Chapter 2700

~11 min read 2,156 words

A few people wearing shirts were crowded into a small room, constantly fiddling with headphones and equipment. Dino poked his head out from a ball of thread and shouted, "There's sound! Listen to what they are talking about!"

The crackling sound of current came from the headset. The few people sitting in front of the machine kept pressing buttons. A slightly cold voice with a distinctive, slurred German accent said.

"... My former colleagues told me they are on the verge of madness... they can't even use white towels. Anyone who dares to show a tendency to surrender will be executed immediately. People are very afraid..."

"Yes, the church is also under their surveillance. They don't allow the invasion of the Orthodox Church. If you are always talking about some less popular Bible stories, they will say you are a heretic..."

"The medicine I can provide is too little. I'm afraid it's close to none now. I know Mrs. Dell's leg has been hurting, but the hospital has been looted by them... May God bless the people."

"He went to the confessional!" Jonathan pressed his headset and said, "Switch channels, switch channels quickly!"

Nick leaned over, leaned his body forward, and listened with the headset on Jonathan's left side. His brown eyeballs were as deep as a piece of fallen skin.

"... I feel very sorry, Lord, I have sinned..." That voice was still ringing intermittently, "People are constantly dying, and I am adding to the burden for some of them. I know they are destined not to go to heaven, but perhaps going to hell is also a kind of relief..."

Nick's eyes widened immediately. His hands were trembling slightly, and he was so excited he almost shouted, but soon the voice came again.

"There isn't enough anti-inflammatory medicine. Patients with sutured wounds can only rely on their own immunity or wait for death. Those two surgeries didn't go smoothly, and the one three days ago, that woman didn't make it. She and the child both died. I don't know how to atone for this monstrous sin. I only hope you can forgive me, my Lord..."

"... Late last night I heard the crow's cry, which meant the army passed under my house again. I don't know what they want this time, or if they dragged another murdered person out of his house..."

Dino was about to say something, but Nick signaled him to be quiet. He frowned and listened quietly.

"Artur is a special patient. He asked me to perform surgery on him to remove the shrapnel embedded in his ribs during the disaster of the abnormal laboratory destruction three years ago, but I had to refuse him. Under the conditions of insufficient medicine and no antibacterial environment, I couldn't just open his chest like that..."

"He appeared very painful, almost wailing, unable to say a complete sentence. I don't know what he encountered, but people in this era are all the same. I can't do more for him."

"The day after I refused him, I heard the news of his death. A group of people is making a big fuss about hunting down the murderer who killed him, which means he hasn't completely died yet. There must be a secret he wants to take to the grave..."

Everyone in the small room held their breath. Although it was winter, it was still very hot in the room. Everyone was sweating. Although the sweat flowed into their eyes, they had no time to wipe it. Even Jones, who was standing by the door, was so nervous she could hear her own heartbeat.

"I know Artur was a scientist when he was young. When I was checking his wounds, he kept muttering some formulas, looking like he was dreaming about work."

"I thought he had such a strong obsession, he could at least hold on for a while. Once the red flag enters Berlin, he might still be saved, but unfortunately..."

"Bang! Crackle—"

A loud noise startled everyone in the room. The current sound indicated that this noise came from that end. They heard many German curses. Nick didn't even need to listen to know that everyone who broke into the room had a swastika on their shoulder.

"Fuck!" Nick couldn't help but curse in his native language. He took a deep breath, pointed outside the door, and said, "Run!"

A group of people ran toward the door hurriedly, and almost in the blink of an eye, they were all gone, and even the heat in the room dissipated rapidly.

Soon a somewhat pale and thin boy walked out from the bedroom door. Jones hurried to meet him and said, "Felix, why did you come out? Did they disturb you?"

"No, nothing. I just want to know when all this will end." Felix said, "My heart is beating very slowly. It might stop soon."

"No, it won't. We are preparing a surgery for you. Everything will go very smoothly."

And this boy only looked at the gray sky outside through the small window. The withered branches were covered with crows. People in uniforms shuttled through the streets and alleys. They all flew up and became a few drops of black blood splashed on the sky.

Blood... too much blood.

When Nick rushed into the church, he only saw this scene. He didn't see any living people here, but there was a lot of blood. What was even stranger was that there were not many signs of fighting, as if someone had specially brought a large bucket of blood and splashed it here.

"My God..." Dino looked as he walked inside. The rows and rows of chairs in the church were full of blood, and the traces of splashing could be vaguely seen.

"There is one here whose neck was cut." Dino pointed to the source of one of the bloodstains, "Slid from right to left, almost cutting off the head. Just fell to the ground like this, choked to death by blood before losing too much blood."

"There is another one over there." Nick said, "It seems like it was cut from the neck to the ribs, and it was just one strike."

"No signs of shooting." One of them said, "None of the blood splashes were caused by shooting."

"I know." Nick said, "They don't have many bullets now, so they won't shoot unless necessary. Look for signs of bayonets."

