Chapter 2220: Late Autumn in the Golden City (Part 20)
Shiler withdrew his gaze from Lex.
But Lex felt that the air in the room suddenly became heavy.
This was a very bad omen. Lex suddenly realized what he was doing just now. He tried to put on a hurt posture towards Shiler's rejection, in the hope that Shiler would feel guilty and thus waver.
God, what on earth was he doing? Trying to influence a psychology expert psychologically?
Then he instantly sobered up. This shouldn't be a stupid decision made by parasites invading his brain because he ate too much salmon, so he looked at Shiler with suspicion.
"I am thinking about a problem, Mr. Luthor," Shiler didn't look at him, but stared at the plate in front of him and said, "It is also a problem I have been thinking about since you made the request to me. Why 'Godfather'?"
"My father was a devout Catholic..."
"You hope I will atone for the act of killing him?"
Lex's hair stood on end instantly.
He didn't know how to describe this feeling in an instant. In short, if he didn't finish the second half of the sentence, or Shiler didn't want to hear him finish, the main course for the next meal wouldn't be salmon.
"I mean, when he was still alive, I once heard him say that I couldn't have a godfather, otherwise someone would notice my abnormality. For this, he even killed two priests."
The air loosened a bit.
When Lex's shoulders dropped, the whole person was like being fished out of the water.
No, he is not a professor. After Lex's reason slightly recovered, he realized that the situation had completely changed. He was now standing between the two rows of teeth of a lion, and he was still able to hold them open because the lion was not hungry yet.
But he couldn't ignore the elephant in the room because of this.
"Professor, please believe that I have absolutely no such intention. I have no feelings for my father, and I don't even have many memories. The fragments that occasionally flashed by were also very blurry because of his excessive medication on me."
"My memory almost started from seeing you," Lex paused. The huge pressure forced him to hand over more hole cards. He didn't have many cards left.
"At the moment I woke up, I anchored myself—my life was divided into two paragraphs from then on. When I was born, I accepted the baptism of my biological father and became Alexander Luthor. And when you appeared, I accepted a brand new wisdom and clear revelation, becoming myself."
"You saw the religious significance in it?"
"Yes, new education and new ideas will lead a life to become a new person. The person who brought me all this will be destined to have a more complex relationship with me than blood. My worship of him must have theological nature."
"This is a quite interesting view," Shiler evaluated. "As the saved person, you magnified the divinity on your savior."
"I praise his nobility."
"You only praise your luck."
Lex suddenly looked up at Shiler.
"Actually, you don't revere anyone. The starting point of all your views is yourself," Shiler gently tucked his pocket square and said, "You only regard me as the miracle you received."
"I don't believe in religion."
"You don't believe in God either," Shiler said slowly. "You think you are God, so when you want to move, everything paves the way for you."
"If it were really like this, I wouldn't need anything to prove it," Lex immediately found a loophole.
"You are not to prove you, you just want to bestow me," Shiler picked up a piece of fish at an extremely slow speed and said, "You want me to establish a connection with you and accept me."
"Even if I temporarily override you, guide you, and protect you, I am like the guide encountered when Jesus descended to the world. One day, watching you rise high, obtaining blessings from my achievements."
"You need me to watch and record this process throughout, recording every paragraph full of divinity."
"Birth, suffering, breaking free, walking, accepting, ascending... In the script you wrote, I am the first and the last, I am the father and the son, the beginning and the end, birth and death."
"What you want is not just to become God, but to become the most perfect God who possesses complete rituals, conforms to the laws of the world, and is recognized by everyone."
Lex stood up. Shiler raised his eyes to look at him.
After being stared at by those desolate gray eyes, all anger dissipated. Lex sat down powerlessly again.
"You have mind reading."
"Bruce said the same thing," Shiler picked up the cutlery and slowly fiddled with the food on the plate, with a posture so leisurely that it made people grit their teeth.
But this successfully blocked Lex's words. He desperately didn't want to hold the same view as Bruce Wei En, but this time he had to admit that Wei En was right.
No one, whether a normal person or a lunatic, could guess how Shiler knew these things. There was no basis, and the probability of being able to guess so accurately was completely zero. This shouldn't have appeared at all.
Even if Shiler could read minds, he shouldn't be able to read so accurately and in detail. Luthor was sure that all his plans were classified and kept in memory fragments, and even he himself would have to spend a few days to find them all.
Then in the mouth of this man, the huge plan became the shortest, most concise, and most accurate summary. He himself might not be able to summarize it so accurately. Lex even wanted to say, thanks a lot.
