Chapter 94: Shen Yanhui, I'm feeling a bit unwell
In the room, Gu Yan had not been able to fall asleep.
Her stomach first felt a dull ache; she drank some hot water, but the situation did not seem to improve. By the late hours of the night, the pain became increasingly sharp.
She curled up on the bed, as if a hand were gripping and twisting her stomach, and cold sweat seeped out on her forehead.
At this hour, her elder brother and sister-in-law must have already fallen asleep, and she did not want to wake them.
But... it really hurt so much.
She fumbled to grab her phone, and the cold light of the screen lit up, illuminating her face, which was as pale as paper.
Without hesitating for more than a few seconds, she tapped on Shen Yanhui's chat box, her fingertips trembling as she typed.
【Shen Yanhui, are you asleep?】
There was no reply from the other side, and she felt a bit discouraged. Yet, unexpectedly, the next second, the screen lit up; it was a call from Shen Yanhui.
Gu Yan swiped to answer, and before she could speak, she heard his deep voice tinged with sleepiness: "Why are you still awake so late?"
At just that one sound, all the discomfort mixed with grievances surged up instantly.
Her nose felt sore, and she said in a small voice with a sobbing tone: "Shen Yanhui... I'm not feeling well..."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line.
Immediately following was the rustling sound of him rising quickly, his tone turning grave: "Open the door."
Gu Yan endured the pain, wrapped herself in a thin blanket, and trotted to the door.
Pulling the door open, in the warm yellow light of the hallway, Shen Yanhui stood there wearing pajamas. His hair was slightly messy, clearly having gotten up from bed in a hurry.
Her eyes turned red, and clutching her abdomen, she threw herself into his arms.
Tears fell silently, quickly soaking a small patch of the pajama fabric on his chest. Her body was trembling slightly due to the pain.
Shen Yanhui's heart sank.
He held her tightly with one arm, while his other hand felt the temperature of her forehead.
It was cold, covered in cold sweat.
"Don't be afraid," he said in a low voice, bending down to scoop her up horizontally.
Gu Yan buried her face in the crook of his neck, unable to suppress her faint sobs.
It had hurt when she didn't see him, but it felt like something she could still endure. Yet, the moment she saw him, she felt as if the pain were completely unbearable; it hurt so much that she felt aggrieved, hurt so much that her tears flowed continuously.
Shen Yanhui carried her back to the room, let her sit sideways on his lap, and circled her in his arms.
"Where does it hurt?" he asked, his voice kept very low, restraining his emotions.
Gu Yan was freezing all over, subconsciously pressing against his warm chest. Beneath the thin blanket, she wore only a silk camisole nightdress, her soft body curves snuggling against him without any barrier.
But Shen Yanhui had no mind to notice these things at this moment.
"Stomach hurts..." she said, sobbing, her fingers clutching tightly at the fabric of his pajamas, "It hurts so much... and I want to vomit..."
As soon as she finished speaking, she struggled violently from his arms and rushed toward the bathroom, covering her mouth.
Shen Yanhui followed immediately.
Gu Yan lay by the toilet, vomiting miserably.
The little bit of food she had eaten at night had long since been digested; what she vomited was all sour liquid, burning her throat with pain.
She leaned exhaustedly against the cold floor tiles, her long hair sticking to her sweat-dampened cheeks, looking disheveled and pitiful.
Shen Yanhui squatted down, one hand gathering her long hair and gently brushing it back, while the other hand stroked her back.
His expression, under the cold white light of the bathroom, was terrifyingly grim.
Once she finished vomiting, he took a wet towel, carefully wiped her face and the corners of her mouth clean, then scooped her up and placed her back on the bedroom bed, wrapping her well with the quilt.
"Lie still," his voice was also very deep.
Gu Yan curled up, still trembling slightly.
Shen Yanhui walked to the window, dialed a number, and said in an icy tone: "Call the doctor over."
Hanging up the phone, he immediately returned to the bedside.