"Aren't these all done by bayonets?" Jonathan asked with some confusion, "Besides that, do they have any other cold weapons?"

Nick turned his eyeballs to look at him and said, "Do you think it was the Gestapo who did it?"

"Of course, don't you think so too?" After Jonathan finished speaking, he suddenly realized something was wrong and said, "If it was a group of people catching one person, how could the victim bleed so much?"

"More importantly, how could he be cut in the neck on this side first, and then have half his body cut open on that side?" Nick asked, "Don't tell me you think so much blood only killed one person."

"Then maybe they died together?" Dino knew something was wrong as soon as he said this, and then continued, "Then what about the bodies? They wouldn't secretly lose the victim's body. They would want to put his miserable state here for everyone to see."

"Maybe they felt it was shameful that their team suffered losses?" Jonathan said, "Or maybe that doctor named Shiler has something special that requires them to cover up for him?"

And Nick had already reconstructed what happened here in his mind. He licked his dry lips, feeling sweat dripping from the hair on the back of his head, like a flood passing through a forest, washing away the rational parts of his mind.

"This isn't dying together..." Nick whispered. He took a few more steps forward, stepping into the gaps where the blood splashed. This was very difficult because the church wasn't big to begin with, and a large amount of blood had already seeped into the floor cracks.

He walked forward again, almost reaching the side of the pulpit. In front of him was the statue of Jesus. Nick was just about to walk over when he heard a faint creak.

"Get out of the way! Get out of the way quickly!"

Dino's roar was a bit late. Nick lunged to the side as fast as he could, but the heavy falling Jesus statue still smashed his foot. Nick let out a scream.

The plaster Jesus statue was smashed to pieces. Nick was able to retract his foot, but a large gash was still smashed into his ankle, which was visibly swollen, but the intense pain couldn't pull back his consciousness.

Because behind the cross that bound Jesus, three bodies were tied from top to bottom. The first person's neck was almost cut off, the second person's half head had disappeared, and the third person was dissected on half his body. When they fell, their faces were down, looking like believers praying in the ruins.

Nick swallowed his saliva.

He struggled to climb up from the ground, endured the severe pain, limped to the side of the three people, reached out, and opened the first person's mouth.

Inside was a small, shiny thing. After Nick took it out, he found it was a metal part, a bit like the bearing of a toy car, but it had been blackened by smoke, and its original appearance could no longer be seen.

A piece of resin was placed in the second person's mouth, which seemed to be part of an amber pendant, but it was also smashed and broken.

In the third person's mouth was a piece of charred pine bark, only a very small piece, but pine burning produces a different smell from other trees. Nick recognized it only then.

"What exactly is going on?" Nick asked.

"This must have some meaning." Dino said, "He wants the person who discovers all this to understand something from these bodies."

"What is that?" Nick was utterly bewildered. He said, "Could it be something like a Bible story?"

"There are many stories related to three in the Bible." Jonathan said, "But if you want to talk about the most famous one, it's probably the Three Wise Men. They brought three treasures to Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

"So these three pieces of junk correspond to that?" Nick looked at the things in his hand and said, "Metal parts, resin, and tree bark?"

"Maybe that's what he thinks. These three people aren't any wise men." Jonathan said, "Maybe he is expressing that they are just fake wise men, and the treasures they brought aren't worth mentioning."

"It's really crazy." Nick sighed. He deliberately turned his head away, not looking at the three bodies, and said, "Why did they come here? Why chase Shiler?"

"He is a person who is very easily targeted." Dino said, "He has quite professional surgical skills, can get medicine, and doesn't look difficult to deal with. These reasons are enough to make some people unscrupulous."

"Yes, but they are very wrong. I said long ago that this kind of person who looks like an intellectual is the hardest to deal with, because if he can be the only carp in a pond of crocodiles, then either there is a shark standing behind him, or he himself is a shark. Let's go."

Supported by his teammates, Nick walked toward the back door of the church. His timing was very precise. Not long after they left, someone rushed in, but the first thing that rang out in the church wasn't the arrogant cursing, but a silence.

Nick sighed and said, "Besides this church, where else would he appear? I think we must meet."

"Are you really going?" Dino said, "I'm not questioning you, but if he can kill three fully armed Gestapo in the church, he can also kill you."

"He has no reason to do so." Nick said, "I know he looks crazy, but he is definitely not a lunatic. In any case, he is our hope to survive these last few months."

"And also Felix's hope." Nick added in his heart.

After dinner, Jones was bandaging Nick's injured leg. The wound wasn't deep, but the ankle being smashed was fatal. It would soon swell up into a large lump, until it was stiff and completely unable to move, and his mobility was greatly weakened.

"Our people tracked him down." Jonathan walked in and said, "He didn't go to the church tonight, but went to a residential house. It's an old residential area in the city center. No one has been found watching nearby for the time being."

Nick turned his head abruptly, looked at him, and said, "He entered a residential house? Who lives there?"

"According to the tavern owner downstairs, it's a couple with the surname Eisenhardt."
