Chapter 1255: Assassinating Corax

~6 min read 1,084 words

Wa'erduosi Star Diplomatic Reception Station.

The door to the Dongqu Xiuxiqu opened on time, and Corax stepped out.

Behind him followed three Diplomats and six Anya Shouwei, their footsteps uniform, silent and soundless.

At the end of the corridor, Salmox was already waiting there with his team.

"Lord Corax."

Salmox bowed slightly.

"Did you rest well?"

Corax nodded.

"Very well. Your side's hospitality is very thorough."

"Then let us head to the conference hall."

Salmox turned to the side and made a gesture of invitation.

"Please."

Corax stepped forward and walked side by side with Salmox.

Behind them, the entourages of both sides automatically split into two columns, maintaining an appropriate distance.

"Lord Corax, how do you find the scenery of Wa'erduosi Star?"

Salmox asked casually, attempting to break the Silence.

Corax's gaze swept past the window.

"Very... full of vitality. These volcanoes make one feel the pulse of the planet."

Salmox nodded.

"Indeed. The Ash People grew up in such an environment. We believe that only in the raging fire can a true will be forged."

Corax smiled slightly.

"An interesting perspective."

The two continued to walk forward, followed by a long procession.

The corridor echoed with uniform footsteps, occasionally interspersed with the low rumble of a distant volcanic eruption.

Just at this moment, an Ash service worker pushed a cleaning cart out from a side passage.

Weikesi pushed the cleaning cart along the corridor, gradually approaching the party of Corax and Salmox.

The soldiers of the Burning Flame Guard merely glanced at him, then shifted their gaze away.

An ordinary service worker, appearing in the corridor dozens of times a day, nothing worth being vigilant about.

The warriors of the Raven Guard also just glanced, likewise not paying any mind.

Their attention was focused on the officials and soldiers of the Ash side; an Alien pushing a cleaning cart did not constitute a threat.

Corax and Salmox continued their conversation, discussing the topics to be debated in the afternoon.

The two parties crossed paths.

Weikesi's cleaning cart brushed past the party, less than three meters from Corax.

At this very instant, Weikesi's hand moved.

His right hand pulled a weapon from the bottom layer of the cleaning cart, the muzzle already aimed at Corax.

Pulling the trigger.

A blinding Energy Beam headed straight for Corax's heart.

But someone was faster than him.

An Anya Shouwei, Sailusi, had already lunged toward Corax the moment the Energy Beam was fired.

His speed was so fast it left an afterimage, his black Power Armor cutting between Corax and the muzzle.

The Energy Beam struck his heart.

Sailusi's body jolted violently, a charred hole bursting open on his Power Armor.

His hand gripped Corax's arm tightly, pushing him toward a safe direction.

"Assassin!"

The roar of another Raven Guard resounded through the corridor.

Five Raven Guard acted simultaneously.

"Sailusi! Sailusi!"

No response.

"He is dead."

The voice of that Anya Shouwei was low, but the fury contained within it was enough to ignite the entire planet.

"Catch that assassin!"

Another warrior roared.

But Weikesi was already gone.

The moment he fired, he had already discarded the Energy Gun and blended into the chaotic crowd.

The officials of the Ash side were panicked, fleeing in all directions; the soldiers of the Burning Flame Guard tried to maintain order but did not know which direction to pursue; those accompanying service workers screamed and crouched down, hands covering their heads, completely unaware of what had happened.

A service worker, under the gaze of dozens of eyes, had just disappeared like that.

"Seal the entire building!"

Salmox's roar rose up.

"No one is allowed in or out! Immediately!"

The soldiers of the Burning Flame Guard only then reacted, rushing toward every exit.

Corax was shielded in a corner by two Raven Guard, his face devoid of any expression.

He looked down at the corpse of Sailusi.

The loyal warrior lay on the ground facing upward, a charred bullet hole in his black Power Armor, positioned exactly over his heart.

"Father!"

A Raven Guard shouted.

"Are you injured?"

Corax shook his head.

"I am fine."

His gaze shifted away from the corpse of Saiweilu and swept across the chaotic corridor.

The officials of the Ashes were still in a panic, the soldiers of the Burning Flame Guard were in disarray, and the service staff were curled up in the corners, trembling.

Salmox came running over, stumbling.

"Lord Corax! This... this was absolutely not our doing! I swear! Someone must be trying to sabotage the negotiations! Trying to frame us!"

Corax looked at him.

"Lord Salmox."

Salmox's throat moved.

"I... I am here."

"Your service staff just attempted to kill me."

Salmox's face turned even paler.

"I... I know... but this is not..."

"My warrior died protecting me."

Salmox nearly collapsed to the ground.

"Lord Corax, I swear in the name of the Ash Star Alliance, this was absolutely not planned by us! We have no reason to do this! If you die here, we would only invite total destruction! We are not that stupid!"

Corax remained in Silence for a few seconds.

Those few seconds felt as long as centuries to Salmox.

Then Corax spoke.

"I believe you."

Salmox was stunned for a moment.

"You... you believe me?"

Corax nodded.

"You are right. You have no reason to do this. My death here would bring you no benefits. Only harm."

He paused, his gaze sweeping across the chaotic corridor once more.

"But this matter must be investigated clearly."

Salmox nodded desperately.

"Of course! It will be investigated clearly! We will cooperate fully! We will mobilize all resources! We will definitely find that assassin!"

Corax looked at him, a complex light flashing in his eyes.

"Find them, and then what?"

Salmox gritted his teeth.

"Hand them over to you for disposal. No matter who is behind them, no matter where they come from, the Ash Star Alliance will give you an explanation."

Corax nodded.

"Good. I will wait."

He turned and looked at the corpse of Sailusi.

"Take him back. He died to save me."

Two Raven Guard stepped forward and carefully lifted the remains of Saiweilu.

Corax took one last look in that direction, then turned and walked toward the lounge area.

"Today's negotiations are canceled. We will speak again once the matter is cleared up."

Salmox shouted from behind.

"Lord Corax! Please believe us! We will definitely..."

Corax did not respond.

His back disappeared at the end of the corridor.
