Chapter 2809: Forbidden Zone of Alien Demons (16)
After obtaining the consultation results from Greed, the Bishop contacted Peter at the first opportunity, asking him to try to leave the hotel.
Peter had just woken up not long ago. He rubbed his somewhat swollen eyes, got out of bed, took his equipment, and walked out towards the elevator.
*Ding*—the elevator door opened. He saw a woman standing inside, but he didn't look closely and walked into the elevator with his head down. The moment the elevator door closed, he felt cold sweat dripping down his back.
What was that???
Peter took a deep breath. What had he just seen?
He tried hard to search his memory and then found a fleeting glimpse from his peripheral vision. What on earth was that thing on the woman's neck???
Peter swallowed his saliva and sent a message to Wei En.
"Doctor, I just seemed to see that on a woman's neck, it wasn't a head, but cluster after cluster of tentacles. But when I looked closely, it disappeared again."
Peter couldn't help but look back at the woman, but she was behaving very normally. Seeing Peter, she even smiled at him, as if everything Peter had just experienced was a hallucination.
Receiving the message, Wei En immediately realized that Peter's side might also be starting to deteriorate. If the hotel could indeed be left, then now might be the last chance.
"Don't be nervous, Peter. Forget those anomalies; treat them as if they never happened, and don't mention them to anyone."
Wei En, who was staying at Wayne Manor, could neither speak nor communicate with others, so communicating with Peter via messages was the only thing he could do. He comforted Peter as much as possible, telling him not to be afraid.
Peter tried hard to calm down and deleted the images of mental contamination from his mind. The elevator stopped, but it didn't stop at the first floor. As soon as the door opened, a man carrying a toolbox walked in.
"Sorry, the elevator is broken. If you want to go to the lobby, just take the stairs." The repairman said this and stood at the door, clearly wanting to let Peter and the others out.
Peter didn't really want to go out, but his gaze flickered, and using his peripheral vision, he saw that the toolbox the repairman was carrying wasn't a toolbox at all, but a rotting human head.
Peter lifted his feet and left, not caring about the woman or the repairman. He rushed out of the elevator and ran towards the end of the corridor.
There were basically no guest rooms below the fifth floor. The third floor was the business area, with reception rooms, conference rooms, and a souvenir shop.
Peter ran all the way, passed two large conference rooms, and finally stopped at the door of the pantry.
He heard the sound of a door opening, so he looked back and found a group of people in suits and leather shoes walking out of the conference room one after another.
His vision flickered again. He saw that every one of them had fish fins growing behind their ears, their eyeballs were protruding outwards, and mucus was dripping from their mouths. But when he looked closely again, they were all gone.
Peter felt a sense of panic, but he was still able to move. He followed the safety exit signs and ran towards the stairwell, but encountered an unexpected person. Jerome was standing at the corner of the stairwell looking at him.
"You've already discovered it, right? The nightmare is about to wake up."
"Nightmare? You mean this is a nightmare?"
"Not entirely." Jerome said, "Where do you think we are now?"
"The hotel, of course." Although Peter said it with certainty, he was actually a bit guilty. He really couldn't figure out these supernatural things; his intuition just told him that something wasn't right.
Jerome shook his head. He walked downstairs with Peter and said, "Do you know? About 20 years ago, Wayne Hotel underwent a large-scale renovation. On the outside, it was said to be a hotel refurbishment, but in reality, it was to hide some things."
"What things?"
"To tell you the truth, I don't know either, so I want to invite you to go take a look together." Jerome said, "I think it will be very shocking."
"I want to leave the hotel." Peter didn't waste words with him and said directly, "I'm going to Wayne Manor."
"You can't leave the hotel now, or rather, there is only one way to leave the hotel, and that is to go down to the hotel basement with me to take a look."
Peter stared at him for a long time, wanting to find traces of lying on his face. He wasn't stupid; he knew this might be a monster's trap, and the Jerome in front of him might just want to lure him to hell.
Finding that he couldn't persuade Peter, Jerome changed the subject. He said, "You went to the library?"
Peter sighed and nodded. He hadn't actually found anything particularly important in the library, but he had found a book about Cat Getan's history.
Peter didn't really like literature and history books, so the more he read, the sleepier he got. Being too sleepy to go on, he had no choice but to return to his hotel room to sleep, had many bizarre nightmares, and felt dizzy when he woke up.
"Haven't you ever wondered why you can suddenly see them?" Jerome said. When mentioning "them," he hooked his fingers and made a quotation mark gesture.
Peter knew he was referring to the monsters that appeared in his peripheral vision, but he really didn't know why. Jerome looked at him and said, "Only on the verge of a mental breakdown can you see the truth of this world. To maintain this state, I put in quite a lot of effort. You're quite lucky."
Peter didn't feel that his mind was on the verge of a breakdown; he felt he was still quite rational, but he really couldn't explain why the world in his eyes had changed into a different appearance.
Peter tried to use his peripheral vision to look at Jerome, but he really didn't see any monsters on him. He scratched his head and said, "I don't think so either. Now I can just walk to the first floor, push open the revolving door, and walk out. But you must tell me what's in the hotel basement, otherwise, I won't go with you."
