu Yan now had a psychological shadow regarding soup and didn't dare to take a sip easily. She looked at Shen Yanhui and asked warily: "What kind of soup is this? It doesn't have any strange effects, does it?"

"It does."

"???"

"Your body is weak after the fever; it's for restoring your strength."

Gu Yan didn't believe him and asked the black maid nearby. The woman smiled and explained: "This is a traditional medicinal dish from Nigeria. People who are sick here all drink it; it can restore strength and help you recover from your illness faster."

It really was...

Shen Yanhui looked at her with a half-smile: "Mrs. Shen, where did your thoughts wander off to again?"

Gu Yan picked up a soup dumpling and stuffed it into his mouth, "Shut up!"
