Chapter 2207: Autumn Arrives Late in the Golden City (Part 7)

~10 min read 1,944 words

The morning at Wei En Manor was as quiet and peaceful as ever.

Crack, crack, crack.

"Miss Aisha, please don't bite the garden fence while I'm watering. It will wet the hair you just groomed."

"Alfred, my father had someone send over some Arctic sweet shrimp that just came off the dock. Which shelf of the freezer should I put them on?"

"Don't put them away yet, let me eat two first."

"Hey! Jason, you can't eat ice-cold things early in the morning!"

"No, I'm not eating, I'm going to the garden to see Alfred."

"Master Dick, please take Miss Aisha away and help her wipe her hair. If you can't find a hair tie, let Harley look in the second drawer of Miss Selina's vanity."

"Forget it, she's definitely not in her room. I saw her sneaking over the balcony last night. I bet the two of them are sleeping soundly."

"You actually have the nerve to talk about them, Harley Quinn. You slid down from the roof last night, why did you land on my bedroom balcony? You scared me to death!"

"I was giving you a surprise. I prepared a gift for you to celebrate the victory of the ball game. If you don't want it, forget it."

"What good gift could you prepare? Don't tell me it's another scare box?"

"Heh, do you know that a craft market and a fabric market have opened on Green Street? And there's a food street! I have twelve shops invested in there, four of which are under renovation. I plan to give you one. If you don't want it, I'll contact the renovation team."

"What? You actually opened a shop there?"

"Is it that most popular mansion market? Are you serious? The rent there is expensive as hell, where did you get the money?"

"You forgot she's a rich woman? The whole street where you take cello lessons is hers."

"God, so we're going to have a shop? How are we going to open it? What should we sell?"

Ding-dong! Ding-dong!

The chattering children stopped in unison, looking at the manor gate with some doubt.

"Alfred, is there a scheduled visit?!" Jason stretched his neck and shouted toward the garden behind.

"No, there isn't. Gentlemen, don't get close to the gate yet, I'll go take a look."

Alfred maintained his consistent vigilance, asking the children to stay away from the door. He hadn't received any visit appointments, and James and Mayor Roy, who always had urgent matters, usually wouldn't come so early.

After opening the door, Alfred was very surprised because Schiller was standing outside.

"Good morning, Professor," Alfred didn't blame Schiller for not having an appointment, because this professor usually valued appointments more than anyone else and would never visit suddenly. If he hadn't done so, it meant the matter must be very urgent.

"Is Mr. Wei En still sleeping? Do you need me to wake him up?" Alfred closed the door and asked. The children were also unbelievably quiet. They obviously thought of the same thing as Alfred: was there another murder case? Or did something unexpected happen at the music festival? They began to feel nervous.

But Schiller just sighed and said, "Alfred, don't you really consider replacing the Wei En Manor's wired phone with a more sensitive satellite signal phone?"

Alfred was stunned. He turned to look at the old phone that had always been placed in the living room. He looked at Schiller again. Schiller shook his head and said, "I made about three calls yesterday, in the morning, at noon, and in the evening, but none of them got through, so I had to visit rashly."

"My goodness," Alfred sighed, then immediately went to check the phone line. The children followed him noisily, turning their heads to look at Schiller as they walked forward.

"Could the phone line have been bitten by Aisha?" Dick scratched his head and said, "I saw her playing under the big tree yesterday."

"I didn't," Aisha could speak. She retorted, "I was catching earthworms. Who can't tell the difference between an earthworm and a phone line?"

"Perhaps it's your teeth. I think it wasn't controlled by your brain, at least not very well."

Dick usually wasn't this poisonous, and they all knew that, but yesterday when they were sunbathing by the garden pond, Dick's chair collapsed, and there was a tooth mark from Aisha on one of the legs—this thing was almost becoming a symbol of Wei En Manor, with few pieces of furniture without it.

"That was really too old," Aisha sighed. "Although I might have bitten it, the collapse definitely wasn't entirely my fault."

They followed Alfred all the way to the garden to check the buried phone line. There were few buildings in the manor area, and they weren't dense, so there were usually no spare phone lines. When Alfred saw a piece of scorched earth, he knew it had been struck by lightning again.

He looked up at the lightning rod again, only to find that the lightning rod on the roof had long since fallen. Everyone's eyes fell on Harley. Harley shook her head and pointed to the roof, saying, "I came down from that side, it's impossible to have touched the lightning rod."

The children brought a ladder and climbed onto the roof. Finally, Jason found a sparrow feather next to the collapsed and damaged lightning rod.

"I don't know how big a scarecrow we need to drive this thing away," Jason said, holding the feather in one hand and the ladder in the other, finally jumping down in two steps.

