Chapter 93: Could It Be a Shotgun Wedding?

~8 min read 1,516 words

Su Jin looked at Gu Yan, stunned for a full five or six seconds.

"When did this happen?"

"Last month." Gu Yan's voice grew quieter as she spoke.

Su Jin took a deep breath, then slowly exhaled.

"Does Gu Lin know?"

"He doesn't! I didn't dare tell anyone... Sister-in-law, you are the first to know." Gu Yan shook her head immediately; she absolutely could not sell Gu Lin out.

Su Jin looked at her nervous yet expectant eyes; her heart softened, but she also felt a headache coming on.

"You..." She reached out and tapped Gu Yan on the forehead, "To think you dared to hide such a big thing."

Gu Yan nudged over and hugged Su Jin's arm, acting like a spoiled child: "I was wrong... but at the time, I was just... just a bit impulsive."

Su Jin sighed and stroked her hair.

"Then when do you plan to tell the family?" she asked, "Especially your eldest brother."

Gu Yan shrank her neck: "... Find a suitable time?"

Su Jin laughed in spite of herself: "Given your eldest brother's attitude today, what time do you think is suitable?"

Gu Yan looked at her pitifully: "So, Sister-in-law... when the time comes, you have to help me... put in a good word in front of Eldest Brother."

Su Jin looked at her like this, feeling both annoyed and amused.

"Know to be afraid now?" She pinched Gu Yan's cheek, "When you secretly registered your marriage, wasn't your courage quite big?"

Su Jin felt overwhelmed, calculating in her heart how to minimize Gu Chen's anger once he found out about this.

Sigh.

This girl really doesn't let anyone rest easy.

But what can be done? Still have to spoil her.

Seeing that Su Jin seemed to have relented, a weight lifted from Gu Yan's heart, and she was just about to lean in to act spoiled again.

A sudden surge rose in her stomach.

She covered her mouth and dry-heaved once.

Su Jin's body stiffened, and she turned her head abruptly.

Gu Yan hurriedly drank some water to suppress it, and as soon as she looked up, she met her sister-in-law's look of facing a formidable enemy.

"..."

This expression, this look—she definitely misunderstood.

"Sister-in-law! It's absolutely not what you think! I didn't..."

Before she could finish, the suite door was pushed open.

Gu Chen walked in from outside; he had heard the second half of the sentence, his gaze scrutinizing as it landed on this troublesome younger sister: "Didn't what?"

Gu Yan opened her mouth.

Saying it was wrong, and not saying it was also wrong.

Su Jin glanced at her, sighed in her heart, and took over the conversation: "Nothing, Yan Yan said she wasn't overstuffed."

Gu Yan nodded hurriedly: "Yes, yes, yes, I'm not overstuffed; I could even have another piece of tiramisu without a problem."

But her stomach disagreed, even voicing a protest.

A wave of nausea surged up again, and she couldn't help but dry-heave once more.

Gu Chen's brow furrowed, his eyes filled with worry: "Not feeling well?"

Su Jin's heart jumped to her throat.

Gu Yan got over that wave and waved her hand: "It's nothing, I really am just a bit stuffed... that tiramisu was a bit cloying."

As she spoke, she picked up her water glass and took a big gulp to suppress the discomfort in her throat.

Gu Chen didn't speak; he simply walked in front of her, raised his hand, and placed the back of it very lightly against her forehead.

The temperature was normal.

Yet his brow did not smooth out, his gaze scanning her face carefully: "Is your stomach uncomfortable? Or did you catch a cold?"

Gu Yan said: "Maybe I just ate too fast and had some cold table wine."

Gu Chen looked at her for a few seconds: "You need to take care of your own body; if your stomach isn't good, don't be greedy."

She naturally nodded obediently.

Gu Chen didn't press further, turning to say to Su Jin: "Have someone send up some honey water." He then looked at Gu Yan, "Drink it and rest early; if you're still not feeling well tomorrow, call a doctor to take a look."

"Got it," Gu Yan replied, drawing out the sound.

