Chapter 28: Make Her Pay

~6 min read 1,186 words

When they arrived at the private room, Lin Wu and Feng Jingxin were already there.

Lin Wu asked, “What’s so funny?”

Qi Yuming smiled: “Nothing, just ran into someone interesting.”

After dinner, Feng Tingshen and Feng Jingxin returned home.

Getting out of the car, Feng Jingxin ran happily upstairs: “Mama, Mama~”

Liu Shen heard the noise and came out of the kitchen: “The Lady hasn’t come back yet.”

“Ah?” Feng Jingxin looked disappointed: “Why has Mama been so busy lately?”

Grumbling, she went upstairs.

Seeing Feng Tingshen standing still, Liu Shen asked, “Mr.?”

Feng Tingshen shook his head: “Nothing.”

Then he also went upstairs.

That night, Feng Tingshen discovered that Rong Ci had not returned.

The next morning, Feng Jingxin woke up, expecting to eat breakfast prepared by Rong Ci.

Seeing the breakfast on the table that didn’t look like Rong Ci’s cooking, she frowned: “Didn’t Mama get up to make breakfast?”

“The Lady isn’t home.”

Feng Jingxin found it strange: “Where did Mama go? Did she go back to her maternal grandmother’s house again?”

“Probably.”

Rong Ci hadn’t said anything, so Liu Shen dared not guarantee.

Feng Jingxin looked at Feng Tingshen: “Dad…”

Feng Tingshen spoke slowly: “If you want to know, call and ask yourself.”

“Then I’ll ask tonight.”

……

Meanwhile.

After eating breakfast, Rong Ci went to the company.

When Yu Moxun was about to discuss new product development with Rong Ci, his phone rang.

The caller asked: “Has your company recently offended the Feng family?”

“What?”

Hearing this, Yu Moxun paused, glanced at Rong Ci, and turned on speakerphone.

“Someone from the Feng family wants to cause trouble for your company, but we’ve stopped them.”

Hearing this, Rong Ci froze, her fingers clenching into a fist.

After that dinner, Feng Tingshen had never confronted her about her mistreatment of Lin Wu—she’d assumed he didn’t care to pursue it.

But he wasn’t ignoring it—he simply found her unworthy of words; he was showing her through action that since she harmed Lin Wu, he would make her pay.

Yu Moxun now understood what had happened.

He patted Rong Ci’s hand: “Don’t worry—our company has close ties with the government; they can’t touch us.”

“Mm.”

Thank goodness for that.

Otherwise…

To avenge Lin Wu, with Feng Tingshen’s power and wealth, Changmo might not be destroyed outright, but it would certainly be crippled.

He really does protect Lin Wu tightly.

Yu Moxun felt uneasy and asked: “Now that they can’t touch Changmo, will they target the Rong family?”

Rong Ci shook her head: “No.”

With the old madam alive, Feng Tingshen won’t easily move against the Rong family.

Feng Tingshen still owes the old madam face.

“That’s good…”

Near the end of the workday, Rong Ci received a call from Feng Jingxin: “Mama, when will you come home? I’m hungry.”

“Didn’t Liu Shen make you something to eat?”

“But I want your sweet and sour pork ribs.” Last time she ordered dishes, she didn’t get to eat any—now she wanted them even more.

Rong Ci didn’t want to go.

She rubbed her temples, and before she could speak, Feng Jingxin added: “Dad’s on a business trip—I’m so bored, Mama, please come home soon.”

Feng Tingshen was on a business trip?

Rong Ci paused.

She and Feng Tingshen were nearly divorced—he was no longer her concern.

But Feng Jingxin—until she turned eighteen, Rong Ci still had a duty to care for her.

Thinking of this, she said: “Understood. I’ll be back soon.”

That night, Rong Ci made sweet and sour pork ribs and boiled soup for Feng Jingxin.

For the next two days, she stayed there.

On Friday, Rong Lao Nai called and asked her to come home for dinner.

Rong Ci brought Feng Jingxin back to the Rong household.

Only the old madam was home; everyone else had engagements or was still in school.

Rong Lao Nai didn’t know Feng Jingxin had returned to the country—seeing Rong Ci bring her along, she was delighted.

Feng Jingxin was close to Rong Lao Nai and easily made her very happy.

That night, Rong Ci and Feng Jingxin stayed at the Rong household.

The next morning, Rong Ci woke up and rolled out dough to make dumplings.

Watching Rong Ci’s skilled movements, the old madam remembered how, before her marriage, Rong Ci had never done a single household chore, and couldn’t help sighing.

Rong Ci knew what the old madam was thinking; she smiled: “Cooking calms the mind—I enjoy it.”

Rong Ci’s face had filled out slightly since her last visit; she wasn’t so thin anymore, and the old madam felt somewhat reassured.

After making the dumplings and chatting with the old madam, Rong Ci went upstairs.

Feng Jingxin was already awake and washing up.

Rong Ci was gathering Feng Jingxin’s changed pajamas, about to stand, when she saw Feng Jingxin’s tablet light up—a message from Lin Wu.

“Has Xinxin woken up? Auntie’s coming back this afternoon. Let’s have dinner together tonight. Tomorrow, Auntie will take you out, okay?”

Rong Ci glanced at it, then looked away, placing Feng Jingxin’s pajamas into the washing machine.

When she returned, Feng Jingxin was holding the tablet, hiding it behind her when she saw Rong Ci, trying to prevent her from seeing the chat with Lin Wu.

Rong Ci didn’t call her out; she said: “The dumplings are ready. Come downstairs for breakfast.”

Feng Jingxin jumped off the bed happily: “I haven’t had dumplings cooked by Mama in so long—yay!”

Over breakfast, Rong Lao Nai asked cheerfully: “What would Xinxin like for dinner tonight? Grandma will have it prepared for you.”

Feng Jingxin knew Rong Lao Nai disliked Lin Wu.

Hearing this, she rolled her dark eyes, then whispered: “Grandma, Dad’s coming home tonight—I want to go back home for dinner…”

Rong Lao Nai was reluctant—she hadn’t seen Feng Jingxin in a long time.

But over the past two years, Feng Jingxin had grown very attached to Feng Tingshen; hearing this, she didn’t suspect anything.

Rong Ci knew Feng Jingxin was lying, but pretended not to, and picked up a dish for the old madam: “It’s fine—I’ll stay with you.”

A wife staying at her natal home while her husband returns from a business trip seemed unreasonable.

But Feng Tingshen had treated Rong Ci poorly, and Rong Lao Nai had always hoped Rong Ci would distance herself from him—if she wanted a divorce, Rong Lao Nai would wholeheartedly agree.

So hearing this, Rong Lao Nai smiled: “Good, our little Ci is such a good girl.”

Feng Jingxin had been worried about how to make an excuse to ditch Rong Ci and meet Lin Wu that night—now, hearing Rong Ci say this, she instantly relaxed.

When Feng Jingxin left, the old madam packed her with a pile of her favorite foods.

But Rong Ci pushed them back, telling her to leave them for her uncle’s children.

When Feng Jingxin left, Rong Ci contacted Feng Tingshen’s butler and had someone come to pick her up—she didn’t see her off herself.

The old madam noticed, finding it odd, but didn’t think too deeply about it.
