Chapter 2: I Became Batman's Teacher

~9 min read 1,690 words

Cat Getan City, a morning that wasn't exactly bright but was still somewhat warm. Shiler put down his coffee cup and heard the sound of his colleague Anna's high heels. Before long, a blonde American sweetheart walked in with a dark face and said, "The lazy bums at the freshman registration office took leave. You go fill in for the day."

Shiler said, "I'm going now. This coffee is on you."

"You'll never get a chance to hit on me!" Anna roared. Shiler happily took his coffee and walked out of the cafe. He glanced at Cat Getan City's perpetually overcast sky and began his fifth day since arriving here.

In his previous life, Shiler was a psychologist. After a plane crash, he was thrown into this damnably simple-minded city. Fortunately, he was neither a hero nor a villain, but rather a relaxed and stable university teacher—and in his old profession, too: a psychology professor.

Shiler was just happy that he could slack off for another day when the system in his mind went "Ding-dong," displaying: "Peter Parker has sent a chat request."

Shiler replied in his mind while walking toward the registration office: "What's wrong, Peter?"

"Hey! I'm going to intern at Oscorp tomorrow! You don't know how rare this opportunity is for me! And Gwen... I mean, she's going too. We're going together, it's just great! We can discuss the genome helix, those amazing big machines together..."

Shiler silently said to himself, no girl wants to discuss those things with you, little Spidey, wake up.

Since arriving here, Shiler had obtained a "Marvel Chat System." The first person he unlocked was little Spidey, Peter Parker. This chatterbox had been rambling to him for four and a half days about his teenage inner journey—how he liked Gwen, wanted to pursue her, but was too afraid.

Shiler encouraged Peter while walking to the registration office. He sat down to organize the forms, waiting for this year's freshmen to register.

But it was strange; Shiler had been here for so many days and hadn't seen the Bat-Signal light up, nor had any villains come to cause trouble. Life was so peaceful it felt like the city really was simple-minded.

Soon, students came to register one after another, holding piles of materials, and all Shiler had to do was register their names and dorm rooms.

"Next!" Shiler shouted without lifting his head. A whole line had already formed in front of him. A boy sat down, and Shiler asked, "Name?"

"Bruce Wei En."

"Bruce... Men's Dorm Building 2, Room 306..." Shiler wrote it down to himself, then suddenly his pen paused. He looked up calmly to size the boy up. He had blue eyes and black hair, very handsome. Shiler said, "Wei En?"

"Indeed, I am Wei En."

Shiler repeated, "Men's Dorm Building 2, Room 306. Didn't hear me? Take the form and get going quickly, the people behind are all waiting for you."

Now it was Bruce's turn to be stunned. He picked up the form and asked, "Which department are you a professor in?"

"Psychology. Don't take my class, kid," Shiler said.

Bruce was intrigued by him, but Shiler felt very helpless. So Batman had only just started college! That explained why there was no Bat-Signal!

Why was he so unlucky? Batman started college just as he transmigrated into a university teacher!

Shiler had a fairly sufficient understanding of the danger level of the Batman series of stories, especially this 18-year-old brat Bruce, an obnoxious playboy!

Bruce didn't say anything; he picked up the form, thanked him, and left. Shiler finished the freshman registration work and was just planning to go back to the professor's apartment to sleep when he suddenly remembered he had left his keys in the office. As he went up the office stairs, he ran into a thin, tall professor. Shiler said, "Hi, Tier, are you here to pick up something too?"

"Yes. Did you leave your keys in the office again?"

"Oh, that's right. Anna was rushing me too much today, I forgot when I left. I'll be down immediately after I get them. See you tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow."

Just as Shiler and Tier passed each other, a cold chill crawled up his spine. Tier... Professor Tier!

The supervillain Scarecrow!

Tier, with his back to Shiler, didn't see Shiler turn his head to stare fixedly at him. If he hadn't learned today that Batman had just started college, he wouldn't have remembered. Memories related to Scarecrow appeared in his mind—Cat Getan University psychology professor, Ph. D. in psychology and chemistry, the future Scarecrow who would slaughter people using fear gas, Professor Tier!

Shiler took a deep breath and continued upstairs with his pace unchanged. The current Tier wasn't Scarecrow yet, because Bruce was only 18, hadn't graduated from college, and thus hadn't become Batman yet. Tier wasn't the world-famous psychologist yet either; he was only somewhat famous within the academic scope of "emotional psychology." Shiler was even more famous than him now...

