Chapter 4383: Far Star Project (Part 8)
The night in the snow did not become bright. The dark clouds covering the sky over Metropolis plunged everything into deep darkness. Diana slept very restlessly; in her dreams, one moment it was the painful faces of her injured sisters, and the next it was Schiller's somewhat indifferent and ambiguous smile.
The sound of sirens suddenly rose, startling a patch of lights. Diana was also startled awake. She rushed to the window, pulled open the curtains, and looked outside. Smoke rose from the building, and the raging fire illuminated the night sky.
Countless police cars and fire trucks gathered in that direction, but Diana smelled a trace of unusual atmosphere. She didn't even have time to change her clothes, just hurriedly grabbed the God Killer sword closest to her and flew out at the fastest speed.
The building was broken in half, and it looked like it was about to smash into a fire truck. A figure whistled past, lifting the fire truck. Diana looked at Hal, who was covered in green light, and nodded to him gently.
Soon, J'onn also flew over. Clearly, they were all suddenly startled awake; the battle during the day consumed a lot of their physical strength, and they slept exceptionally soundly at night. After waking up, they didn't even have time to change their clothes and appeared at the accident site in their pajamas.
When the building collapsed, Diana realized this was not an ordinary fire. On one hand, although this was the city center of Metropolis, it was not the financial district, and there was simply no one working through the night here. There was no one in the building, so naturally, it was impossible to cause a fire. On the other hand, the fire in the building clearly did not reach the extent of causing the building to collapse, but the building was broken in half.
"Could it be that Schiller released Doomsday again?"
Diana swore that this time seeing Schiller, she would definitely give him a punch. But after bypassing the stairs, what she saw was not that huge figure, but another strange monster.
He had a strong physique, but not as huge as Doomsday, only a bit taller than ordinary humans, but the pressure he gave people was not reduced at all. He was wearing metal armor full of spikes, had two giant horns curving backward on his head, and his face looked very ferocious.
When he looked over, Diana also felt a shock in her heart. Those eyes were filled with brutality and cruelty. She subconsciously raised her arms to block, but the other party's speed was too fast. With a "boom", Diana was smashed directly into the ground.
She spat out a mouthful of blood, struggled to raise her shield, blocked the other party's next strike, but her face was even paler, and her arms began to tremble.
Fortunately, her teammates arrived in time. J'onn flew over like an arrow off the string, hitting the monster's waist heavily, slamming him away. Hal took the opportunity to pick up Diana and put her behind the battle line.
Barry went to retrieve the Lasso of Truth and wanted to repeat the old trick. But just as the blue lightning reached the monster's side, the other party waved his big hand. Barry was smashed out of the Speed Force directly, thrown into an arc in mid-air, and then fell heavily to the ground.
"Uh!!!!!!" Barry let out a scream. Hal rushed over quickly and carried him up. When he put Barry down, he found that blood foam was starting to bubble from his mouth. He gasped in shock and shouted, "Barry is injured!"
"Send him to the hospital," Diana, lying on the ground, shouted, "Hurry! If it's too late, it will be over!"
Diana had seen many wounded on the battlefield; this was clearly Barry's ribs breaking and piercing his lungs; once blood choked into his respiratory system, it would be all over. Hal had to hold Barry and leave.
Arthur couldn't care about much and summoned seawater like he did during the day, wanting to trap this new monster with seawater. But J'onn shouted at him, "Don't!!"
The next second, Arthur was also smashed into the ground, and the Golden Trident slipped from his hand. The seawater lost control in an instant, descending from mid-air like a waterfall, directly submerging the nearby blocks.
J'onn shot another laser beam, and the monster dodged agilely. J'onn narrowed his eyes to read his inner mind, and then called out his name: "... Steppenwolf."
No one had an impression of this name, but the monster named Steppenwolf turned his head and stared at J'onn, saying, "You've heard of me?"
J'onn was still carefully searching his memory, but soon he saw a terrifying black shadow in the depths of his memory.
"Darkseid..."
Upon hearing this name, Diana seemed to think of something. She climbed up from the ground desperately, knelt on the ground panting, used her last bit of divine power, and rushed over waving the God Killer sword.
But her full-force slash was blocked directly by Steppenwolf with his arm, and she was thrown down. Steppenwolf kept turning his head, seemingly looking for something. Soon, his gaze locked onto Victor in the air.
"J'onn!!! Take him away!!!!" Diana shouted desperately, "Hurry, take him away!!!!"
J'onn seemed to read Diana's thoughts too; he didn't hesitate anymore and flew to Victor's side with a "whoosh". Victor seemed to want to struggle, but J'onn roared in his ear, "Go!"
J'onn flew away quickly with Victor. Steppenwolf seemed angry that Diana had ruined his good deed, turned his head, and picked her up by the neck again. However, upon seeing her face, he seemed to think of something.
"You are an Amazon? What is your relationship with Zeus?"
Diana struggled constantly, unable to say a word. Steppenwolf continued to ask, "Where is the Mother Box?"
He loosened his hand, and Diana fell to the ground. She gasped for a few breaths, coughing while saying, "I knew it... Apokolips, Darkseid. You thieves don't die..."
"The powerful forces in this universe should all belong to the great Dark Lord," Steppenwolf said disdainfully, "Otherwise, should they be left to you fragile bugs?"
