Chapter 583: Legion Engagement
88th Legion advance force.
"Lord Astartes, those Zerg black-winged insects and crystal death-servants have stopped appearing on the battlefield as of 10 minutes ago, and the more threatening Zerg combat units on the battlefield have also begun to decrease one after another."
Deputy Regiment Commander of the 88th Legion, Bao Chengqu, is reporting the battle situation to the War Dog Space Marine Zandaer, who is fighting on the front line.
"That is a perfect opportunity! We shall charge in one go and annihilate the Aliens! Give the Aliens no chance to catch their breath!"
"Yes! Lord Astartes!"
After ending the communication, Bao Chengqu said to the Krieg Commissar beside him.
"Lord Astartes has ordered us to begin the counterattack!"
The Krieg Commissar nodded, looked toward the artillery positions in the rear, and spoke.
"Following the Emperor's will, you are responsible for artillery strikes, and we are responsible for following Lord Astartes in a frontal assault!"
Bao Chengqu was not the least bit surprised that the Krieg Commissar said this so easily; after all, after fighting alongside the Death Korps of Krieg, a message was sent directly by the Emperor to the Military District.
Do not let the Death Korps of Krieg provide artillery support; the 88th Legion must control the artillery positions, and ammunition must be kept in sufficient supply.
"Hoo... Praise the Emperor. If it weren't for the Emperor's will, it would really be difficult to persuade the Captain."
The Krieg Commissar took a deep breath and parted ways with Bao Chengqu.
Upon learning that the artillery positions were not under their control, the Krieg Captain was very puzzled; if the Krieg Commissar had not handed the Emperor's will to the Krieg Captain in advance, he might have been branded a traitor and fallen on the position.
Even so, the Krieg Captain still muttered a sentence.
"That would be too much of a waste of ammunition."
At this moment on the battlefield, the sounds of artillery fire rang out everywhere.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
"Soldiers! Enemy-repelling regulations! Fix bayonets! Prepare for a bloody battle! The time to give your lives for the Emperor has arrived!"
Hearing the Krieg Commissar's shout, the Krieg soldiers in the trenches silently pulled 45-centimeter-long bayonets from their waists and attached them to their Lucius Pattern 98 Lasguns.
"Click."
The Chainsword in the hand of a Krieg Commissar was dripping with green Zerg blood.
Several Krieg Commissars were conveying combat instructions throughout the trenches, waiting for the final charge signal.
Zandaer rested his Chainaxe on the edge of the trench, and the joints of his MK2 Power Armor emitted a hum as the hydraulic systems pressurized.
He said to his 9 brothers in the communication channel.
"Brothers, to answer Father's expectations! For the Emperor! Kill!"
"For the Lord of Red Sand! Kill!!!"
Low roars from other War Dog Space Marines echoed in the communication channel; Zandaer started the Chainaxe in his hand and charged out of the trench.
The moment Zandaer leaped out of the trench, the Krieg Commissar also immediately blew his whistle, and the Krieg soldiers quickly vaulted out of the trenches, following the War Dog Space Marines charging in the front, the lenses of their gas masks reflecting the artillery fire and biological plasma intertwining in the sky.
The shrill whistle sounded extremely piercing amidst the artillery fire.
The artillery formation composed of Basilisk Self-Propelled Artillery was firing into the dark green fog, covering the charge of the War Dog Space Marines and the Krieg soldiers.
A sound of hoofbeats rose from the flank; 3,500 Krieg Cavalry formed a wedge formation and pierced into the Insect Tide like a sharp knife. After a series of explosions, the Krieg Cavalry drew their 95-centimeter-long Single-edged Curved Swords, impaling a Swift Insect that lunged at them during the high-speed charge.
The Krieg Bio-Steeds beneath them kept trampling Zerg that hadn't had time to jump and attack; soon the hooves were stained green, and every stomp splashed thick green blood, along with some armor fragments.
Following behind the Krieg Cavalry were armored units composed of Chimera Armored Vehicles and Leman Russ Tanks, also pouring firepower into the surging Insect Tide.
Zandaer swung his Chainaxe into the insect swarm, being the first to hack several lunging Sickle Insects into a sky full of acid and flesh, while shouting loudly.
"Witness the Emperor's wrath!"
"Reload! Keep firing!"
Amidst the hoarse roars of the Artillery Observer, the Basilisk Self-Propelled Artillery behind finished reloading and fired again at the Insect Tide in the fog.
In the deafening roar, the shells exploded thirty meters high fountains of flesh and blood in front of the War Dog Space Marines.
Zerg remains tossed up by the shockwave rained down onto the gray greatcoats of the Krieg soldiers.
"The Emperor witnesses our Loyalty!"
The Servo System of Zandaer's MK2 Power Armor burst with sound; Zandaer leaped up, gripping the Chainaxe with both hands, and the Chainaxe, wrapped in a roar, cleaved open a three-meter-tall Death-servant Insect.
Acid blood splashed onto the Ceramite armor, hissing with blue smoke, but it failed to delay the slaughter of this War Dog Space Marine in the slightest.
The gray wave formed by the Krieg soldiers instantly flooded the crater-pitted battlefield, tens of thousands of 45-centimeter bayonets refracting cold light.
The Death Korps soldiers in the very front row were locked in a melee with the Insect Tide, while the second row of bayonets had already precisely thrust out from the gaps between the corpses of their comrades, stabbing the ugly Aliens to death.
The Battle Cannons of several Leman Russ Tanks erupted with incandescent light, opening a large hole in the body of a ten-meter-tall Tank Insect.
The Chimera Armored Vehicle groups followed to the left and right of the Leman Russ Tanks, their Multi-lasers melting the Sickle Insects attempting to flank them into boiling slime.
The vehicle tracks were covered in shattered Zerg carapaces, emitting a crisp sound as the tracks rolled.
As the number of the Insect Tide gradually decreased, Zandaer crushed the head of the last Swift Insect, standing atop the mountain of insect corpses.
Looking out, it was a field of remains; the Krieg soldiers were using bayonets to finish off insect corpses that looked relatively intact, while the location of the Zerg Incubation Nest had already self-destructed just before Zandaer had even approached.
"The Aliens had already retreated long ago, leaving these cannon fodder to cover them."
Zandaer walked down from the mountain of corpses, his feet making "crunch, crunch" sounds, and said to his other brothers in the communication channel.
"Zandaer, it doesn't matter. The Emperor once said, 'The monk may run, but the temple cannot run away.' Those Aliens have only delayed their death."
Zandaer's left eye under his helmet narrowed slightly, and after a few seconds of silence, he said.
"Uh... Virgil, did the Emperor explain what that means?"
"Uh... no, this was something Father mentioned in passing before. I think it should be... appropriate to use here, right?"
On the other side, Virgil somewhat awkwardly crushed the head of a Giant-Pincer Insect that had been chopped in two.
On the battlefield, after eliminating the Insect Tide, the Krieg soldiers began to clean up the battlefield.
Three Krieg soldiers were piling up the Zerg corpses. After the corpses were piled up enough, the Krieg soldiers waiting on the side raised the flamethrowers in their hands toward the Zerg corpse pile, using scorching flames to purify these Alien filth.
A Krieg soldier discovered his comrade beneath the insect corpses; just as he prepared to pull his comrade out from under the insect corpses, he exerted force, only to pull his comrade out halfway.
This Krieg soldier looked at his comrade who had not yet died, slowly crouched down, and used his bayonet to end his comrade's life.