Gu Yan looked at him with wet, watery eyes, tears rolling down silently again, her voice hoarse and spoiled: "Shen Yanhui... it hurts..."
His heart felt as if it had been fiercely twisted by something.
He sat down on the edge of the bed, pulled her—blanket and all—into his arms, and with his palm pressing gently through the quilt against her cramping stomach, he rubbed it slowly and firmly.
"The doctor will be here soon," he lowered his head and kissed her sweat-dampened forehead, "Endure it for a moment, hmm?"
Gu Yan sobbed and burrowed into his arms, her fingers gripping his arm tightly, her nails almost digging in.
Shen Yanhui let her grip him, while his other hand took one of his clean shirts from the wardrobe nearby and found a small storage bag she had brought.
Inside were her undergarments.
"Lift your arms," he said in a low voice.
Gu Yan looked at him blankly, but still obediently stretched her arms out from the quilt.
Shen Yanhui's movements were very light; he first helped her put on her undergarments and fastened them, then slipped on his shirt.
The oversized shirt wrapped around her entire body, carrying the cold, crisp scent of him.
His hand returned to her stomach, continuing to rub with moderate pressure. The warmth transmitted through the fabric, and the cramping pain seemed to have truly eased a little.
Gu Yan pressed her face against his chest and whimpered softly: "Don't leave..."
"I won't leave," he replied quickly.
When the doorbell rang, Gu Yan's body stiffened.
Shen Yanhui did not let go of her; he only wrapped the quilt more tightly around her, still holding her in his arms, before saying in a deep voice: "Enter."
Chang Su walked in quickly with a middle-aged doctor carrying a medical kit.
The doctor had European features but was clearly accustomed to this scene, nodding slightly: "Mr. Shen."
"She has severe stomach pain, accompanied by vomiting," Shen Yanhui said concisely.
The doctor nodded, set down the case, and took a few steps forward, looking with a gentle gaze at the person in Shen Yanhui's arms whose pale side profile was only partially visible: "Miss, I need to perform an examination for you, is that alright?"
Gu Yan did not move, only burying her face deeper into the crook of Shen Yanhui's neck.
Shen Yanhui lowered his head and coaxed her softly in her ear: "Let the doctor take a look, I'm holding you, hmm?"
Only then did she nod ever so slightly, though her arms remained tightly wrapped around his neck.
The doctor performed a basic examination professionally and quickly.
"Acute gastritis, complicated by stomach spasms. The trigger may have been a dinner that was too greasy, combined with emotional tension and fatigue. There is no fever, so antibiotics are not needed for the time being."
The doctor paused and continued: "I will now give her some medicine to relieve the spasms and protect the stomach lining, and we will observe. If the pain persists or worsens, we will consider further examinations."
Shen Yanhui nodded: "Administer the medicine."
The doctor quickly prepared the medicine, which consisted of a small cup of transparent liquid and two white tablets.
Shen Yanhui took them and said softly to the person in his arms: "Yanyan, take the medicine, you will feel more comfortable."
Gu Yan lifted her head from his neck, looking at the cup of medicine with wet eyes; she didn't speak, but obediently opened her mouth.
Once the doctor and Chang Su left, the room became quiet again, with only the girl's faint gasps remaining.
Shen Yanhui adjusted his posture to let her lie more comfortably in his arms, his palm remaining over her stomach, rubbing in gentle circles.
"Feeling any better?" he asked.
Gu Yan spoke with a heavy nasal tone; her tears had stopped, but the rims of her eyes and the tip of her nose were still red: "It still hurts..."
"The medicine doesn't work that fast." He lowered his head and rubbed his chin against the top of her hair: "Sleep for a while; once you're asleep, it won't hurt anymore."
She gave a low "mm."
It is unknown how much time passed before the girl's breathing finally became steady and long.
Shen Yanhui glanced at his phone; it was already three in the morning.
He sighed.
This little girl was sent by the heavens to tame him.
Yet, he was perfectly willing.
