Chapter 62: Your Matters Are More Important
Halfway through breakfast, Chang Su walked over.
"Sir, the Deputy Minister of the Nigerian Ministry of Energy and the Lagos Police Commissioner have arrived and are waiting in the study."
Shen Yanhui set down his chopsticks but did not stand up immediately.
He looked at Gu Yan beside him; the young girl was sipping juice in small mouthfuls, and upon hearing Chang Su's words, she waved her hand.
"Go attend to your business, I'll wait for you here."
Shen Yanhui ruffled her hair, "Finish your breakfast; I'll be checking when I return."
Gu Yan tilted her head to rescue her hairstyle and replied nonchalantly, "Got it, got it, hurry up and go."
Shen Yanhui was not so easily fooled; he pinched her chin, leaving no room for negotiation: "Finish the porridge, and drink the soup too."
"You're so bossy..."
Shen Yanhui: "Be good."
Gu Yan pursed her lips but still replied, "Fine."
She thought to herself, sometimes he was truly so overbearing that there was no way to refute him at all.
Shen Yanhui was finally satisfied, turned, and walked toward the study with Chang Su, asking as they walked: "What is the attitude of those two?"
"Very respectful," Chang Su reported in a low voice. "The one from the Ministry of Energy brought a message from the President, hoping to finalize the third-phase agreement as soon as possible. The Police Commissioner promised to strengthen security in the Ikoyi and Victoria Island areas."
"Conditions?"
"They are willing to make further concessions on tariffs and land policies."
"Not enough."
The two men's voices gradually faded into the distance.
Gu Yan sat on the terrace, watching Shen Yanhui's tall, straight back disappear around the corner of the corridor. The sunlight shone on her face, warm, but it didn't seem that warm after all.
She picked up her spoon again and scooped a spoonful of porridge into her mouth.
The taste was actually quite good, but after two mouthfuls, she couldn't swallow it anymore. Her throat felt tight, and her stomach felt heavy.
Yesterday's scenes surged up uncontrollably again. Shattering glass, pitch-black gun barrels, and the bright red bloodstains on the floor...
She put down her fork and picked up the juice to take a large gulp.
The cold liquid slid down her throat, slightly suppressing that wave of nausea.
Just then, her phone rang with a video call invitation; on the screen jumped Gu Lin's forever sunny face.
Gu Yan took a deep breath, rubbed her cheeks vigorously to adjust her expression, and answered.
Gu Lin's loud voice came through immediately: "My dear Yan-yan, haven't seen you in days, did you miss me?"
Gu Yan: "No."
Gu Lin put on an injured expression, "Sure enough, once you have a man, you forget your brother. I've been missing you so much every day that I haven't been able to eat or sleep, and I've even lost three pounds..."
"Are you sure it's lost three pounds, not gained three pounds?"
"Can't you talk without tearing down your brother's stage?"
Gu Yan lowered her eyes, stirred the porridge in her bowl with her spoon, and replied sullenly: "Yeah, can't talk."
She asked nonchalantly: "Where have you been messing around again?"
Gu Lin showed her the Danube River behind him, "Messing around sounds a bit harsh, I'm in Budapest watching a competition."
He really can run, Gu Yan thought.
Gu Lin originally wanted to crack jokes, but the more he looked at his sister on the screen, the more he felt something was wrong. Her complexion was a bit pale, and her mood was low.
He had, after all, spent ten months in the same womb with her, so he still had that bit of telepathy.
The smile on Gu Lin's face slowly faded; he brought the phone closer and stared at the screen carefully: "Why is your complexion so pale? Are you sick?"
"No." Gu Yan's hand paused.
"Bullshit, we've known each other since we were in Mom's belly, who are you trying to fool?"
"I'm really fine..."
Gu Yan felt a bit helpless; why was this big oaf not being a fool right now?
"Did that guy Shen Yanhui bully you?!"
He even used the word "guy"...
Gu Yan wanted to tease him, so she said: "If he bullied me, what do you plan to do?"
"I'll beat him up! Daring to bully my sister, does he not want to live anymore!"
"Pfft."
Gu Yan was amused, scanned him up and down, and said in a tone of disbelief, "With your small build, Shen Yanhui could knock you down with one punch."
Gu Lin's face flushed red, feeling a bit lacking in confidence, "I'll beat him up with Big Brother; surely the two of us can't lose to him alone?"
Gu Yan shook her head deliberately: "Hard to say, Big Brother might be able to alone, but adding you..."
"Hey, you little girl, you're just bad-mouthing me."
Gu Yan pursed her lips and smiled.
However, after being sidetracked by her second brother, her mood didn't seem as wilted anymore.
Gu Lin returned to the main topic and asked suspiciously again: "Really fine?"
"Really fine!"
"I'm telling you, Yan-yan, if that Shen Yanhui really bullies you, you can't just endure it yourself. No matter how big the Shen Family is, and no matter how capable Shen Yanhui is, he can't make my sister angry. Hear me?"
Gu Yan felt warm inside, "Heard you."
"Otherwise, I'll tell Mom, Dad, and Big Brother," Gu Lin added viciously.
He even resorted to tattling.
Gu Yan scooped a spoonful of porridge and explained: "It's just that I went to an art gallery yesterday and encountered a robbery. The other party had a gun, and I was a bit scared."
There was silence for two seconds on the other end of the video call.
Then came a voice an octave higher: "Robbery? With guns? You call that nothing?"
Before Gu Yan could get a word in, he asked again: "Are you hurt?"
"No, the bodyguards handled it very quickly—"
"What about Shen Yanhui? Doesn't he claim to be surrounded by elite bodyguards? How could he let you run into something like this?"
"It was an accident—"
"Accident my foot!"
Gu Yan was interrupted repeatedly and couldn't finish a single complete sentence.
"You wait there, I'm flying to Lagos right now. Stay in the house and don't go running around, you hear me? Don't go anywhere until I arrive!"
"Gu Lin!"
"Hanging up!"
The video call was cut off cleanly and decisively.
Gu Yan gripped her phone; well, that was great, she'd summoned another one.
She stood up and trotted toward Shen Yanhui's study; she needed to give him a heads-up first. She trotted across the living room and arrived at the study door.
The door was left ajar, and the sound of conversation came from inside.
She stopped at the doorway and peered inside through the crack in the door.
Inside the study, Shen Yanhui sat in the main seat, with two formally dressed officials opposite him. Chang Su stood to one side, quietly taking notes, and the atmosphere looked serious.
Gu Yan thought for a moment and decided it didn't seem appropriate to go in right now; she decided to talk to him later.
Just as she was about to turn and leave, Shen Yanhui suddenly looked up, his gaze landing precisely on the doorway.
Their eyes met through the crack in the door.
Gu Yan's body froze.
Shen Yanhui's expression didn't change; he simply said "Wait a moment" to the officials and stood up to walk toward the door.
"What's wrong?" He pulled her into his arms.
Gu Yan was surprised: "Aren't you discussing business? Is it okay to leave them hanging?"
"It's fine, they are the ones begging for investment from Shen Corporation. If they can't even wait this long, then there's no need to continue the discussion."
He paused, then added: "Your affairs are more important."
Gu Yan didn't know how others would react to those words, but she found them very pleasant to hear, and she felt quite satisfied inside.
"Hmm... I came to find you because I wanted to tell you. Your brother-in-law is currently charging over here, preparing to cause trouble for you, so be prepared."
Shen Yanhui raised an eyebrow.
"Then who are you siding with?"
Gu Yan pretended to think for a moment, then curved her lips into a smile: "Well, of course I'm siding with my own family."
