Chapter 2699
In the S. H. I. E. L. D. office, Nick Fury was staring at the computer screen without blinking. His hands were crossed in front of him, and the cold light from the computer screen reflected in his eyes, making him look coldly solemn.
Seeing Natasha knocked on the door and walked in. Nick only looked up at her once, then continued to stare at the computer screen. Seeing Natasha placed the document in her hand on the table. Nick's eyeballs didn't move, and he reached out to take the document.
After quickly browsing the content at the top of the document, Nick reached out and slapped the armrest of his chair hard, saying, "That's it."
Seeing Natasha stood straight in place with her arms crossed. She said, "It's been confirmed that Shiler is from your era, right? But there are many places in the data that are vague."
"Of course, of course it would be like that." Nick's mouth turned down, staring at the data in his hand, "It's hard for you to find any very precise descriptions from that era, because there were too many secrets that needed to be covered up."
"Who exactly is he?" Seeing Natasha walked to the front of the table, looked at Nick, and asked, "What kind of role did he play in that era?"
"He is... the 'Doctor'."
In the winter of January 1945, a tense atmosphere lingered in the streets and alleys of Berlin. Squads of soldiers swept past like flocks of crows, but they no longer had the arrogant spirit of the past. People had long had a premonition about the future of this country.
The dark, heavy clouds were about to disperse. No one knew whether the first ray of light or an even heavier natural disaster would be revealed through the cracks in the clouds. This country would pay an unimaginable price for this completely failed war. Most people had already accepted their fate, but some were still putting up a desperate struggle.
The lead-gray buildings on both sides of the street had only small windows, huddled together like giants pushing hands. The long nails driven into the wooden door of the bakery had long since rusted, but the threshold of the tavern had been worn down.
This winter was particularly difficult for ordinary Germans. Dusk witnessed more devout believers, and people came and went in the Catholic church.
A man wearing a long gray trench coat took off the hat on his head. He exhaled a breath of hot air from his chest, and the white mist gradually dissipated in the gray air. He threw two coins into the bowl of a beggar slumped at the entrance, made a cross on his chest, looked up at the crow perched on the eaves of the church, and stepped toward the stairs.
A young priest stood at the entrance of the stairs waiting. The two of them quickly walked into the church, their backs seeming to disappear into the mouth of a giant beast. The person observing from the roof opposite took away the binoculars and pressed his hair, which had been blown up by the wind, back into his hat.
"No abnormalities found." He shook his head and said to the person behind him, "I think Nick is making a mountain out of a molehill. There is no evidence to prove that this doctor is related to that murder case. He has a perfect alibi. More importantly, he has a good relationship with most of the Catholic churches in Berlin. We can't just rush in like this."
The speaker was a middle-aged man with short blonde hair, the image of a very common American soldier. The crisscrossing gullies on his face indicated that he had quite rich combat experience.
The door to the rooftop behind them suddenly opened. Both of them turned around vigilantly. Fortunately, what appeared there was a figure darker than the darkness.
"Hey, Nick." The blonde man greeted, "Why did you come here yourself? Aren't you watching Duke's side?"
"I'm worried about this place, so I came to take a look. You guys shouldn't have rushed in rashly, right? Especially you, Dino. Jones is most worried about you. This is a critical moment, you absolutely cannot cause trouble."
"Don't worry, Nick. Aren't I standing here just fine?" The blonde man called Dino smiled and said, "We guarantee we're just watching. Jonathan can testify for me."
He looked at his companion beside him, a man with short gray hair, slightly younger than him, but who seemed to have many white hairs naturally, making him look the oldest of the three.
"Any discoveries?" Nick walked over and sat on the edge of the rooftop. Dino shook his head and said, "We've been watching him for two days. All his behavior is normal. Every day it's just a triangle: hospital, home, church..."
"That's even more suspicious." Nick said, "Doesn't he have any entertainment activities? No one doesn't need entertainment."
"Relax, Nick." Jonathan spoke up, "In the eyes of people like them, prayer is a rare time for relaxation. They think chatting with the priest is very interesting, and Bible stories are better to watch than the news in those gossip tabloids. A thorough old fogey."
"If you think so, you're wrong." Nick raised one eyebrow and said, "The only survivor of the Heinimond Laboratory was killed just like that. Everyone who appeared at the scene or around the scene has major suspicions. Whether they are doctors, teachers, or any other social celebrities, we cannot exclude their suspicions without reason."
Dino sighed and said, "I know we have long fallen into the most unfavorable situation. Although invading the Heinimond Laboratory back then made Hitler abandon his atomic bomb plan, Hydra snatched away that unfinished atomic bomb. Now the only survivor who knows the serial number is also dead. If they really want to make a move, the whole of Berlin is in danger."
"They can't hold on for too long." Nick said, "Anyone with eyes can see they are making a desperate struggle. At most half a year, Germany will inevitably sign the unconditional surrender agreement. Now is their last chance, which is why they couldn't help but make a move."