The honey water was delivered, and after drinking two sips, she finally felt a bit more comfortable. However, she really couldn't be greedy anymore in the future, she said to herself.

Gu Chen sat down beside Su Jin and put his arm around her waist very naturally, though his gaze remained on Gu Yan.

He asked: "How is the art exhibition preparation going lately?"

"Quite well," Gu Yan still answered obediently, "The exhibition hall has already finalized the schedule, and Lin Wei is following up on the details."

"If you're short on money, tell me; the family isn't lacking that bit of money for you to hold an exhibition, no need to spend other people's."

Who this "other person" referred to went without saying.

Gu Yan found it funny in her heart, but she answered sweetly: "Got it, Eldest Brother loves me the most. But I can earn money myself now; the auction market for my paintings has been really good lately."

A trace of a smile flashed in Gu Chen's eyes.

"Mm, our Gu Family's great painter has made something of herself." His tone carried the indulgence unique to an older brother.

Gu Yan struck while the iron was hot, leaning over to his side and hooking his arm: "So I'm planning to paint a masterpiece for my future little nephew or niece to hang in the nursery; I guarantee it will be one of a kind in the whole world~"

Her eyes were bright, looking like she was waiting for praise.

Beside her, the teacup in Su Jin's hand shook slightly.

She glanced at the little girl's flat lower abdomen, her expression somewhat complex.

Gu Chen did not notice his wife's abnormality and finally let out a very soft laugh.

"Fine, I'll wait for you to draw it."

Gu Yan: "Then Big Brother isn't angry with me anymore, right?"

"When was I ever angry with you?" Gu Chen countered.

Gu Yan accused: "Just now while we were eating, you were so fierce..."

"That was for your own good." Gu Chen paused, his tone softening, "That man Shen Yanhui is not simple; I have to help you see him clearly."

"Then did you see him clearly?" Gu Yan asked in a low voice.

Gu Chen was silent for a few seconds.

"Go get some rest, it's getting late."

Gu Yan: "..."

So, there was actually someone even her big brother couldn't see through.

"Then you two get some rest early as well." She still stood up and returned to her room.

The living room suddenly went quiet; Su Jin was still somewhat dazed, and the more she thought about it, the more wrong it felt.

Gu Yan and Shen Yanhui, they wouldn't be having a shotgun wedding, would they?

"A-Jin?"

"..."

Seeing her distracted, Gu Chen pulled her directly onto his lap.

Su Jin turned back instantly, let out a low cry, and subconsciously wrapped her arms around his neck: "What are you doing? Gu Lin and Yan Yan are still here!"

"They wouldn't dare come out." Gu Chen pulled her completely into his embrace.

Su Jin's cheeks warmed slightly, and she slapped his chest in annoyance.

Gu Chen ignored this painless protest and looked down at her: "What were you thinking about just now? You couldn't even hear me calling you."

Su Jin leaned into his arms and hesitated for a moment.

She couldn't say it directly.

She knew him too well; whether it was getting a marriage certificate or being pregnant, both were bombs that could instantly blow his reason away.

"I was thinking that, actually, that Shen Yanhui and Yan Yan are quite a good match... both of them are so good-looking, the baby they have will definitely be very pretty..." Su Jin probed carefully.

However, before she could finish, Gu Chen's brow had already furrowed into a "chuan" shape.

"Nothing is set in stone yet; it's too early to talk about these things."

As expected.

Su Jin probed again: "You wouldn't really want to break up a pair of lovebirds, would you?"

Gu Chen laughed in spite of himself: "What are you thinking about?"

Su Jin felt slightly relieved; it was good that he wasn't thinking of breaking them up, otherwise, if the child were born, it would be a single-parent family—a disastrous start.

"She has grown up and has her own choices. What I can do is vet them for her and clear away the obstacles on the surface." His voice lowered, "But some paths, she has to walk herself. And some stumbles, she has to take herself."

These words were rational, but Su Jin still heard the touch of helpless softness deep within his tone.

But then again, their Gu Family daughter, raised with a thousand pamperings, had the foundation to afford trial and error.