Diana lay on her side on the ground, coughing violently. She supported her body with one hand, glaring fiercely at Steppenwolf, and said, "Zeus could defeat you once, and he can defeat you a second time. Don't even think about taking anything from here!"
Steppenwolf's gaze turned cold. He walked to Diana's side, raised his foot, and stepped down heavily. But just at the moment he switched his center of gravity and prepared to exert force, Diana rolled, kicked the foot he was standing on the ground with, and reached out to summon the Lasso of Truth. The lasso, like a flexible snake, followed Steppenwolf's leg, wrapped around his waist, and then directly bound his arms.
Diana flipped up and kicked him down. But in just these few short seconds, the Lasso of Truth actually looked like it was about to be torn apart. Diana stabbed his chest with her sword, but the God Killer sword, which had been invincible in the past, could only pierce in a small section.
Steppenwolf was stimulated by the pain, roared, broke free from the Lasso of Truth, and smashed Diana down with a punch. But his movement affected the wound on his chest, making him gasp for air as well.
The green light on the skyline lit up; it was clearly Diana's teammates returning to defend. Steppenwolf snorted coldly and said, "You will definitely regret going against Darkseid."
After saying this, he jumped high and disappeared into the darkness. Diana lay on the ground breathing laboriously; she had completely exhausted all her strength, but she still hadn't been able to hurt this monster.
J'onn, who flew back, helped her up. Diana didn't even have time to breathe and said, "I have to, I have to return to the Amazon..."
"What exactly is going on?" Hal asked, "Do you know that monster?"
Diana walked forward and said, "He is Darkseid's subordinate. Darkseid came to Earth many years ago, seemingly to look for something. The gods and other ancient relics joined forces to repel them. I didn't expect them to come again..."
"They want to find the Mother Box," J'onn said, "But I didn't see what this thing is in his memory. They themselves seem not to know, only knowing that this thing is hidden on Earth."
"Is Barry okay?" Diana asked. She seemed to have changed her mind and didn't intend to go directly to the Amazon, but took out her phone to send a message to her mother.
"He's fine, but his ribs are broken; he might need to recuperate for a period of time," Hal said, "I put a protective shield there; no one will be able to hurt him."
"What about Victor?" J'onn asked.
Diana opened her mouth. She knew that Victor only saved his life by fusing with the Mother Box, but this intelligence was something she learned from the Battleworld; another Diana introduced the Justice League members to her and mentioned it in passing. But explaining things related to the Battleworld was too complicated, so she said, "Victor might be hiding the secret of the thing they are looking for. I'm afraid he'll be caught."
And at this time, Arthur also returned, his face looking very bad too. Like Diana, he appeared weak and powerless, and kept coughing. Taking a punch from Steppenwolf, the best result was internal bleeding.
"Where the hell did that monster come from?! Don't tell me that's another official employee of A. R. G. U. S.! What exactly do they want to do?!" Arthur couldn't help roaring.
Diana closed her eyes and sighed, saying, "Sure enough, Doomsday was just a warning. Steppenwolf is stronger than him; it's very difficult for us to deal with him."
"Was Steppenwolf also brought over by A. R. G. U. S.?" Hal asked.
"No, if Darkseid wants to seize the Mother Box, he will come sooner or later. It's just that he came at this juncture; perhaps there is Schiller's hand in it," Diana said, holding her chest.
"Is there anything special about this time?" Hal still didn't understand, "Although our relief plan indeed didn't succeed, it didn't hurt us either. Doomsday was the same; although it took some effort, it couldn't be called hurting the muscles and bones. Arranging for Steppenwolf to take advantage of the situation at this time doesn't make much sense, right?"
"Perhaps, there is someone else taking advantage of the situation," Diana said, "You must be careful; if there is anything wrong, inform your teammates immediately. Do you understand?"
None of them refuted. The group returned to headquarters; almost everyone had no strength left, and some were injured. Everyone fell asleep as soon as they hit the bed.
However, this night was not peaceful. In his dream, Arthur saw a tsunami invading Amnesty Bay. His father and the townspeople were all submerged. He wanted to pick up the Golden Trident to control the seawater, but found that he was just an ordinary person, could only helplessly sink into the sea, and like the others, was painfully drowned.
Diana returned to the battlefield again. Soldiers fell painfully on the road of charging. A young soldier had his chest filled with shrapnel, looking at her with desperate eyes. That face blurred and changed, soon turning into her sisters on Themyscira. She wandered among the corpses, but didn't even know who the murderer was.
J'onn dreamed of a raging fire. His family struggled painfully in the fire, their skin gradually burned to charred black, running toward him in distorted postures, but on the way, they turned into charcoal. He lost himself in the endless painful wailing and crying.
Victor returned to the car accident scene again. Only this time he recalled more details; his mother's skin was peeled off bit by bit by glass fragments, her skull was shattered, brain matter and brain fragments splashed out, and then it was her chest cavity and arms. She turned into fragments before his eyes, and he was powerless.
When everyone woke up, they all felt an inexplicable panic. However, when they recalled it, they only vaguely remembered having a nightmare and didn't remember the specific content of the dream.
When they walked downstairs, they all saw the pale faces of the others, but they all thought it was caused by excessive fatigue from fighting yesterday. Each holding a cup of coffee, they sat down at the conference table. ===== CHAPTER 4384 =====