Nick narrowed his eyes, revealing a slightly proud look, and said, "I'm not afraid of them making a move, because once they make a move, it means they can no longer sit still. The enemy is in the dark, and our disadvantage of being in the light will no longer exist. The snake will show its tail sooner or later."
"Jonathan and I thought of a way." Dino said, "Andael Shiler calls himself a devout believer. If he isn't, his conversation with the priest will inevitably reveal flaws. And if he really is, then perhaps the church's confessional will listen to the secrets he hides deep in his heart."
Nick shook his head and said, "You don't understand. This trick is useless against people like him. If he dares to call himself that, he won't let you find flaws. However, it is a direction that can be tried. Is the eavesdropping equipment ready?"
"Of course, tonight we will install eavesdropping terminals in the prayer and confession rooms of several churches he often visits. God will bless us."
"Just relying on God's blessing is useless." Nick stood up and said, "I will choose to make a backup plan. You guys have at most three days. If there is no effective information, use my method."
Nick turned and left. Dino shook his head and said to Jonathan beside him, "I admit he is indeed very powerful, but didn't the boss consider how much his temper offends people when he recruited him?"
"He is a good law enforcer." Jonathan evaluated.
Nick walked hurriedly through the streets, stopped at the entrance of a tavern, leaned against the wooden door frame, and sized up the people coming and going with vigilant eyes. When paying for the wine, he stared at the tavern owner's fingers.
He handed over the change, took the wine bottle from his hand, and the moment the gun was pulled out from under the counter, he smashed the bottle hard on the boss's wrist, snatched the gun, and turned to run.
Regardless of the chaotic sounds coming from behind, Nick walked fast, darted into the nearest alley with a 'whoosh', jumped hard, jumped onto the wall, and then climbed onto the balcony on the second floor next to it, scaring an old man in a wheelchair.
"Sorry, ma'am." Nick said in German.
"Are you being chased?" The old man asked. The window over there led to a garbage dump, so she pointed to the window on the other side.
Nick put the gun into his jacket, nodded to her, walked to the window on the other side to take a look, flipped out, and landed accurately in the garbage dump. A group of searchers with guns ran over his head.
Crawling out of the garbage dump, Nick sighed, shook his hands, dusted off his jacket, and walked fast in one direction.
Opening the tightly closed door, a burly figure darted in nimbly. Walking through the steep, uneven stairwell, Nick knocked on the door. The person who opened the door was a woman with short hair.
"Did you run into them again?" The woman made room for Nick to enter. Nick threw the gun in his arms to her and said, "They are becoming more and more unscrupulous. It seems the time for surrender will be even earlier than I imagined."
"How early? Five months later? Six months later?"
"No, I think it's probably three or four months away..." Berlin wasn't big enough, and the red flag was close at hand. Nick took off his coat and threw it into the bathroom. He turned to look at the woman and said, "Jones, does Felix need a surgery?"
"Are you referring to his heart problem?" The woman called Jones tidied the hair by her ear and said, "The doctor said he probably won't live past 25, but now isn't a good time for surgery either."
"I know we will probably be very busy in the next few months and won't have the energy to take care of a patient, but once Germany surrenders, we will probably need to evacuate here immediately, and it will be hard for us to take this boy with us."
Jones also appeared somewhat hesitant. She paced back and forth in the room and said, "You know, we aren't really his parents. All of this is just for the sake of being stationed here. Without orders from superiors, we can't do extra things."
"But you don't have the heart to, right? Felix is a good boy. He has helped us a lot. We can't abandon him."
"What do you intend to do?" Jones seemed to have made up her mind. She said, "I knew a few pretty good doctors when I was a nurse at the hospital, but Felix has congenital heart disease. The best time for surgery is 1-2 years old, but he is already 11 this year. Not all doctors have such technology. They don't have the confidence and won't be willing to cause trouble."
"We have been watching a doctor recently." Nick said, "Andael Shiler, the former chief surgeon at Landwehr Hospital, and also one of the last batches of people to withdraw into the city."
"The suspect in the Heinimond Laboratory survivor murder case?" Jones frowned deeply and said, "You were the one who said he was highly suspicious. You don't want him to perform surgery on Felix, do you?"
"If we are too far away from him, we can only see his disguise. Only by being close enough to him can we possibly see his true face, right?"
"You know how risky this is." Jones's tone was very hesitant. She said, "Now medicine is in short supply, the hospital is full of injured soldiers, and that bunch of lunatics is frantically searching for the surrenderers hiding in the city. Their pace of looting supplies will eventually approach here."
"Then this is the best time." Nick said, "Only fierce fish hide in chaotic ponds, and what we want to see isn't whether he is fierce, but who he bites for."
"Who do you think it is?"
"It's best not to be the worst result." Nick said, "You know I'm not referring to the Gestapo."
