Chapter 92: For Her, I Am Determined to Win
Night falls, and the street scene under the warm lights looks very cozy.
Gu Yan walked into the private room with her arm linked with Shen Yanhui's; Gu Chen and Su Jin were already seated. In the corner was Gu Lin, looking like a quail, as if to say, "I'm being very good, please don't scold me."
"Brother, sister-in-law." Gu Yan let go of Shen Yanhui, walked over to hug Su Jin first, and then snuggled up to Gu Chen's side.
Gu Chen raised his hand and patted her shoulder lightly: "Sit."
Gu Yan sat down on his right side.
Shen Yanhui pulled out the chair next to her quite naturally, and before sitting down, he gave a slight nod toward Gu Chen: "Mr. Gu, Mrs. Gu."
Gu Chen's gaze lingered on Shen Yanhui's face for two seconds before he spoke: "Mr. Shen."
It was clearly a normal greeting, but Gu Yan inexplicably felt the air was thick with gunpowder.
Forget it, she had better learn from Gu Lin and just be a quail.
The waiter began to pour the wine.
The appetizer was served: white truffle Italian dumplings.
Just as Gu Yan picked up her fork, Shen Yanhui reminded her in a low voice: "The truffle oil might be a bit heavy."
She nodded and carefully took a bite.
Opposite them, Gu Chen set down his wine glass: "Mr. Shen is very detailed in his understanding of Yanyan's tastes."
"It's only right," Shen Yanhui replied, looking up.
"How long have you known each other?"
"Three months."
"Three months." Gu Chen repeated, his fingers tapping lightly on the tabletop. "Long enough to be so meticulous that you even remember the seasonings. Mr. Shen's efficiency is impressive."
Even Gu Lin could hear the sharpness in those words and quietly shrank his neck.
Shen Yanhui looked up and replied calmly: "It's only right."
The atmosphere was subtly tense.
Su Jin kicked Gu Chen under the table, but smiled on the surface: "This shows that Mr. Shen is attentive. Come, try this veal shank; it's been stewed until very flavorful."
Gu Lin immediately chimed in: "Yeah, yeah, it's especially delicious, and this lobster soup, it's especially fresh... Sister-in-law, why don't you try some?"
Su Jin suppressed a laugh and played along: "Is that so? Then I must try it." She turned to Gu Chen, her tone gentle, "You should try some too, to warm your stomach."
Gu Chen glanced at his wife, his expression softening slightly, and he picked up his spoon.
Gu Yan quietly breathed a sigh of relief and lightly kicked the leg of Gu Lin's chair under the table to show her gratitude.
Gu Lin secretly gave her an "OK" gesture.
The main courses were served one after another.
Gu Lin was probably eager to make up for his mistakes, as he was exceptionally talkative: "Brother, you don't know how awesome the technology of Mr. Shen's racing team is! I went to the P-room this afternoon to take a look, and that simulator—"
"Weren't you supposed to be reflecting at the hotel this afternoon?" Gu Chen interrupted him, his tone flat.
Gu Lin choked, then immediately turned to Shen Yanhui: "Brother-in-law... no, Mr. Shen, you said it was you who told me to go to the P-room to learn, right?"
Shen Yanhui was cutting the cod on his plate and didn't even look up: "Mm."
Gu Lin immediately straightened his back: "I went to learn! For the sake of the future... uh, for the family business!"
Su Jin finally couldn't help but laugh out loud, and she kicked Gu Chen under the table again.
Gu Chen glanced at his younger brother and didn't pursue the matter further.
The atmosphere finally became a bit more lively.
Shen Yanhui still didn't say much, but his actions in taking care of Gu Yan were very natural.
He pushed the plates she couldn't reach closer to her, reminded her in a low voice about things she didn't like in certain dishes, and signaled the waiter to add sparkling water instead of wine when her glass was nearly empty.
The others saw all of this, their expressions varying.
Gu Yan was fed until she was somewhat full; she glared at Shen Yanhui with feigned resentment and leaned into his ear to whisper: "You're feeding a pig again."
"You're too thin; it's uncomfortable to hold."
"You're the one who's uncomfortable to hold!"
Shen Yanhui grabbed her hand and played with it in his palm: "Do you want to drink some more soup?"
