Chapter 2219: Late Autumn in the Golden City (Part 19)

~10 min read 1,959 words

Shiler has always believed that humans are born with the ability to manipulate mentally; this is a human instinct.

When a person is still a baby, he will remind his parents to take care of him through crying. This is the most primitive manipulation, but usually, both sides are completely unaware.

A type of child with failed education will also show similar tendencies, using crying to threaten parents to satisfy their desires when they are at an age where they can still cry, and using tantrums to threaten colleagues and friends when they are at an age where they cannot cry, also to make them satisfy themselves. This is the lowest level of manipulation, and usually, both sides are completely unaware.

But if one looks for the common points between the two, it is easy to find that the intense emotions displayed by these manipulators can bring pain-like reactions to other humans. People must find ways to stop this pain, and if the person in a strong position doesn't have the determination to stop the pain, it will become satisfying his needs.

Emotions are of course the key to manipulation, but there is actually a very significant difference between normal venting of emotions and using emotions to manipulate others. Shiler once published 2-3 monographs to argue the connection and difference between the two.

Among them, the one most easily used by ordinary people to distinguish is that in the vast majority of cases, venting emotions doesn't have a very obvious directionality. People who fall into intense emotions have blank brains, crying uncontrollably, angry and incoherent, laughing as if they are going to stop breathing.

The areas of the human brain are limited. When some intense emotion bursts out, the rational part will be compressed to the minimum. They usually cannot coexist.

But if a person's emotions have a very obvious directionality, especially with "if you do this, I will stop," or "if it weren't for you, how would I cry," this kind of directionality is a kind of mental manipulation.

Human emotions are instincts. The reason why they burst out is that they are not completely controlled by human reason. If he can let it burst out at will and stop at will, then this is not a real emotion, but just a disguise.

When emotions burst out, people can only feel simple emotions, not the source behind the emotions. If the brain still has a large part thinking about the source behind the emotions, it means he also has enough brain areas to curb this emotion.

And if he didn't do so, it means he wanted to achieve his goal through this emotion, which is not venting, but manipulation.

Accepting the intense emotions of others is a very painful thing. People, under the condition that empathy organs work normally, will always be unconsciously infected by emotions. The more intense it is, the more energy is needed, and it is not that reason requires ignoring it and it can really be done.

Empathy is a curse that humans carry from birth, not controlled by any reason.

Then showing intense emotions can be regarded as a punishment means. If you don't satisfy me, I will stuff a lot of things into your empathy organs until you become incomparably painful.

Parents don't satisfy the requirements, the bear child cries endlessly. This kind of crying is obviously not because of sadness, but to punish the parents, so that the parents satisfy their various unreasonable requirements.

If this child happens not to encounter any tough superior in the growth process to make him understand that using emotions as a weapon is to pay a price, then he will rely on this means until adulthood.

Among them, the vast majority who are relatively stupid will be taught a lesson by the more cruel adult society, but among them, there are also some individuals with talent who don't need teachers to teach, and can also realize the truth, realizing that this invisible punishment means can manipulate others and bring themselves great convenience.

Then they will become real manipulators, and the methods are no longer low-level crying and making trouble, but in an unnoticeable way, instilling many emotions that people cannot accept into them, making them at a loss, panicked, and willing to pay any price to end this situation.

And the manipulated can only choose to satisfy the needs of the manipulator.

Of course, not everyone realizes that they are manipulating others. In the long years of growth, they have used this method countless times, constantly improving, integrating, until it becomes their instinct, becoming a part of their personality.

After the manipulation instinct is embedded in their personality, their every move, every word, and every action manipulate others every moment, becoming a veritable mental abuser.

They don't think they are perverts, because this has become their instinct. Manipulation is not their means, but themselves. They think they are such people. All emotions burst out to manipulate others are their real feelings. When fake is true, true is also fake.

This manipulation ability developed among the general public cannot be counted as how brilliant, but if supplemented by theoretical knowledge, plus some flashes of the manipulators themselves, they will become excellent manipulation masters.

Inferior manipulators only know how to whip others with emotions. This is punitive manipulation, while truly high-level manipulators usually have both rewards and punishments. They will wave the whip at the right time, but at the same time, they will package various eye-catching advantages on themselves into sweet candies, making people willing to swallow them even if they are painful.

And relative to manipulation is counter-manipulation. The best counter-manipulation is to manipulate others. Shiler wanted to explain this point to Bruce, and when Bruce dared to manipulate Shiler, it meant that he had completely gotten rid of Shiler's manipulation.

