Chapter 67: Orders from the Higher-Ups
Fourth Defense Zone Inner City.
A soldier standing on the towering wall of the Inner City looked at the tragic scene outside and said in a low tone, "The residents in the Outer City must be almost wiped out by those Orcs, right? Are they going to start attacking the Inner City next?"
The soldier standing next to him, seeing his comrade's worried expression, patted his shoulder and said, "Don't worry, the higher-ups have already sent a distress signal to the Sixth Defense Zone and the Ninth Defense Zone; that is something for them to worry about."
The soldier fell into Silence; he could not defy the decision of the higher-ups. At least the higher-ups were still trying to request aid from the other two defense zones. As long as the other two defense zones sent reinforcements, the Fourth Defense Zone could be held.
"If this continues, there might not be many residents left in the Outer City."
"What does that have to do with us? Surviving in this shitty era, living one day is one day. We are not saviors; no one cares about our lives. Those higher-ups only get anxious and look for solutions when their own interests are in danger. At least we can be glad we are still in the Inner City and don't have to be like those people in the Outer City, cooked as livestock by the Orcs or kept in captivity." This soldier tried to persuade his comrade, which also served as a bit of comfort for his own inner anxiety.
"Does no one really care about people like us?"
Just in the spare time of their conversation, people were dying in the Outer City every minute and every second; despair was spreading throughout the entire Outer City.
In the Fourth Defense Zone Meeting Room, the original nine-member council was now reduced to five, having learned that the Ninth Defense Zone would send the most professional reinforcements to help them overcome the difficulties.
"They want us to hold on for another week? What is going on? It takes at most 18 hours for the Ninth Defense Zone to reach us, so why do they want us to wait another week?" A man in military uniform spoke up, but it was obvious he was attending this kind of meeting for the first time; the previous one had already sacrificed himself in the battle against the Orcs, which was why he was temporarily filling in.
"Because they are currently engaged in battle with the Orcs and will likely need a few days to handle it," the reporting officer below the platform said.
"That is fine; at least the Ninth Defense Zone is willing to help us. The Sixth Defense Zone has not responded to our messages to this day. By comparison, the Ninth Defense Zone is actually quite decent," a man with a kind appearance said.
"The most important thing for us now is to consolidate the Inner City defenses and hold out until the reinforcements arrive," a man with a round face and short hair sitting in the middle of the meeting table said.
"Agreed..."
The others could not offer any better suggestions at the moment, and everyone agreed.
Inside the Thirteenth Legion Camp of the Ninth Defense Zone.
"Damn it, looking at you lot, you wouldn't survive a minute back home!"
"You would only end up as food there. Damn it, you are absolutely the worst batch of the legion I have ever led—uh, or maybe the second worst."
"At least you're a bit better than those guys from Scintilla. Damn, whenever I mention those guys, I just..."
Several Catachan Warriors stood in the center of the camp, their rough voices echoing through the camp; in front of them were the exhausted soldiers of the Thirteenth Regiment.
When these Catachan Muscle Men saw on the first day that the new recruits they were training did not submit to them, they laughed very happily; it was a good thing that these soldiers were defiant.
After some "friendly" persuasion, the soldiers of the Thirteenth Legion stood before these Catachan Warriors with bruised and swollen faces.
After spending these few days together, everyone discovered that although these muscle men were rough in appearance and a bit temperamental in speech, they treated them quite well.
"Huff... huff... Yingzhou's soldiers are so fierce, we look really pathetic. Huff... huff..."
"Ah, how did they train to become like that?"
The soldiers of the Thirteenth Legion lay on the ground in a heap; they wished they were the ones on patrol duty every day.
Meanwhile, in the Legion Commander's tent, Nie Hao, upon learning of the order for his Thirteenth Legion to push the front line forward, widened his eyes and said in disbelief, "How is this possible? Are those higher-ups pigs? Pushing the front line forward in this situation isn't that just gambling with the lives of everyone in the Thirteenth Legion?"
Hu Jie shrugged helplessly at Nie Hao and said, "Just as you said, although Chief Ji Bu has been trying his best to oppose this matter, you know how the higher-ups do things. The final vote decided that our Thirteenth Legion's front line will be pushed forward."
"Huff..." Nie Hao took a deep breath, suppressing his irritable mood, "Then what is the second piece of news you mentioned?"
"It is about Yingzhou. The Human Alliance higher-ups have decided to let Yingzhou's squad go as reinforcements from the Ninth Defense Zone to support the Fourth Defense Zone. Someone should come to find him in a few days," Hu Jie said with a solemn expression.
"Damn it, they send a combat squad as reinforcements, and it's one that was just formed not long ago! Are they idiots? I am really... the Fourth Defense Zone is already in such a state, what the hell are they saving!" Nie Hao cursed loudly as soon as he heard the second piece of news.
Hu Jie did not stop him, because he had already anticipated this situation; with Nie Hao's personality, he would definitely "bless" everyone connected to the higher-ups.
A moment later, Nie Hao, with a dry throat, took a sip of water and sat in his chair, muttering to himself.
"The higher-ups are idiots; if this continues, the Ninth Defense Zone will sooner or later become the territory of the Alien Race."
"It is better to say less of such things in the future, otherwise it is easy for people to find leverage against you," Hu Jie reminded him from the side.
"Damn it, notify the brothers of the Thirteenth Regiment, prepare to push the front line tomorrow. Yingzhou... follow the regiment first, and we will see when the people from the Military District arrive!" Nie Hao paused for a moment and finally issued the Task.
"I will go notify them right away."
After Yingzhou recalled the several Catachan Warriors, he saw Hu Jie walk into the camp and head toward the group.
"We have received instructions from the Military District that our Thirteenth Legion's front line is to be pushed toward the Beast Race. Everyone, get a good rest tonight; we start pushing the front line tomorrow," Hu Jie said slowly after arriving in front of the group.
"Push the front line?"
"We finally managed to block the Orcs in this jungle; what are the people above thinking? Do they think it is easy for us to fight the Orcs?"
Hu Jie's order caused the soldiers to start discussing, but soon, these voices stopped.
"Did the Legion Commander agree to this too?" Gu En stood up and asked Hu Jie.
"Yes, he agreed. This order was also issued by him," Hu Jie nodded and replied.
Seeing that this was an order issued by the Legion Commander, the soldiers stopped discussing and replied in unison, "Yes!"
"Yingzhou, there is news for you here as well. Come out and I will tell you."
After Hu Jie finished speaking, he left the camp.
