Chapter 3234: Reviewing the Plot—What Exactly Is It? (Part 3)
"Who else wants to continue?" Bruce turned to look at Owlman and said, "Your setting shouldn't be complicated either, right?"
Owlman sighed and said, "This is my first time playing this kind of game too."
"I'm surprised you would cooperate with him." Bruce pointed at Greed. He hadn't forgotten that it was Owlman who led them to the Siltek company's laboratory at the time.
"Didn't you cooperate with him too? Fine." Owlman curled his lips and said, "In my backstory, I did encounter some trouble, and they were able to help me settle it."
"Is it the story about your superior that you mentioned?"
"Not entirely." Owlman paused and said, "Your previous analysis was correct. I am an anarchist, so in my backstory, the jurisdiction I was in was filled with tragedies where people used weird events to seek revenge and exterminate families. Those events were so simple they could be seen through at a glance, but the law enforcement departments ignored them because solving weird events wasn't their job."
"And you wanted to expose all of this?"
"That's right. That was my main purpose for coming here."
"But you weren't doing it for justice."
"No." Owlman didn't seem to intend to hide his evil. He said directly, "I wanted to let them understand what it feels like when truly terrifying weird events descend upon their heads. For this, I did a lot of preparation, and the goal was to summon a real disaster."
"You're a cultist???" The Agent was truly a bit surprised. He didn't expect this to be Owlman's true purpose. He pursued the question: "Did you do anything?"
Owlman nodded and said, "When I learned that monsters had weaknesses and could be restricted, I used this point to commit quite a few cases, throwing the jurisdiction I was in into total chaos."
"But after all, I was just a small policeman and didn't have the ability to handle everyone. But just as I was releasing the weird events, I came into contact with the mastermind behind the scenes."
"I hoped to be able to use the mastermind to kill more incompetent law enforcement officers, and as far as I know, a force in the hands of the mastermind was standing by in Farainess."
"Wait a minute. When you made up the story, you shouldn't have known about the existence of the church and old Siltek, right?"
"I didn't, but I knew there must be a mastermind behind the scenes." Owlman's logic was very self-consistent. He said, "My story always assumed that the monsters were a conspiracy created by some organization, not some natural disaster. Since it was man-made, of course there was a mastermind behind it."
Batman understood his logic. Owlman actually didn't know who the real mastermind set by the Beyonder was, but he firmly believed that such a person existed. His purpose for coming here was to find this person, to have him help settle his current trouble, or even to use him to go further.
"At that time, you thought the mastermind was old Siltek?"
Owlman nodded and said, "The people from the church were performing poorly."
Everyone else looked at Pride, and then at the Agent.
The backstory Schiller designed for himself was indeed not outstanding, and the church line didn't surface from the beginning. Instead, the Siltek Medical Insurance Company line appeared earlier, so Owlman naturally thought this was the mastermind set in the game.
"To be honest, I'm not very familiar with this kind of game, and I don't know how to win, so that's how it was."
Although he said this, Bruce could still feel that he was a bit unconvinced. When others died, there was at least some reason. Owlman's death was actually completely an unprovoked disaster. His character setting didn't have such strong aggressiveness, and logically speaking, he could have lived for a while longer.
But unfortunately, the Agent was unreasonable.
"Does his backstory have anything to do with the main line?" Greed asked the Beyonder.
"Remember Jeff's family's new daughter-in-law?"
"That female lawyer Doris who exploded in the abdomen after eating fish?" Greed frowned slightly and said, "Isn't that the backstory of the Pale Knight?"
The Beyonder shook his head and said, "If the Pale Knight was indeed still a famous lawyer, it would be possible, but in reality, wasn't he already destitute?"
Greed then realized. They had previously assumed that the Pale Knight had many lawyer friends, and Doris might have been related to his previous cases and also knew Madeline.
But if the Pale Knight had already been destitute a long time ago, it was estimated that he wouldn't have had anything to do with Doris. And if Madeline was a bad seed who directed and acted in the extermination tragedy, in order to prevent exposure, she probably wouldn't have dealt with lawyers too much.
"Doris's family died in the weird event brought about by Owlman," the Beyonder said. "And Jeff's son saved her, and the two of them got married."
"What is important about this person?" Bruce said.
"There was fish in her stomach, and the state of death was very strange—exploding from the inside out," the Agent suddenly spoke up. "This should be related to the sacrifice."
"That's right." The Beyonder nodded in acknowledgment and said, "This brings us to the plot outside of my design."
"What is it?"
"Deep Ones," the Beyonder sighed and said. "In my original story, they didn't exist at all. They were written into someone's background setting and then summoned over."
"Who?"
The Beyonder looked at the Joker.