Jerome seemed to be weighing the situation. He looked Peter up and down again and then said, "I see an outstanding talent in you. It's hard for me to describe, but I think you and Bruce Wayne are the same kind of people. You are born to be entangled by certain things."
"I don't think this is anything worth being proud of." Peter thought of that black sun. He suddenly remembered that he had the ability to return to the thick fog at any time, and perhaps he could even take people back. In that case, he would have a way out if he encountered a dangerous situation.
Peter gathered some courage again and said, "Since you think I can help, you can't keep all the intelligence from me, otherwise I won't cooperate with you."
Jerome looked at Peter strangely. He felt this guy was too immature; he couldn't see anything special about him no matter how he looked, but his intuition was telling Jerome that he was quite extraordinary.
Out of curiosity, Jerome said, "There is a road to Wayne Manor in the basement of Wayne Hotel. This was part of the facilities during the hotel renovation back then. No one knows what it was for."
"You definitely know." Peter's directness surprised Jerome. He said, "I think we can't waste any more time. It's best to be frank."
"Alright, it seems I can't hide it from you. But this has to start from a job I had one day. A few years ago, I joined an insurance company and became an insurance investigator."
"You can understand it as me going to investigate those insurance cases, excluding insurance fraud suspicions, and striving for benefits for my company."
"This wasn't an easy job. At first, it was fine; I could see through those people's lies at a glance. Because I did well, whenever the company encountered tricky cases, they sent me over at the first opportunity."
"At first, the company thought it was just a serial murder case, and even the police thought so. But I encountered some things that brought my mind to the verge of a breakdown, and that was how I saw the truth of this world."
"Along with the investigation, I discovered that some kind of mysterious contamination was spreading in the city. I investigated all the way and found that this contamination didn't actually appear recently. All clues pointed to 20 years ago."
"What happened 20 years ago?" Peter asked.
"Someone should have died, but they were still alive." Jerome revealed some expressions of recollection. He said, "Back then, it wasn't the Wayne family that dominated Cat Getan City, but there were four major families, as well as some other wealthy people. The relationships between them were not stable."
"Every family wanted to be the leader, and the Wayne family's ambition was not small. The family head at the time, Thomas Wayne, was judged to be the most brilliant business genius of this century. Ever since he started taking over the family business, the Wayne Group had been thriving."
"I didn't investigate what happened after that very clearly; it seems someone was deliberately hiding it. I only know that Thomas Wayne encountered an accident, but he didn't die; he survived."
Peter heard Jerome's implication. He said, "You think Thomas should have died in that accident?"
"That's what I do." Jerome said, "Appraising various accidents, judging whether someone deliberately committed insurance fraud. I can responsibly say that in the files I investigated, that accident should have taken Thomas Wayne's life, but he didn't die."
Peter was very smart. He immediately realized, "Is the person who survived still Thomas Wayne?"
"That is the point." Jerome nodded and said, "Not only that, three months after the accident, Thomas Wayne reappeared in the public eye and promulgated a series of reform measures. It was this series of measures that established the Wayne Group's status today."
"Does this not match his former style?"
"It can't be said that it didn't match completely; it can only be said that it was more radical." Jerome shook his head and said, "At the same time, his wife, Martha Wayne, also had problems. Half a year after the accident, Martha Wayne became pregnant, but since then, she rarely went out, and her former friends couldn't see her much either."
"It's understandable that a pregnant woman needs to recuperate."
"No, it's not that simple. A few months after she became pregnant, Wayne Manor started renovations. This is very strange, isn't it? Who would renovate their house when there is a pregnant woman at home?"
Peter nodded, but still said with some hesitation, "Maybe the manor's environment wasn't suitable for a newborn. They are so rich, they should have many houses; it's normal to move to another place to live."
"The problem is right here. They had so many properties, but they didn't choose to move. Martha Wayne came to Wayne Hotel alone, while Thomas was still making waves in the business world."
Peter clearly showed a disapproving expression. He said, "It sounds like Thomas wasn't a responsible father, but this is, after all, their family business."
"But what's even stranger is that they chose to live separately during that period. The outside world was speculating whether they were going to divorce, but once the child was born, their relationship became good again, like glue and lacquer, attending various banquets together, becoming a model couple in the circle."
"Perhaps postpartum depression?" Peter also felt a bit unable to convince himself. "If it really was depression, then shouldn't it have been cured immediately once the child was born?"
"This matter is very suspicious, so I conducted an in-depth investigation." The two had already walked to the lower part of the second-floor stairs and were about to reach the first floor. Jerome continued.
"I discovered that although Wayne Hotel and Wayne Manor were both properties of the Wayne family, the largest construction engineering company in Cat Getan at that time belonged to the Kane family, which was Martha Wayne's maiden family."
"If there were no accidents, the Kane family must have participated in the renovation projects of these two places. As for what they did, we must go to the basement to take a look." ===== CHAPTER 2810 =====