"Then..." Shiler opened his mouth and spat out a syllable.
Lex took a deep breath, tidied up the collar of his shirt. He sat as straight as possible, and then waited for another rejection, and subsequent expulsion, or...
Lex was very clear about how serious a provocation the existence of this assumption was to Shiler's dignity. If he could still walk out of here alive today, then what awaited him later must be a storm.
This wasn't even a move behind. Lex thought, even if he were given another ten years, he wouldn't be able to infer how Shiler guessed his conception out of thin air. This was a gap in quality.
Didn't see it at the beginning, blindly moved and provoked, then he could only bear the consequences, there was no other choice.
Shiler didn't seem to be interested in the food. He left the dining table. Lex didn't look back.
After a while, he felt Shiler appear behind him. The alarm bells in his brain rang loudly, every cell in his body was screaming to run away, but he was stiff and couldn't move.
A hand crossed his side. At the moment his heart rate reached its peak, an empty goblet was placed in front of Lex.
Shiler stood on the side of Lex's chair, turning the cork of the red wine bottle. He looked down at Lex and said, "If I remember correctly, Mr. Luthor, you only made a subtle hint before, or made some restrained assumptions."
The red wine flowed into the cup. Lex saw that the hand holding the wine bottle was very steady. The way of exerting force was not like a scholar who held a fountain pen all day, full of unspeakable power, making people have many violent associations.
Lex's body was tightly pressed against the chair back, instinctively wanting to stay away from that hand. He didn't have any special empathy ability, but his high intelligence told him that it could be limbs, or it could be a murder weapon.
"Yes," Lex still decided to answer the question, "Out of politeness, I don't want anyone to be embarrassed because of this."
"Then if you formally make a request to me, how would you ask?"
A complete death question. Lex's breathing became a bit rapid. After he and Shiler both knew the metaphor behind this request, if he asked it again, it was simply dancing on the minefield of Shiler's dignity.
But if he didn't ask, he couldn't pull the topic to an irrelevant direction again. This trick only worked when the other party had patience. When there was no patience, it would only make himself become sashimi and be cut thinner.
"I wouldn't be so rude, Professor. No matter how I ask, it will sound like a demand rather than a request."
"I am prepared."
Lex closed his eyes.
He felt the wine glass being handed to his hand. He had to take it. When he took it, he opened his eyes and saw Shiler pouring wine into another glass.
Lex decided that long pain is worse than short pain, but he still worded it extremely carefully, deciding to put the focus of the phrase on Shiler, to avoid adding more bad impressions of being self-centered.
"Professor Rodriguez, can I have the honor of asking you to be my godfather?"
Asked, relieved, hurry up and pack up and leave. Lex had had enough. He warned himself absolutely not to be curious about how Shiler guessed his conception, otherwise he would be the next Bruce Wei En.
He had no interest in this, didn't consider it, just treat it as Shiler having mind reading. He would walk around here in the future. In short, hurry up and leave.
Then he felt the wine glass in his hand being touched lightly. He looked up and saw Shiler's smile.
"My honor, dear Mr. Godson."
Lex was hit hard.
He was completely stunned.
But it was not the kind of surprise of a pie falling from the sky. If he had to say, he was a bit like the pie falling from the sky, the excessive weightlessness and the dizziness of almost falling to pieces after landing.
What did he just do?
He asked Shiler if he was willing to be his godfather.
God, what on earth was he doing?!
This was a trap that even a three-year-old wouldn't fall for. Repeat the first five words of the question "do you like dad more or mom more," and then you can get the answer you are satisfied with. What is the difference between this and cheating a child?
Lex didn't know why he was in his 20s and could still fall for this kind of trap.
But, wait, Shiler agreed.
Why did he agree?
Lex couldn't help but glance at Shiler's plate. He would rather suspect that Shiler also ate too much salmon and parasites crawled into his brain than think that he was really happy to play this role.
"You must be wondering why I agreed."
Shiler walked back to his seat with the wine glass, but didn't sit down, just stood next to the cutlery, straightened the knife and fork with his hand, and said with his head lowered.
"But excluding all impossible answers, what you think is the truth—I appreciate your design very much, which is full of theological metaphorical artistic sense. You will achieve your plan sooner or later, because you have enough talent."
"Lex, this idea is beautiful. Thank you for your invitation. It is my honor to play an important role in it." ===== CHAPTER 2221 =====