The Joker nodded readily and said, "My setting was a painter, but not an ordinary painter. My ancestor was a court painter in Europe, always serving the royal family."
"He was once highly valued by the royal family, until one day, he contracted a strange madness. He would draw all the characters under his pen as ugly fish monsters. When questioned, he insisted that they were just like that."
"The terrifying and ugly paintings he drew were all destroyed, and he himself was locked in an insane asylum. But even there, he didn't stop creating, always drawing those ugly fish-headed monsters."
"Many years passed, his paintings were scattered, but some were preserved and brought to the Americas. And when I saw one of the paintings, I gained the same inspiration as him."
"I believed that this kind of monster must exist, must be right beside us, only we couldn't see them. There must have been legends about them circulating in the world."
"I kept searching for relevant history, until one day, I saw some ambiguous eyewitness reports in the records of a small, unknown village. They all said this was just an urban legend like Bigfoot, but I knew I was going to welcome their arrival."
After the Joker finished speaking, Greed couldn't help but applaud. He said, "Truly worthy of the Joker and Batman, you can even make up stories that match."
Batman's setting was that this small village had sacrificed to evil gods before; the Joker's setting was that this small village had witnessed monsters. Doesn't that connect?
"So you summoned the Deep Ones?" Bruce asked.
"That's right. I had to prove that my ancestor and I were right. These ugly fish-headed monsters exist. They have long since mixed into our side, gradually replacing our relatives and friends..."
"Are you sure you're talking about fish-headed monsters, not Lizardmen?"
"About the same." The Joker waved his hand and said, "I just thought that since Farainess is a seaport, fish-men would be more reasonable, so I made up this monster."
"You didn't specify Deep Ones?"
"No." The Joker said, "Actually, legends of ugly fish-men circulate all over the world. It's not unique to any mythology. Who cares what that thing that comes ashore is called."
"Ahem." The Beyonder cleared his throat and said, "He indeed didn't directly say that what came ashore were Deep Ones, but the setting of this game is Cthulhu Mythos, and the most famous fish-man monster in Cthulhu Mythos is the Deep Ones."
"How did he summon them?"
"Cult sacrifice," the Joker said directly. "When I was in the insane asylum, my ancestor gained a lot of inspiration through painting. He deduced a way to summon this kind of fish-man monster to prove his innocence, but he died before he could put it into practice."
"Which is feeding people fish and then killing them?"
"It must be special fish," the Joker said. "Fish that have lived together with these ugly fish-man monsters. After people eat them, they will be influenced by special power, and after the sacrifice, they can summon the monsters."
"Did you go do these things after you landed?"
The Joker shook his head and said, "I didn't have that much time. These were all things in the background setting. It didn't say you couldn't sacrifice."
"Then you agreed?" Bruce looked at the Beyonder again.
"At the time, I thought it would be good to add some small monsters on the road," the Beyonder said. "Actually, at that time, I already had a premonition that you wouldn't play according to the script, so I had to increase the difficulty for you."
"And it didn't add any difficulty." The Agent looked at Bruce and said, "You went on a speeding spree, used up all their oxygen, and they were so tired they all went into the sea to replenish their oxygen."
Bruce laughed triumphantly.
"Alright, now there are only two big highlights left." Pride looked at Bruce and Greed and said, "Only your backstories haven't been fully revealed. Do you have anything to say?"
Greed and Bruce looked at each other. Bruce said, "I'll go first?"
Greed had no objection, so Bruce spoke up: "First of all, I must say my backstory was changed."
"What do you mean?"
"What I told the Beyonder was the original version, but after making a deal with Nyarlathotep, he used that book to change a second version for me."
"I know." Pride snorted coldly and said, "Excellent graduate of Miskatonic University."
Bruce cleared his throat and said somewhat awkwardly, "That was an accident, an accident. I already spent the money, can't I set a good academic background for myself?"
"Let's talk about the original version first," Greed said. "When you said you were an agent, you shouldn't have made a deal with Nyarlathotep yet, right?"
"No, I was indeed an agent."
"Then how did you become a psychologist?"
Bruce glanced at Greed silently.
Greed looked at him, and he looked at Greed.
The two stared at each other for a long time before Bruce spoke first.
"This matter has to start from when the abnormal events first appeared. Speaking of which, when the weird events were spreading globally, in order to strengthen national security, the US government also made certain efforts."
"Approved by Congress, the Department of Homeland Defense and Strategic Security Logistics was established. For many years, they have been dealing with various weird events within the federal government with the support of the government, and have also cultivated many talents with special abilities."
"And I, am a psychological consultant providing psychological counseling services to agents..." ===== CHAPTER 3235 =====