Everyone gathered around, including Schiller and Alfred, and then Schiller found that the feather in Jason's hand was almost longer than his arm.

"I'm really sorry, Professor, I failed to discover this series of accidents in time. Not answering the phone was definitely not my intention."

Schiller stood at the entrance of the porch, looked around, and said, "In fact, has Bruce told you about his plan to expand and renovate Wei En Manor?"

Alfred paused and said, "Yes, everyone who comes here compliments the decoration style, but if they stay for a night, they will find that it is actually just gold and jade on the outside."

"This manor is already too old. Although it experienced an initial relocation, it can still be called one of the earliest buildings in Cat Getan, and the buildings built at the same time that have been well-preserved to this day are probably only Cat Getan Cathedral."

"Thanks to Wei En's funding for the renovation of the cathedral."

"Yes, Daniel told me it absolutely depends on this. Strong sunlight is a great test for the outer walls of Cat Getan's buildings. If it weren't for that previous renovation, we would probably see the terrifying scene of angels peeling."

"Are we going to repair the house?" Tim raised a hand and said, "Should have done this long ago. In fact, after I accidentally said that my wardrobe door would creak, my mother worries every day that I will be crushed by it."

Dick also had something to say. He shook his head pretentiously and said, "Although there are many strange things happening to me, the strangest thing recently is that the cover of my homework book always sticks to the table. Later I found that the primer of the solid wood table has begun to peel off."

"What do you think of this, Alfred?" Schiller asked.

Alfred pondered for a moment and replied, "Perhaps appropriate repairs are necessary, but what makes me uncertain is the expansion part. We have no more land."

Alfred's words naturally had a metaphor. Now the South District where Wei En Manor is located is an extremely mature wealthy area, and there is no land available for expansion anywhere.

The renovation of the manor is also a big trouble. Most of the things here are protected by cultural relic protection laws, especially an entire house, which means they can only make minor adjustments, such as replacing internal furniture and walls, but the outer walls and structure cannot be moved.

But the biggest problem with Wei En Manor is that the structure of the house is not reasonable enough. If the building layout cannot be adjusted, I am afraid it will eventually return to its original appearance.

So instead of spending great energy on re-repairing and transforming, it is better to buy a new manor directly, so they can have newer, larger, and more convenient facilities.

"I think the existing manors in Cat Getan are not enough to meet the needs of the Wei En family." Alfred took a breath, and the cold air of the autumn morning entered his lungs, making him sigh comfortably, and said, "We looked at the villa assessment map, but didn't find any manor that met the requirements of the Wei En family."

"Of course, we need a lot of things because we have many family members," Alfred said, without any distress, only pride that couldn't be more, "Master and Madam, I mean Thomas and Martha, they always have to come back to live. The living of the master and mistress cannot be sloppy."

"Of course there are Bruce and Selina, which is even more critical, deciding whether Master Bruce can show his love nest to Selina. Honestly, I don't think this house is decent enough in front of Miss Selina."

"It is too old-fashioned and conservative, and it is very likely to make this lady think that the Wei En family is rigid, harsh, and inflexible. This is not a good impression."

"How about buying a piece of land?" Schiller suggested. He said, "The area is large enough, the scenery is good enough, and then pull the engineering team of the Cat Getan reconstruction project over. They have accumulated rich experience, and presumably they can build a manor that is satisfactory enough."

Alfred nodded, obviously agreeing with Schiller's proposal. Schiller pondered for a moment, then continued, "Alfred, I have no offense, this is also your freedom, but how long have you not taken a vacation?"

"I don't need this," Alfred shook his head and said, "I never thought those good days would come back. Now I have so many children, I must take good care of each of them."

"But they also make you feel nervous and exhausted. Taking care of children is not an easy job. Their ages and families are all different, and the difficulty is unimaginable."

"Yes, sometimes it's a bit chaotic. In fact, I should have discovered the phone line broken by lightning long ago, but I have a lot of things to deal with, arranging for the engineering team to come in, installing water slides, cleaning the swimming pool for the children to play, cleaning the sandbox, washing swimwear, until this morning I had time to water the plants."

"Perhaps you can introduce a professional enough butler team to your master, which can greatly improve efficiency, and you will have more time to stay with the children."

As a result, Schiller heard Alfred sigh, "If there were any, wouldn't I hire them? Professor Schiller, you should understand best that all the graduates in the past 20 years are like your butler Merkel."

Schiller stopped talking.

"By the way, Professor, what are you here for?"

"My butler Merkel thinks the music festival is interesting, but I don't intend to participate, so I plan to give him a vacation for a period of time. He said this requires the consent of the referrer."

Schiller and Alfred looked at each other and sighed together. ===== CHAPTER 2208 =====
