Chapter 1481: Twilight Event (Part 3)

~12 min read 2,273 words

"John Constantine..."

Cain's tone when speaking English was extremely peculiar; every word radiated a strange vibration, the voice sounding as if it came from an incredibly distant space, each sentence carrying an echo difficult for ordinary people to comprehend.

He paced around Constantine, his face—so handsome that one glance was enough to make a person fall—submerged in shadow, and Cain continued.

"You followed in the footsteps of Saint William to find my tomb, taking the holy blood from my remaining pool of blood; this is a grace that even my most devout believers do not possess."

"So, how do you want me to repay your grace? By sleeping with you?"

Cain's expression flickered with slight surprise, but he quickly returned to normal. With his back to Constantine, he turned his head slightly to look at him and said, "Tell me, what has become of the magical world now?"

"The magical world? There is no magical world anymore." Constantine said in a mocking tone, "You returned at a convenient time. The demons finally couldn't help but harvest their believers. They collectively broke their contracts and reclaimed the power they had lent to the mages. If you want to rule the world, now is the time."

"No, I am not that foolish. I know my great enemy is not the demons, but the angels; they have never given up the thought of annihilating me." Cain continued in that strange tone.

"You want me to help you deal with the Church?" Constantine sneered and said, "You don't really think my reputation is any better than yours, do you? There are forty-six cathedrals in England, and I can't enter a single one; I'd get a beating just for appearing at the door."

"That is because you owe the angels too much, while they owe me."

"Let's not talk about old debts; let's talk business." Constantine sat cross-legged on the ground, curling his lip indifferently.

The next second, he was grabbed by a pair of bloody hands. The Blood Queen Mary reached out toward him, pressing him against the wall with claws condensed from magic, choking his neck tightly.

Constantine struggled instinctively. Mary floated before him and said, "Listen well to what the Master says, you damned stray dog!"

"Put him down, Mary." Cain revealed a smile, staring into Constantine's eyes, and said, "He is as pure as a newborn infant right now. I have never seen such a pure, sinless soul in any human being."

Constantine was released. He lay on the ground, coughing twice while clutching his chest, and climbed up with some difficulty, his back pressed against the wall because Cain had already walked up to him.

"Your act of invading my tomb for no reason did indeed anger me. Just as I was tracking your location by the scent of blood, I discovered the anomaly in your soul—that pure aura awakened my craving for blood, which I had long since discarded like filth, the dirty and unclean blood of ordinary humans."

"You want to drink my blood?"

Constantine revealed a slightly crazed smile. He opened his arms, tilted his neck to one side, and said, "Come, Your Excellency Cain."

"You are quite sensible." Cain grabbed Constantine's chin with one hand, forcing him to look at him, and stared into Constantine's eyes with those crimson blood-eyes filled with mysterious patterns.

"Adam and Eve respectively governed the day and night of the Garden of Eden, and when Abel's pure blood flows before me, my descendants and I shall forever possess the blood-red twilight of Eden, from then on able to drink our fill of purity and transform it into great power."

Cain's voice grew closer. When his fangs pressed against Constantine's neck, he heard Constantine whisper in his ear, "Kill me, and I shall return to the side of my Lord, to enjoy purity forever... Urgh!"

Sharp fangs pierced Constantine's neck. Accompanied by the outflow of blood, Cain's voice became clearer.

"God will not save you, sinner; He will only banish you, to fall forever into the punishment of sin and fire. But I admire your piety, for it will make your death all the sweeter."

As his blood drained away, Constantine's eyes gradually lost their luster. Cain revealed an appreciative smile, but the smile on Constantine's face was even more malicious than his.

The hand pressing against the wall dropped powerlessly. In the second before Constantine lost his final spark of life, his voice echoed in the dim room.

"You will eventually know, wicked one, that even the wicked have a Savior..."

"He is dead." Lilith's voice sounded in Red Robin's mind, and then her tone carried some curiosity: "Are you just going to watch like this? Boy?"

"Something is not right." Red Robin frowned and said, "Anyone who thinks Constantine is easy to deal with will meet a terrible fate."

"I know a little about the Justice League Dark—there is no one in this world Constantine dares not use. He is most skilled at using others' emotions to drive them to do things for him, including enemies and friends, or rather, he is even better at using friends."

"Do you think he has a plan? Then what did those words he said before he died mean?" Lilith asked as if chatting idly.

"Constantine doesn't believe in God." Red Robin shook his head and said, "I believe that if there were a chance, he would even screw God over."

Then he frowned and repeated the last sentence Constantine said: "'The wicked have a Savior for the wicked'... I guess he might be trying to use the person who will come to save him."

"Constantine once told Jim that a friend of his paid off his debts and saved him. Since this friend is willing to pay such a high price, it is impossible for them to watch him die again."

Red Robin suddenly looked up and said, "Constantine is betting that he will save him, will avenge him, will... kill Cain for him."

In Hell, within Azazel's palace, Schiller was sitting face-to-face with Azazel at the long table of Hell, drinking and chatting, while Red Hood sat in the seat beside them reading a book.

"Your strategy is very effective." Azazel's tone hid pleasure. He took a sip of wine that looked like blood and continued, "All the demons who lent power broke their contracts at the same time, and the magical world is in a mess. Our years of painstaking management were not in vain; that group of foolish mages could no longer live without our power."

Suddenly, the black mist around Azazel dissipated, but what appeared within was not the demon image with horns on its head common in Hell, nor was it like the animal-like incarnations of Belial and Beelzebub. Azazel was a standard humanoid, with golden hair and blue eyes, a handsome face, and a pair of huge black wings behind him.

