Chapter 123: The Sun Rises

~7 min read 1,213 words

Xindi and Li Shuangjun were engaged in battle with the Beast Race troops charging into the Inner City gate; both sides had suffered many casualties, though the Beast Race had lost more.

They continued to push forward until they reached the gate, blocking these Orcs outside.

Li Shuangjun used his Two-handed Greatsword to decapitate an Orc, the muscles in his arms even thicker than before.

For a Psionic like him whose Back Spirit is a melee weapon, he is merely a soldier with slightly better physical fitness than a normal person during long-range exchanges; only in close-quarters combat can his full strength be unleashed.

However, on a battlefield like this, opportunities for melee combat are rare, and even when they arise, one must guard against covering fire or sniper shots from the enemy.

After the City Defense Cannons outside stabilized the situation, they began firing at the Orcs below, and the momentum of the Orcs' assault weakened significantly.

Through a gap in the gate, Xindi saw a flash of red light outside; he saw the distant Orc Base Camp burning fiercely.

"Hahaha, this must be Yingzhou's doing! Who would have thought he could actually torch the Orcs' Base Camp!"

Xindi shouted excitedly, the corners of his mouth curling upward in thrill.

"Yingzhou? Is that the tall guy from the Ninth Defense Zone?"

Li Shuangjun pierced the throat of an Orc that had charged in and shoved hard, finishing it off.

"Yes, I'm taking a few men to the wall to command; I'll leave this place to you! I reckon the Beast Race should be retreating soon!"

"Don't worry, Chief! I will not let another one of these Orcs enter the gate!"

Xindi took several Guards and left quickly, heading for the wall.

Mailun looked at the disadvantageous situation on the battlefield: the warriors who had entered the gate gap were being pushed back out, the wall had not been taken, and their own Rune Cannons had all been destroyed; this siege battle was a total failure for him.

Mailun gritted his teeth in anger and finally said fiercely, "Retreat! Go find Maike!"

After receiving the order to retreat, these Orc warriors left behind many more corpses under the attacks of the soldiers behind them before they all withdrew.

Watching the rapidly retreating Orc troops, Yingzhou hid to check the Task he had accepted earlier.

Two lottery chances had been credited, and the crisis in the Inner City was now resolved.

These Orcs retreated very quickly; after all, most of their equipment was in the Base Camp, and now that it had been burned down, they could just retreat directly.

"Phew... the crisis before us is finally resolved," Yingzhou exhaled slowly and muttered to himself.

Yingzhou brought the Catachan toughs to the battlefield littered with corpses, where the smell of blood and gunpowder mixed together; at the gap in the gate, Xindi smiled and walked out of the gap after seeing Yingzhou approaching with the Catachan toughs.

"Hahaha! Captain Ying! Thanks to you, our Inner City has finally been defended; thank you so much!"

Yingzhou looked at Xindi, whose eyes were bloodshot; although there was a smile on his face, the exhaustion could not be hidden.

Yingzhou smiled and walked up to Xindi, saying, "It is you who deserve the credit; if you hadn't fought to the death to hold the Inner City, nothing I did in the rear would have mattered. This victory belongs to every soldier who sacrificed and bled on this battlefield."

"Hahaha, you are too modest. Come, come, let's go into the Inner City and talk!"

Xindi looked up at Yingzhou and said happily.

"No need, I saved quite a few survivors in the Outer City. I want to bring them to the Inner City first; can you accommodate them?"

Xindi looked at Yingzhou in surprise. He remembered that Yingzhou had gone to the Outer City for two or three days, right? How did he manage to harass the Orc Base Camp while also saving survivors? And, looking at him, he had saved quite a few.

"Of course you can. Just bring the survivors here; I will talk to Kelin and Kaxi about the rest. Shall I send some people to help you?" Xindi promised, patting his chest.

"No need, as long as you can receive them, that is enough." Yingzhou waved his hand, declining Xindi's kindness.

Watching Yingzhou's departing back, Xindi couldn't help but click his tongue, "What was the Ninth Defense Zone thinking? Sending such a powerful squad over here?"

Hearing Xindi's words, Li Shuangjun asked, "Chief, why do you say that?"

Xindi looked at Li Shuangjun beside him and explained, "You have to know what the situation was like here in the Fourth Defense Zone before. If Yingzhou hadn't torched their Base Camp outside this time, we would probably all be corpses by now."

After a pause, Xindi continued, "Sending people to the Fourth Defense Zone is a death sentence; how could they possibly send a powerful unit here? Besides, I talked to Yingzhou before, and his squad was just recently formed. Clearly, the Ninth Defense Zone sent them here to die."

Hearing Xindi's explanation, Li Shuangjun nodded thoughtfully, "Doesn't that mean the Ninth Defense Zone has no idea how powerful he is?"

Xindi nodded, "Very likely, otherwise none of this makes sense. The Ninth Defense Zone is facing the Zerg's assault. I heard those Zerg are even more powerful than these Orcs, though these Orcs can replicate weapons and use their technology to convert them into equipment they can use."

Speaking of this, Xindi recalled.

"Moreover, before Chief Bansen sacrificed himself, the unit led by the Beast Race High Priest was truly powerful. Their height and physique were similar to Captain Ying's. I really don't know how that unit was created; their performance on the battlefield was very strong, and we were no match for them. If it weren't for Chief Bansen's strength, I might have died at the hands of those Orcs that time."

The surrounding soldiers were surprised when they heard what Xindi said.

"Orcs around 2.6 meters tall? Wouldn't one slap send us flying?"

"As expected, the Beast Race is a strange race."

"Damn it, why do these Orcs always have so many tricks?"

Seeing that the topic had drifted, Xindi shouted to the soldiers behind him.

"Alright, the crisis in the Inner City is temporarily resolved. What we need to do now is clear the battlefield; survivors from the Outer City will be arriving here shortly. Get moving!"

"Yes!"

After arranging the tasks for the soldiers, Xindi noticed the sun slowly rising from the east; the first rays of the morning sun shone on his face, warm and comfortable.

Xindi enjoyed the warmth of the sun on his face, and with the Inner City's crisis temporarily resolved, his entire nervous system relaxed.

"What a good omen; after the Inner City crisis is resolved, the sun rises. I hope we can successfully overcome the difficulties ahead."

Xindi sighed with emotion, returned to the Inner City, and said to the Guard following him.

"Help me contact Kelin and Kaxi. Tell them the Inner City crisis is temporarily resolved, I am going to accept survivors from the Outer City, and have them prepare supplies."

"Yes!"
