Chapter 55: Extracting a Legion
Yingzhou had no choice but to find a piece of wood to sit on, then asked, "Legion Commander, is there something you wanted to see me about?"
"Hahaha, it's my first time seeing someone with your build; I find you quite rare. Combat in the jungle is different from other battlefields. Tomorrow, some veterans will take you all out for a trip. The surrounding area is relatively safe, but further out, it becomes the battlefield between us and the Orcs." Nie Hao took a cigarette from his military uniform, lit it, and took a deep drag.
"Yes, I know that; Deputy Legion Commander Hu Jie already told me," Yingzhou replied, watching Nie Hao puffing away.
"You are the first recruit to come to me, so there are some things I need to remind you of."
Yingzhou sat to the side waiting for Nie Hao's follow-up, only to find that the Legion Commander did not continue.
Nie Hao finished the cigarette in his hand before continuing, "You must have some secrets, or you have inadvertently become connected to some secrets of the Human Alliance's high command. You don't need to overthink it; you might not even know those secrets yourself, so just go with the flow."
"How can you be so sure?" Yingzhou asked at this moment.
"You aren't the first one sent here to die. Others have come before; one was a craftsman from the logistics department who was suddenly assigned here. During the first outing to fight the Beast Race, he died on the battlefield. How could a craftsman possibly survive on the battlefield? Especially in this kind of environment."
Nie Hao paused, then continued.
"I've had at least ten people like that come here. Not a single one survived."
Upon hearing this news, Yingzhou began to reflect on his previous actions to see where he might have caught the attention of the Human Alliance's high command.
Seeing Yingzhou lost in thought, Nie Hao smiled and said, "I think you should be able to survive here, because the people who came before were all logistics personnel, and you are the first combatant. Perhaps the high command doesn't know your current strength. This is a good thing. As long as you serve under me, my unit is relatively safer compared to other legions—safe in a certain sense."
Yingzhou nodded and replied, "Thank you for telling me this. Why did you tell me?"
"I felt like it. Alright, I need to take a nap." After saying this, Nie Hao pulled a military cap over his head.
"Yes!" Yingzhou saluted Nie Hao and turned to leave the tent.
When Yingzhou was about to return to his own tent, he saw from afar that Fan Ge was gathered with a group of people in the open space in the center of the camp, seemingly watching something.
Fan Ge also noticed Yingzhou; he quickly squeezed out of the crowd, walked briskly toward Yingzhou, and said, "You've come at the right time. The veterans who are taking us to familiarize ourselves with the surrounding environment tomorrow are here to test the strength of us newcomers. That group of veterans is truly very strong; only a few of us have been able to get the better of them."
Just then, a burst of cheers suddenly erupted from the crowd.
"This newcomer is capable! He actually managed to subdue that guy Gu En!"
"Gu En! Are you even trying? You actually got suppressed by a newcomer!"
Yingzhou walked closer to the crowd and saw a shirtless, burly man being pinned to the ground by a young man, unable to move.
Even though the muscles on his body were straining, it was to no avail, and in the end, he had to admit defeat.
"Fine, you win, newcomer," the burly man named Gu En said, patting the ground with his hand.
The young man then released his grip, slowly stood up, and said, "I concede."
"What's your name? Your strength is decent," Gu En asked, working his numb arms and thighs.
"Zhao Jian, formerly served in the 36th Legion," the young man replied, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
"Good, I'll remember you. Just make sure you don't die in your first battle," Gu En said, patting Zhao Jian on the shoulder, then spotted Yingzhou standing behind the crowd.
"Hey, big guy, you want to try too? I heard you can trade a few blows with the Legion Commander? Anyone else want to try?" Gu En said to the group of veterans.
At this moment, a man missing an ear stood up and said, "I'll give it a try!"
Seeing this, Yingzhou did not decline; he walked out from behind the crowd and arrived in the center of the open space.
Originally, this man was 1.9 meters tall, which was considered tall in the crowd, but after he came in front of Yingzhou, he instantly felt his own body shrink.
"My name is Yingzhou. Please go easy on me."
"Zhong Chaofeng."
Seeing that both were ready, Gu En said, "This is just a normal sparring match. You cannot use your Back Spirit, and you cannot intentionally harm the other party. Stop at the point of contact; everyone has to go out tomorrow, so it's no good to get injured. If there are no objections, then, begin!"
The moment Gu En said "begin," Zhong Chaofeng tried to test Yingzhou's reaction, but he saw Yingzhou's large palms quickly grab his shoulders. Then his vision flipped, and by the time he reacted, he was already lying on the ground.
"What just happened!"
"Damn, that was too fast, right?"
The people around called out in surprise. It hadn't even been five seconds since Gu En shouted "begin," and he was already down?
Even Yingzhou looked at his own hands in disbelief. Hmm? Have his reaction speed and strength become this powerful now?
Zhong Chaofeng slowly sat up from the ground and said unconvinced, "Wait, I was careless just now. Let's go again!"
Yingzhou said somewhat apologetically, "Did I hurt you anywhere just now?"
Zhong Chaofeng waved his hand and shook his head, saying, "It's fine, let's start over! This time I'm going to use some real skill!"
Upon hearing this, Yingzhou nodded solemnly, "Alright, come on."
One minute later, Zhong Chaofeng was lying on the ground again, though this time he didn't look completely bewildered.
"Fine, I lost. I have a good feeling you'll be able to survive in this jungle!" Zhong Chaofeng stood up and said to Yingzhou.
"Yes, I hope so," Yingzhou replied with a nod and shook hands with Zhong Chaofeng in a friendly manner.
As the sky darkened, another group of people returned to the camp, including several wounded.
Among the new batch of soldiers, several sighed after seeing this scene, lamenting their bad luck at being transferred to this unit.
After seeing this, Yingzhou returned to his tent and began Gathering Spiritual Power.
After finishing, Yingzhou opened the System Panel to check his current status.
【Host: Yingzhou】
【Currently Owned Legion: Death Korps of Krieg.】
【Legion Capacity: 170 people. (213 people)】
【Summonable Legion Personnel: 170 people.】
【Legion Extraction Attempts Remaining: 1.】
"Oh, right, that previous Task reward did indeed include an increase in Legion extraction attempts."
Yingzhou only then remembered the Task he had accepted in the Hunting Ground; he hadn't expected the reward to have already been issued.
"System, begin Legion extraction."