But many people, especially those who are relatively kind and have higher moral bottom lines, have an instinct that cannot sit idly by any life's pain, so naturally, they can't skillfully use their emotions to punish others.

Then either exercise to close their empathy organs, or at least weaken their ability to accept others' emotions a little, so they won't be easily punished by emotions.

Or they can only isolate physically, run away as soon as they feel something is wrong, but note that the standard for judging what is wrong is always their own feelings, and no matter how sensitive it is, it is not too much. As long as there is any discomfort, they absolutely cannot tolerate it. Otherwise, once the alarm is dulled, they cannot feel the source of danger but continue to be painful, they will definitely slide into the abyss of depression.

And between manipulation and counter-manipulation, there is a more niche proposition, which is induced manipulation.

There are many psychology monographs on mental abuse, and more psychology monographs on anti-mental abuse, but there should only be one psychology monograph on how to cultivate a mental abuser so far, which was published by Shiler.

Because this is a completely academic article, some insufficiently rigorous inferences and conjectures cannot be published on it, so Shiler's actual research results are much more than what is shown.

The theory still starts with infants.

Why do babies know that as long as they cry, adults will satisfy their needs?

Inferring from common sense, babies can only make sounds when they are uncomfortable because they can't speak, so they can only howl and cry. Sharp crying is actually just them venting their emotions.

But if the timeline is pushed forward a bit, how did humans or animals evolve the ability to howl?

Animals have the need for communication, but if extended to the initial vocalization and listening functions, it is probably not any complex communication, but just a simple warning.

Discovering danger, notifying companions, this is the initial function of all biological vocal organs, even if some creatures don't use sound, but sound waves or other similar things, their initial efficacy must be warning.

There is also a saying that the vocal range of women is higher than that of men, which is actually because once the tribe encounters danger, it needs tribe members who can use a higher vocal range to notify distant guards to participate in defense or evacuation. Babies are the same.

So in millions of years of evolution, the cries of women and babies will instinctively evoke people's vigilance. Some relatively sensitive people will feel very irritable when they hear similar sounds. This is a restlessness flowing in the blood since the primitive period, a kind of vigilance instinct that is evoked.

So the howling of babies is because of pain, but the fundamental reason for developing the howling function is to remind others while expressing pain.

And the reason why this function has been retained until today is that tribes that noticed warning sounds survived, while those that ignored warnings were destroyed by danger.

Babies who howl loudly enough will be taken care of in time by their parents, while those who are not sharp enough and don't cry will be easily ignored, so they cannot grow well.

The more they are good at using emotions to punish those who are good at waving whips, the more they will attract people's attention, and it will be easier to profit and succeed by manipulating others.

And conversely, howling might just be to express pain and warning at the beginning, but once someone responds, they will realize this is effective, and this instinct will be strengthened.

For manipulators, once they taste the sweetness from it, they will intensify, constantly trying intentionally or unintentionally, honing their skills, and even developing into a hobby, until they are addicted to it and completely rely on it.

The essence of cultivating manipulators lies in this, and induced manipulation is also carried out according to this theory. Once the manipulator sends a signal of manipulation, control their own emotional changes, show pain, and let them think their manipulation has succeeded.

An obvious benefit is that this will make them relax their vigilance, so once they encounter a difficult mental manipulator and have tried many methods but cannot get rid of them, induced manipulation will be the last weapon.

Because besides being able to make the other party relax their vigilance and facilitate escape, those who are bold can also try to continuously project energy by giving the other party strong positive feedback, until the other party's mental threshold is pulled to a level that cannot be without you, becoming a mental addict.

After this, leave, and the other party will either become incomparably empty and painful, and be a good man again eighteen years later, or want to go further on others, and finally get an iron rice bowl that starts in three years.

Shiler knows that Lex must have a talent for mental manipulation. I am afraid that he doesn't need his cultivation to be able to use this technique freely, and what is more valuable is that it almost doesn't affect himself. It is a weapon, not a bone.

But Shiler needs to determine what level Lex is at, so he needs to carry out some induction to see Lex's manipulation level.

There is no difficulty in terms of technology. As the saying goes, don't use your hobby to challenge others' profession, and don't use your profession to challenge others' life. For Shiler, performing emotions is his life.

But the only problem is that Shiler hasn't signed Lex's completion file yet. He is still his professor. Any control and abuse of students' mental aspects are contrary to teacher ethics. Arrogance has its bottom line in this regard.

But pathology doesn't. ===== CHAPTER 2220 =====
