Chapter 1323: The Ashes Fleet Delivering Meals

~7 min read 1,351 words

Three hours later, the Ashes Fleet jumped out of the warp channel.

Meis opened his eyes and walked to the observation window.

Then, his smile froze.

Outside the window, it was not the battlefield he had imagined.

It was not a few Zerg ships, not a few bugs, not an enemy that could be easily crushed.

It was an ocean.

An ocean of Zerg.

Countless Zerg creatures spread across the starry sky, dense and overwhelming, blotting out the heavens.

Their sizes ranged from a fist to a warship, and their forms varied, but every single one was lethal.

There were Bio-Cannon ships the size of warships, and Bio-ships larger than asteroids.

Their corpses floated in the vacuum, but the living ones were even more numerous, too many to count.

In the distance, the Canaan Fleet was struggling to hold on, its defensive line already shattered.

Artillery fire exploded within the swarm, flesh and blood splattering, but the number of Zerg seemed as if it would never decrease.

And further away, in the orbit of Viridian Star, countless Spore Cysts were falling toward the planet's surface.

Each Spore Cyst was like a meteorite, dragging a long tail of fire, crashing into the ground and releasing hundreds upon hundreds of Zerg creatures.

"General... this..."

The Adjutant's voice was trembling.

Meis's face was deathly pale.

"This is not a normal Zerg. This is... what is this?"

"General! The Zerg have discovered us! They are turning! The number... cannot be estimated!"

Meis gritted his teeth.

"Damn it, all ships, enter combat status! Open fire!"

The Ashes Fleet's artillery began to roar.

Energy Beams and Plasma Rune Bullets poured down like a rainstorm, carving blinding trajectories across the starry sky.

The Zerg vanguard was reduced to fragments in the artillery fire, flesh and blood splattering.

But the Zerg behind them continued to surge forward.

Their numbers were too great. Too great for the artillery to ever finish them off.

An Ashes Capital Ship was struck by several Bio-Cannon ships simultaneously; its shields collapsed and its hull burst open.

The fire of the explosion bloomed in the starry sky, and thousands of Ashes soldiers were instantly turned to ashes.

Another Capital Ship was rammed by a massive Bio-ship; its hull was torn apart, air leaked out, and soldiers were sucked out of the cabin, suffocating in the vacuum.

The assault ship group charged toward the swarm, attempting to tear open a gap.

But the number of Zerg was too great, too great for the assault ships to even charge into.

They were surrounded by the swarm, torn to pieces, and Devoured.

"General! The left flank defense has been breached!"

The Adjutant shouted.

Meis turned to look at the left flank.

There, the Zerg were pouring into the gap, flanking the rear of the fleet.

"Deploy the reserves there! Plug the gap!"

"The reserves have already been sent out! They can't hold it!"

Meis's fists clenched.

"All ships, move closer to Viridian Star! We need support from the ground troops!"

The fleet began to move closer to Viridian Star.

But the Zerg were faster; they surged from all directions, splitting the fleet into several pieces.

Meis looked at the light dots on the holographic screen, his four eyes filled with despair.

"Notify the ground troops that we are on our way. Tell them to hold on."

The Adjutant nodded.

The communication signal was sent.

But whether it could be received, Meis did not know.

On the surface of Viridian Star, the capital.

This city was once the most prosperous center of the entire star sector, with a population exceeding five hundred million.

Tall buildings lined the wide streets, and a massive Spaceport operated outside the city, transporting the technological products produced on the planet to the entire Canaan Star Alliance.

At this moment, this city was burning.

In the sky, countless Spore Cysts were falling.

Each Spore Cyst was like a meteorite, crashing into the ground, blasting open massive craters, and releasing hundreds upon hundreds of Zerg creatures.

On the ground, the Canaan Star Alliance's defense forces were fighting to the death.

General Valerius stood on the observation deck of the city defense headquarters, his two eyes fixed on those dense black dots in the sky.

"General! The East District defense line has been breached! The Zerg have already entered the residential area!"

The Communications Officer's voice came through the Communication Device.

Valerius's fists clenched.

"Have the 3rd Armored Division go and plug the gap! Tell them, even if they fight to the last man, they must not let the bugs enter the city center!"

"Yes!"

He turned to look at another Communications Officer.

"What about the West District?"

The Communications Officer's face turned pale.

"General... the West District... the West District has already fallen..."

Valerius's pupils contracted violently.

"Fallen? What about the 21st Infantry Division?"

The Communications Officer shook his head.

"The 21st Infantry Division... has been completely wiped out. The number of Zerg is too great; they crawled out from underground, dropped from the sky, and swarmed in from all directions. The soldiers didn't even have time to fire their guns before they were overwhelmed."

Valerius was in Silence for a second.

"What about the North District?"

The Communications Officer pulled up the data.

"The North District is still holding. The 4th Armored Division and the 72nd Infantry Division are resisting by relying on the building complexes. But the number of Zerg is constantly increasing; they cannot hold on for much longer."

Valerius gritted his teeth.

"Notify them to hold on for two more hours. Reinforcements will arrive immediately!"

"Yes!"

Viridian City, North District, the defensive line of the 4th Armored Division.

This was originally the city's industrial zone, filled with factories and warehouses.

The soldiers of the 4th Armored Division relied on the building complexes, using tanks and artillery to construct defensive lines one after another.

But the Zerg did not care about defensive lines.

The first wave of Zerg were blade-bugs, Hormagaunts.

Their bodies were like wolves, their forelimbs were sharp Scything Talons, and they charged toward the defensive line at an astonishing speed.

Energy Beams struck them, flesh and blood splattered, but those behind trampled over their companions' corpses to continue the charge.

"Fire! Fire!"

The Commander roared.

The tanks' main guns thundered, Rune Bullets exploded within the swarm, and fragments flew everywhere.

But the number of Zerg was too great, so great that the Rune Bullets could never finish them off.

The blade-bugs charged into the defensive line.

Scything Talons swung, and soldiers were cut in half.

Tanks were overturned, and the crews were dragged out and torn to shreds.

The defensive line began to collapse.

The second wave of Zerg were gun-bugs, Termagants.

They followed behind the blade-bugs, using flesh-borer guns to shoot Fleshborer Beetles.

The Fleshborer Beetles exploded on the soldiers' body armor, crazily Devouring flesh and blood.

Their range was not as good as the Human weapons, but their numbers made up for everything.

The third wave of Zerg were brain-bugs.

They hovered in the air, releasing Psychic Shock waves.

The soldiers bled from their seven orifices and fell to the ground, unable to rise.

The tanks' electronic equipment was interfered with, leaving them unable to move.

The fourth wave of Zerg were executioners, Carnifexes.

They were massive biological tanks.

They charged into the defensive line, Scything Talons swung, tanks were torn to shreds, buildings were pushed over, and soldiers were trampled into meat patties.

The Commander watched this scene, his two eyes filled with despair.

"Retreat! Retreat! Retreat to the city center!"

The soldiers turned and ran. But the Zerg's speed was much faster than theirs.

The blade-bugs caught up, Scything Talons swung, and they fell one by one.

The gun-bugs fired from behind, and Fleshborer Beetles exploded in the crowd.

The brain-bugs released Psychic Shock waves, and large swaths of people fell.

The Commander was caught up to by an executioner.

He turned, raised his energy sword, and charged toward that giant beast.

"For Canaan!"

The executioner's Scything Talon fell.

The Commander's body was cut in half.
