Chapter 1216: The World-Swallower
Upon landing, Jaghatai's Power Scimitar had already severed the heads of two Fengqi soldiers.
Turning and sweeping, the chest of a third soldier was sliced open.
Following through with a forward charge, the throat of a fourth soldier was pierced.
In an instant.
Four soldiers, all eliminated.
Behind him, the warriors of the White Scars landed one after another.
"The seventh level."
Jaghatai looked at the massive metal door ahead.
"The Rift Generation Chamber."
On the door was a red warning light, flashing frantically.
Jaghatai walked toward that door.
He pressed his palm against the metal.
His psychic perception extended outward.
Behind the door, he could "see" that space.
A spherical room fifty meters in diameter, with a massive ring-shaped device suspended in the center, and in the center of the ring was a Rift that was currently expanding.
The edges of the Rift shimmered with blue-violet light, and within the light, something was writhing, breathing, and staring.
Standing before the Control Console was a Fengqi, Valken.
Behind him were several others: two Fengqi soldiers and an elderly Fengqi wearing a white research coat.
And... and something else.
Jaghatai could not accurately describe what that was.
It was not life, not energy, not anything he had ever seen.
It existed on the other side of the Rift, observing, waiting, and... smiling.
Jaghatai opened his eyes.
"Fall back."
He said.
The White Scars Space Marines retreated rapidly.
Jaghatai raised his Power Scimitar, pouring all his strength into it.
The blade began to emit a psychic Huguang.
He struck down.
The blade cleaved into the metal door, a straight crack extending from the top of the door to the bottom.
Jaghatai lifted his foot and kicked open the door that had been split in two.
Behind the door, blue-violet light rushed toward his face.
The Rift was right there, thirty meters ahead.
It was larger, brighter, and more... alive than described in the intelligence reports.
Jaghatai saw Valken standing before the Control Console.
That Commander-in-Chief of the Fengqi Star Alliance saw him too.
Their gazes met amidst the blue-violet light.
"You have come."
Valken said, his voice calm.
"But it is too late."
Jaghatai's brow furrowed slightly, his gaze fixed on the Rift; something seemed to be emerging from deep within it.
"What have you done?"
Jaghatai asked, his voice low.
Valken laughed maniacally.
"I have opened the door. The door to infinite possibilities. The door to the thing you fear most."
Jaghatai ignored his mad ravings. His psychic perception was warning him frantically; the thing deep within the Rift was awakening, approaching, and staring at this world with countless eyes.
He had to stop it.
Jaghatai raised his left hand, his palm aimed at the Rift. His psychic power began to converge, attempting to seal the Rift that was currently expanding.
But when Jaghatai's psychic power touched the Rift.
A sudden change occurred.
The Rift shuddered violently.
The blue-violet light suddenly surged; Jaghatai's psychic power did not suppress the Rift, but was instead absorbed by it, transformed, and used to... accelerate its expansion.
"What!"
Jaghatai pulled his hand back abruptly, but it was already too late.
Seeing that Jaghatai had actually caused the Rift to expand directly, Valken shouted in shock.
"What have you done?! You gave it power! You fed it!"
Was it not said that the Xiuluo Holy Star Alliance feared the Rift? How could they be magnifying the Rift themselves?
Jaghatai did not answer.
His eyes were fixed on the Rift.
A figure stepped out from the Rift.
That was a Space Marine.
His Power Armor was deep crimson, and the armor was covered in hideous spikes and blasphemous Runes.
That Space Marine's helmet was in the shape of a beast, with sharp metal Liaya at the mouth.
He held a massive Chainaxe in his hand, the blade still dripping with the blood of some creature.
He stepped out of the rift, stood on the floor of the spherical room, and scanned everything around him.
Then he laughed.
The laughter was transmitted through the helmet's loudspeaker.
"Finally. Finally found a new Hunting Ground."
A second Space Marine stepped out of the rift.
A third.
A thirtieth.
Thirty World Eaters Chaos Space Marines surged out from the rift, quickly deploying into combat formation within the spherical room.
Valken widened his eyes, looking at these suddenly appearing beings in disbelief.
"This... what is this? It shouldn't be like this... it shouldn't be..."
Behind his own rift, why were these Space Marines here too? But they looked different.
One World Eaters Chaos Space Marine turned toward him.
"Mongrel."
He raised his Chainaxe.
Valken wanted to run, but the speed at which the Chainaxe swung down was faster.
Blood splattered.
Valken's three eyes remained open until death, the rift that was still expanding reflected in his pupils.
Until he died, he did not understand what it was he had released.
Why did it turn out like this?
Those two Fengqi soldiers also failed to survive the next second. The World Eaters' Bolters roared, and their bodies were torn to shreds.
Veriks slumped on the ground, his three eyes wide, the scene before him exceeding everything he had ever known.
Jaghatai did not move.
He stood on the other side of the spherical room, with thirty White Scars Space Marines lined up behind him.
Thirty against thirty, but the momentum was completely different; the oppressive feeling exuded by those World Eaters far exceeded the level a normal Space Marine should have.
They were twisted.
They were blessed by some kind of existence.
"War Hounds."
Jaghatai spoke, his voice calm.
"Angron's legion."
The leading World Eaters warrior turned toward him.
"War Hounds is a name of the past."
He said.
"Now, we are called World Eaters. And our father..."
He stepped aside, clearing the path to the rift.
Within the rift, a massive figure was emerging.