Shiler was currently a world-class master of criminal psychology and abnormal psychology, a famous psychological researcher, and Cat Getan's most famous psychology professor.

That was why Tier's attitude just now was quite good... But what use was that! Shiler couldn't develop fear gas! He was a pure liberal arts student, while Tier was still a Ph. D. in chemistry!

Sure enough, if you master math, physics, and chemistry, you can travel the world without fear...

Shiler knew very well that the big stage of Cat Getan City, the bloody curtain, was about to be pulled open. And now he was just a scholar with no power to truss a chicken, a weakling who struggled to move a chair, a pure knowledge-based talent. Let alone encountering these famous supervillains, even the background characters in the comics, those thugs, could kill him with a gun!

And his worry became reality. The next morning, Shiler, who went to the school psychology clinic to sit and slack off as usual, had just brewed coffee when he heard a crisp knock on the door.

"Professor Shiler, may I come in?"

Shiler took a deep breath. Does this crappy psychology clinic really have students coming? I came here purely to slack off, okay? Do you understand paid vacation?

Outside the door was Bruce Wei En!

Shiler could only grit his teeth and say, "Please sit, student. What psychological problem do you have to consult about?"

"Can't I come to chat if there's no problem?" Wei En spread his hands, his playboy demeanor fully revealed.

Shiler pushed up his glasses and said, "This is a place for students to have psychological consultations. If you don't have a problem to consult about, then you can leave."

Shiler swore that his tone for these words was already more perfunctory and dry than an airplane broadcast, but Bruce still asked with interest, "Fine, then I'll ask one question. What do you think is the meaning of life?"

Shiler took a deep breath and opened the Marvel Chat System in his mind. He remembered that because he had previously guided Peter Parker's emotional problems, he had obtained a random chat opportunity. He hurriedly wrote in his mind:

"A brat whose parents are both dead, who has sworn to take revenge on all criminals, yet disguises himself with a playboy exterior, is now asking me what the meaning of life is. I want him to stop bothering me in the future. How should I answer him? Waiting online, quite urgent."

Soon, a reply appeared: "I am a teacher. Regarding your question, I think you should maintain sufficient patience and provide psychological counseling to this unfortunate child from two aspects..."

Shiler looked at the name in the dialogue box: Charles Xavier! Professor X!

No wonder, the founder and headmaster of the X-Mansion, sure enough, it was his old profession.

But Shiler, who noticed the avatar, discovered that Charles's avatar could be clicked. He clicked on Charles's avatar in his mind, and a dialogue box popped up: "First chat allows random copying of one ability (low-level) from the chat target. Do you want to copy?"

Shiler clicked "Yes" without knowing why.

"Telepathy (low-level) loaded."

Shiler felt a blur before his eyes, and suddenly countless noises came, countless strange emotions rushed into his mind, leaving him unable to distinguish them. After adapting for a good while, Shiler discovered that he had indeed obtained a part of Professor X's ability.

Telepathy was Charles's signature skill, and with a Cerebro, he could even brainwash all of humanity, but what Shiler obtained was only an extremely weakened version. He could only vaguely feel the other person's emotions and some thoughts that suddenly flashed through their mind, unable to read minds clearly and directly.

But this was enough. Shiler focused his attention on Bruce and discovered that his emotions were very chaotic now. Yes, it wasn't as cynical as he appeared.

According to Batman's life experience, he should have just returned from traveling the world and learning. Entering college should just be for Bruce's identity disguise. The real Batman already hated this boring daily life to the extreme, and every drop of his blood was screaming "revenge," "revenge on those criminals."

In Bruce's eyes, the professor opposite him seemed to have suddenly fallen into a kind of quiet thinking. Shiler had a pair of slightly special gray eyes. When Bruce was stared at by these eyes, his keen intuition began to sound an alarm—he seemed to be being spied on and seen through.

Then, Shiler said, "Perhaps you have been waiting for someone to give you this answer, a definite answer. If you have more things to do after getting this answer, don't come to bother me again, then I am willing to give you this answer."

"Oh? What is it?"

"Revenge," Shiler said, staring into Bruce's eyes. Under Bruce's suddenly gloomy expression, he stared straight at him and repeated, "The meaning of life is revenge."

Without caring about Bruce's expression, which was now as gloomy as the Cat Getan sky, Shiler said, "Are you satisfied, Mr. Wei En?" ===== CHAPTER 3 =====