"Seraph Azazel—Guardian of Heaven, the scapegoat who suffers for the Lord." Schiller looked at Azazel with a smile and said.

"That is all ancient history." Azazel said coldly.

Just as Schiller was about to say something, Azazel saw his expression change. Subsequently, the smile on Schiller's face vanished, replaced by an expression of slight surprise.

"... Audacious." Schiller whispered with a sigh. Azazel did not know who he was evaluating.

Schiller stood up from his seat and turned to look out the window of the demon palace. Suddenly, two entangled souls flew from outside the window to Schiller's side. A flash of light appeared in Schiller's eyes, and the souls turned into pure white specks of light in his hands.

Azazel's six huge wings spread out with a 'whoosh'. He soared into the air, flying to the space above the throne. He glared at Schiller and roared.

"You are an angel?! You lied to me!

!"

"Constantine..." Schiller recited the name of the soul. He took a deep breath, seemingly in disbelief.

Azazel in mid-air also fell silent. A few seconds later, he folded his wings and landed on the ground, looking at the specks of light in Schiller's hands with some surprise, and asked:

"You became Constantine's Master? How did you do it? This cunning human once played the entire Hell!"

"This is my private matter, Your Majesty Azazel."

When Schiller looked at Azazel, Azazel cursed in a low voice: "Where did Lucifer find another fallen angel?!"

"How exactly did you get Constantine's soul?" Azazel asked again.

"Heaven and Hell could not get his soul because you didn't truly want to save him. I suffered for him, so I became his Master."

"I am indeed an angel, and after one of his audacious offenses, another version of me signed a contract with him... I have some private matters to attend to, Your Majesty Azazel, so I will take my leave."

Azazel snorted coldly, but before Schiller left the throne hall, he said: "Beware of Gabriel. He once made a great vow to judge all the fallen. Although foolish, he is very annoying."

Schiller's footsteps paused, but he still said: "Thank you for your reminder, Your Majesty."

Inside the Forgotten Bookstore, Red Hood covered his head and woke up groggily. He found himself slumped on the table, with an empty wine glass in front of him.

"Is this a dream?" Red Hood asked in a hoarse voice.

Suddenly, he saw a hand holding a cup of hot water placed in front of him. Red Hood looked up and met a pair of desolate gray eyes. He broke into a cold sweat almost immediately.

"Drink it." Schiller's tone was very gentle. He looked at Red Hood and said, "You will probably have to study on your own for a while, because I have to occupy this body to handle some private matters."

Red Hood picked up the wine glass with slightly trembling fingertips and took a mechanical sip of water. He looked at Schiller's slightly unfocused eyes and couldn't look away, but he still put down the wine glass and said: "You... are not that Professor?"

"You can understand it that way." Schiller smiled and said.

After finishing, he wanted to turn and go upstairs. Red Hood stood up and called him back, asking: "What are you going to do?"

Schiller's hand pressed on the buttons of his suit. He lowered his eyelids and said: "Someone killed my lamb, and I have to go retrieve his blood."

"Can I go with you?" Red Hood took a deep breath and continued: "My lesson isn't finished yet."

"I'm afraid this is not something you want to learn."

"But I can watch."

"If you don't get squeamish at the sight of blood, then come along. But for now, wait for me here; I'm going to change my clothes."

Red Hood stood beside the stairs. He watched Schiller walk into the bedroom door. Not long after, he changed into a dark red Prince of Wales check three-piece suit, walking down the stairs while buttoning his suit jacket.

Red Hood had already walked to the door. He turned his head to look at Schiller and asked: "Where are we going?"

But Schiller shook his head. He walked to the table by the window and sat down again, then pointed to the seat opposite and said: "Sit down, we have to go to Hell again."

Red Hood felt a bit confused, but he did as he was told. Soon, the two figures appeared in Azazel's palace again. Azazel frowned and stared at Schiller who had appeared again.

"Why do you seem not to be..."

"Your Majesty Azazel." Schiller raised his tone to interrupt him, then continued: "Let's make a fair trade. You tell me where the person who killed John Constantine is, and I will give you a reward."

Azazel revealed an intrigued expression and said: "I don't think you have a reward that would satisfy me..."

"The reward is Constantine."

Schiller walked to Azazel unhurriedly. When he met those desolate gray eyes, Azazel was the first to look away.

Schiller's hands opened again. He stared at the soul specks emitting strong waves of fear with those slightly unfocused gray eyes, and with his other hand, he pulled one of them out from the entangled twin specks and sent it before Azazel.

"You, all the demon kings, the Constantine that the entire Hell and Heaven desire most—this human who played you all—will fall into your hands."

Azazel listened to the miserable wailing emitted by Constantine's soul specks, then looked at Schiller's desolate gray eyes. He suppressed his urge, took a slight half-step back, and said indifferently: "Everyone has their own Savior; he is your lamb."

"Yes." Schiller lowered his eyelids again. His expression held no anger, only a slightly mocking helplessness. He looked at the soul specks wailing and begging in his palm and said.

"But just as he played you all countless times, this self-righteous little lamb wanted to use me."

"I will go retrieve his blood, because that is something that belongs to me. But I hope that you and all the demons in Hell who hate him will teach him a lesson that satisfies me. As long as the soul is intact, Hell should do its best to treat him... This is the price of purity."

Azazel gave Schiller a meaningful look, turned, and walked back to the throne. He sat down on the throne, his hands resting on the armrests, listening to the wailing coming from the soul specks.

"No, no... Schiller!

No!

!

!"

Azazel's incredibly excited voice echoed in the palace.

"Trade completed, Cain... killed your lamb." ===== CHAPTER 1482 =====
