Chapter 31: Could the Lady Be Having an Affair?

~6 min read 1,149 words

Feng Tingshen’s company has many affairs and he’s always busy.

Over the next two days, Feng Tingshen was away on business and Feng Jingxin was extremely bored at home alone, so she couldn’t help calling Rong Ci again.

After two days of busyness, that incident had already passed for Rong Ci.

Seeing Feng Jingxin’s call, she answered.

Feng Jingxin: “Mom, when are you coming home…?”

Learning that Feng Tingshen wasn’t home, Rong Ci returned after work that evening.

After Rong Ci came back, Feng Jingxin was overjoyed, chattering nonstop about school anecdotes and telling her about the new game she’d become obsessed with, insisting on teaching Rong Ci how to play.

After finishing her homework, whenever Feng Jingxin wanted to play or became interested in something—as long as it wasn’t harmful to her health—Rong Ci usually joined her.

After watching Feng Jingxin play twice, Rong Ci teamed up with her and played the game for over an hour.

Feng Jingxin was extremely happy that night.

She even insisted Rong Ci sleep with her.

Rong Ci, who had no desire to sleep in the master bedroom, agreed.

On Thursday evening, Rong Ci turned off the range hood, carrying a dish as she stepped out of the kitchen, when she heard Feng Jingxin’s voice outside: “Dad, you’re back!”

Then came a deep, pleasant male voice.

“Hmm, have you eaten yet?”

“Not yet, but Mom’s almost done.”

“Really?”

Rong Ci paused, then carried the dish out of the kitchen.

At that moment, Feng Jingxin and Feng Tingshen walked in from the living room.

“Mom, Dad’s back.”

Rong Ci glanced at Feng Tingshen, then looked away: “Mm.”

Rong Ci took off her apron and handed it to the butler beside her; the three of them sat in their usual seats.

Feng Jingxin ate the food Rong Ci had served her and asked: “Dad, weren’t you supposed to come back tomorrow?”

“I finished early and came back sooner.”

“Oh…”

The Feng family had few table manners; Feng Jingxin spoke freely, and though Feng Tingshen spoke little, he generally responded to everything she said.

Feng Jingxin chattered happily, then turned to Rong Ci: “Mom, why aren’t you saying anything?”

Rong Ci replied softly: “I’m happy just listening to you.”

“Oh…”

In fact, the butler had also noticed something off about Rong Ci.

Previously, Rong Ci had avoided speaking much to Feng Tingshen out of concern he’d find it annoying—but every time he returned from a trip, she always offered proper greetings and care.

Today, Rong Ci hadn’t initiated any conversation with Feng Tingshen, and it seemed she hadn’t even looked directly at him…

Feng Tingshen appeared not to notice Rong Ci’s odd behavior; his expression remained unchanged.

At that moment, Feng Tingshen’s phone rang.

It was Feng’s grandmother.

“Off on another business trip?”

“I just got back.” Feng Tingshen hung up, turned on speakerphone, and continued eating as he spoke: “What does the little old lady want?”

Feng’s grandmother snorted with amusement: “It’s been half a month since I last saw Xiao Ci and Xin Xin. The weather’s turned cold—tomorrow, take Xiao Ci and Xin Xin to the Hot Spring Shanzhuang. Let’s soak together and warm up.”

“Understood.”

After hanging up, Feng Jingxin was thrilled: “We’re going to soak in hot springs again—awesome!”

Feng Tingshen looked at Rong Ci and said: “I’ll send someone to pick you up tomorrow night.”

Rong Ci didn’t look up: “I’ll drive myself from the company.”

“No, Mom, come back and go with me? The Hot Spring Shanzhuang is so far—I’d be so bored riding alone.”

Rong Ci hesitated.

Whatever.

“...Fine.”

Chang Mo had recently been developing a new app; after dinner, Yu Moxun called to discuss technical issues with her.

Feng Tingshen and Feng Jingxin were talking in the living room; Rong Ci stepped outside to take the call.

Half an hour later, Rong Ci finished the call.

Feng Jingxin looked up at her and couldn’t help saying: “Mom, you’ve been getting so many calls lately—every night you talk for ages. You never used to be like this…”

Hearing this, Feng Tingshen looked up at her.

Only then did the butler realize it was true.

After all, Rong Ci had rarely talked on the phone before.

Not to mention talking this long every night.

Could the Lady be having an affair?

This…

Surely not?

Given the Lady’s feelings for Feng Tingshen, it shouldn’t be possible.

“Just some matters.” Rong Ci didn’t elaborate: “I’m going upstairs to handle something.”

Feng Jingxin: “Oh…”

Rong Ci turned on her computer and began processing the file package Yu Moxun had sent.

Feng Jingxin returned to her room; seeing how busy she was, she didn’t disturb her, played by herself, took a bath, then came back to peek.

In fact, over the past few years, Rong Ci hadn’t completely abandoned her own field.

Occasionally, in her spare time, she designed a few programs, and when Feng Jingxin came over, she’d explain some basic concepts.

But back then, Feng Jingxin was only three or four, and often fell asleep halfway through.

Now that Feng Jingxin was watching, Rong Ci didn’t stop her—she just kept working.

Feng Jingxin naturally didn’t understand, but suddenly realized: this kind of work seemed familiar—Wu Auntie had done something similar…

Feng Jingxin watched for a while, then soon went to bed.

Rong Ci didn’t shut down her computer until she finished.

At that point, she checked the time—it was past two in the morning.

She hadn’t returned to the master bedroom, and Feng Tingshen had shown no reaction at all; perhaps, her staying in Feng Jingxin’s room and minimizing contact with him was exactly what he wanted.

The next day, Rong Ci didn’t get up to make breakfast.

Feng Jingxin only realized the night before that Rong Ci had slept with her, when she woke up and saw her beside her.

Seeing Rong Ci still asleep, Feng Jingxin got up quietly and left the room.

Seeing Feng Tingshen, she yawned: “Dad, good morning.”

Feng Tingshen: “Mm.”

“Mom hasn’t woken up yet.”

“Mm.”

When Rong Ci got up for breakfast, Feng Tingshen was nearly finished.

They exchanged no words; Feng Tingshen finished and left.

Rong Ci went to the company at her usual time.

That evening, she left on time.

When she arrived home, Feng Jingxin was already waiting in the car.

But Feng Tingshen hadn’t returned.

Rong Ci and Feng Jingxin waited over twenty minutes; Feng Jingxin frowned: “Dad’s so slow.”

Rong Ci calmly read her book, unbothered.

At that moment, the living room phone rang.

A few seconds later, the butler said: “The Master says he’s occupied and can’t return yet—he asks the Lady and Miss Xin Xin to go ahead to the Hot Spring Shanzhuang; he’ll join later.”

Rong Ci didn’t mind: “Understood.”

Feng Tingshen said he’d come later, but that night, he never appeared—even deep into the night.