The two were intimate as if no one else were around; Gu Lin was used to it, Su Jin found it curious, and only Gu Chen's expression was not very good.
He gave his fiancée a look, and Su Jin, feeling helpless, had to speak up: "Yanyan, will you accompany me to the restroom?"
Gu Yan naturally agreed.
Once the two left, the private room fell silent at once, and Gu Lin shrank into his chair, trying hard to minimize his presence.
It wouldn't be good if the two big shots' battle caused collateral damage.
Gu Chen looked up and spoke calmly: "I heard there have been major changes in the Shen Corporation's equity recently."
Shen Yanhui didn't stop cutting his steak: "Normal adjustments."
"Adjustments?" Gu Chen raised an eyebrow slightly. "Old Master Shen is looking for a marriage partner to consolidate equity; is that also a normal adjustment?"
Shen Yanhui put down his knife and fork and looked up at Gu Chen: "Mr. Gu is very well-informed."
"Since it concerns my sister, I naturally have to be more informed." Gu Chen's tone cooled. "I don't care about the Shen Family's internal strife. But if someone wants to drag Yanyan into it..."
He paused, his voice dropping a few degrees.
"I will not agree."
"Mr. Gu is overthinking it. The Shen Family's affairs are problems I need to handle; they won't implicate Yanyan."
Gu Chen, however, disagreed: "A statement that it won't implicate her has no credibility. You surely know better than I do what kind of methods Old Master Shen uses."
Shen Yanhui was silent for a few seconds, then suddenly smiled.
"Mr. Gu, the Old Master indeed won't agree." He paused, then said every word clearly, "So I have no intention of letting him agree."
Gu Chen's eyes narrowed.
Shen Yanhui raised his wine glass and swirled it gently: "In three months, the largest shareholder of the Shen Group will no longer be the Shen Family, but a company under my name."
There was silence in the private room.
Even Gu Lin widened his eyes.
Shen Yanhui: "So, whether the old man agrees or not, what does it matter?"
The power of discourse had always been in his hands.
Gu Chen stared at him, saying nothing more.
"Mr. Gu, I understand your concerns. As an older brother, it is only natural for you to protect Gu Yan. However..." He paused slightly, "As for her, I am determined to have her."
——
When Gu Yan and Su Jin returned, they were surprised to find the atmosphere in the private room very harmonious; Gu Chen and Shen Yanhui seemed to be chatting quite happily.
The two of them exchanged a glance, both feeling puzzled.
Under the table, Gu Yan hooked her finger around Shen Yanhui's, but was instead seized by him, unable to pull it back.
She scratched his palm in annoyance, and seeing him look over, she asked in a low voice: "What happened? Why is my eldest brother suddenly not angry anymore?"
Shen Yanhui leaned in slightly: "Don't you trust your husband?"
Gu Yan's ears turned red, and she pushed him away.
After the dessert was finished, Gu Chen checked the time and said to Gu Yan: "You will stay in our suite tonight."
Gu Yan nodded obediently: "Alright, eldest brother."
As for Shen Yanhui, she gave him an apologetic look; he would just have to suffer a grievance and spend the night alone.
Gu Chen's suite was also on the top floor, right next door to Shen Yanhui's room.
As soon as they entered, Gu Lin slipped back into his room.
Su Jin pulled Gu Yan to sit down in the living room and poured her a cup of hot tea.
"Were you scared?" Su Jin asked softly.
Gu Yan held the teacup, shook her head, and then nodded.
Su Jin smiled and stroked her hair: "Your eldest brother is just too nervous about you. However..."
She paused, her tone gentle: "That Mr. Shen really made me look at him in a new light."
Gu Yan felt a bit embarrassed and lowered her head to drink her tea.
It looked like the first hurdle had been cleared, but a bigger bombshell was still ahead. She had to think of a way to prepare her family in advance.
In that case, her sister-in-law Su Jin was a very good entry point.
After hesitating for a long while, Gu Yan decided to speak up: "Sister-in-law, I... there is something I haven't told the family."
Su Jin looked at her: "Hmm?"
Gu Yan bit her lip, her voice even quieter: "That... actually, Shen Yanhui and I... have already registered our marriage."
"Clatter."
The lid of the teacup in Su Jin's hand landed gently on the saucer.
