Chapter 44: Biochemical Warhorse
After Xu Fenqiu carried the child out from inside the incubation egg, the entire massive Hatchery suddenly emitted a violent trembling sound. The ground shook, and the walls quivered slightly, as if an earthquake were about to arrive.
"What happened? Chenjie, has the time you set run out?" Lao Huo's voice carried tension and seriousness. He gripped the weapon in his hand tightly, prepared to deal with any situation that might arise.
"No, damn it, how could I make such a low-level mistake?" Chenjie widened his eyes, looking at the tremors all around in disbelief. He knew he wouldn't make such a foolish mistake, but the scene before him left him unable to explain it.
Xu Fenqiu calmly placed the child in his arms to the side and then stood up. His gaze was full of resolve as he issued orders to the squad members: "Quickly rescue these children; we must leave here before the Zerg arrive!" His voice was firm and decisive, making one feel an inexplicable sense of security.
The 17 squad members acted without hesitation; they quickly found the incubation eggs closest to them and began to imitate the actions Xu Fenqiu had just performed. They used sharp tactical knives to carefully cut open the incubation eggs, attempting to save the children inside.
Each cut was accompanied by the sound of eggshells cracking, saving these young lives. After some of the older children woke up, they struggled hard, trying to stand up.
The team members quickly rescued all the children in the incubation room, a total of 42 children, and the squad members gently comforted them.
After the squad members walked out of the incubation room with the children, they saw that quite a few Zerg were already rushing toward this location.
"Quick, take the children and run!" Xu Fenqiu had everyone take the children who could not yet move, while those who could already move followed behind.
Less than half a minute after the group left the incubation room, those Zerg rushed into the incubation room, and bursts of roars came from inside.
"Quick, keep up!" Xu Fenqiu shouted loudly, leading the squad members and the children as they rushed out of the Hatchery and ran toward the safe zone.
But after coming out of the Hatchery, Xu Fenqiu discovered that even more Zerg were returning to the Hatchery, and they were now surrounded.
"Captain! What should we do?" Guo Weihua asked with a somewhat anxious tone.
Sweat had already seeped from under Xu Fenqiu's mask onto his forehead; he looked back at the group of children. These children had been saved, and the Hatchery had such a huge reaction—what exactly were these Zerg doing?
Xu Fenqiu took a deep breath and said, "I am going to take a few squad members and expose ourselves to draw these Zerg away; the others can take the opportunity to retreat."
The squad members fell into a brief Silence, and Yingfang stepped forward and said, "I'll go; I'll go with you to draw the Zerg away."
"Yingfang, you cannot have anything happen to you. If you don't make it back, your mother will surely collapse." Xu Fenqiu shook his head and refused.
"Captain, now is not the time to consider that. Every one of us has family we are worried about; let me go with you," Yingfang said to Xu Fenqiu with a sincere tone.
"I'll go too!" Chenjie raised his hand and said.
Immediately following that, two more members in the squad raised their hands. Xu Fenqiu had wanted to say something more, but seeing that the Zerg were gradually closing in, he could only nod in agreement.
After the five of them broke away from Lao Huo's Gray Mist, they were quickly discovered by the Zerg that had run back, and they came roaring toward them.
"Run!" Xu Fenqiu shouted loudly.
Afterward, he led the four squad members to flee in the opposite direction, while Lao Huo and the other squad members quickly retreated with the group of children.
Yingzhou turned off his still-humming Chainsword; his whole body was as if he had been fished out of water, sweat sliding down his forehead and dripping onto the ground. He gasped for breath, looking at the tragic scene around him with weary yet resolute eyes.
After he arrived at the Second Defense Line, the Krieg soldiers at the first defense line had also been submerged under the Zerg's offensive. Despite having artillery support from the rear, these survivors who had not undergone actual combat still suffered a great loss in front of the Zerg. They were unable to withstand the Zerg's fierce attacks and fell one after another, blood staining the earth red.
Fortunately, there were survivors in the Second Defense Line who had drunk the Gene Enhancement Serum, as well as the Krieg soldiers he had summoned in advance, which prevented the defense line from collapsing at the first touch.
"Hoo... this shouldn't be? Their time hasn't arrived yet, so why would they leave here?" Yingzhou looked at the newly risen sun, panting as he spoke to himself. Could it be that some unexpected situation occurred? Or did some change happen within the Zerg?
"Hiss... I don't know, but they all seemed to suddenly stop their attack and then quickly retreated. I have never seen this situation before," Ajie said, covering his severed left arm with his right hand, his lips somewhat pale.
Yingzhou looked around; there were still quite a few survivors left alive. After all, this wave of Zerg had not fully attacked; otherwise, at least half of the people here would have died.
"Get the injured people settled and receive treatment. I'll leave this place to you for now," Yingzhou said to Ajie, looking in the direction the Zerg had left.
"Okay, wait, what do you mean? You aren't thinking of going to chase the Zerg, are you?" Ajie asked in disbelief.
"Yes, I need to know why the Zerg left like this. If they counterattack, we won't be able to hold them off." He looked at the many injured survivors and spoke. "Besides, I am confident that I won't be caught by the Zerg."
Ajie had no choice but to agree, "Alright, then watch your safety; I will settle the wounded first."
Yingzhou walked out of the trench and summoned the Krieg Cavalry he had just redeemed. 35 Krieg Cavalry riding Biochemical Warhorses appeared before Yingzhou, ready for battle, and saluted Yingzhou.
Yingzhou touched the sturdy muscles of a Biochemical Warhorse with his broad palm, then flipped onto its back.
"Move out!"
Yingzhou shouted, and the 35 Krieg Cavalry followed closely behind.
Yingzhou felt the sense of power brought by the Biochemical Warhorse beneath him; objects before his eyes flashed past rapidly, and the rapidly retreating swarm of Zerg could already be faintly seen ahead.
Scattered Zerg were still joining them from the surroundings, and these Zerg were running rapidly in one direction.
When Yingzhou rode the Biochemical Warhorse across a neat trench, he clearly felt a commotion in the swarm ahead, but it quickly subsided; the swarm did not pay any attention to Yingzhou and the others.
This should be the boundary of the Hunting Ground. Based on the commotion that had just occurred in the swarm, Yingzhou deduced that this was the Zerg's Hunting Ground; it seemed he had already left the Hunting Ground.
"Follow them, but don't get discovered," Yingzhou ordered in a low voice. He led the Krieg Cavalry, lowered their speed, and kept a certain distance from the swarm. If there were Humans who could make these Zerg ignore the Hunting Ground and escape, then there must be something more important than that.
They tracked the swarm through ruins and wilderness until they arrived in front of a massive, deep-red Zerg Hatchery. Yingzhou looked at the scene before him, his heart shocked; he understood that this was the Zerg base.
