Chapter 4580: Day of the Brightest (46)
"BOOM!!!!!"
After the massive sound came a continuous earthquake. The trembling of the earth made it hard for people to stand steady. Shiler and Deathstroke both fell to the ground. It wasn't until the tremors ended and the two climbed up that they realized Joseph was already gone.
"He ran quite fast." Shiler shook his hands and looked toward the window again. The bright meteor was already gone, but the entire city of Cairo had been awakened. The meteor had fallen in a southwesterly direction, and everyone was looking that way.
"That's the desert over there, right?" Deathstroke also looked out the window and asked.
The Nile River basin in Egypt is relatively fertile, but the further inland one goes, the more barren it becomes; it is basically vast stretches of desert with no decent cities. And the southwest direction of Cairo should also be desert.
"Let's go, let's take a look." Shiler took one last look at that mural. The light on the mural had already extinguished, looking plain and unremarkable, but it must have been the anomaly of the mural that attracted the meteor.
"This is truly a massive amount of trouble," Deathstroke said, "You didn't say there would be a meteor involved."
"And you didn't say your son was a superhuman who would go crazy targeting me because of you. If it weren't for him, I would have already shipped this troublesome thing back to the United States by now."
Deathstroke was speechless.
Deathstroke and Shiler came out of the museum. The moonlight tonight was very bright. At this moment, many citizens walked out of their homes, looking toward the direction where the meteor fell, all discussing something.
Not everyone saw the meteor, but everyone was certain that the incident did not occur in Cairo, but rather in some area on the outskirts of Cairo. The citizens' first reaction was that Cairo had been bombed; after all, the recent situation was not peaceful. But since the urban area was fine, it was unlikely to be an enemy attack. Could it be that the Egyptian authorities were testing missiles?
People were discussing it heatedly. Shiler and Deathstroke walked past them without attracting attention. Deathstroke got into the driver's seat of the car, and Shiler sat in the passenger seat. When the car started, the warm night wind blew in. Deathstroke reached out and turned on the car radio; the local channel was always playing Arabic-style dance music.
"It seems I owe you another favor." Deathstroke lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, exhaled smoke toward the window, and said with some emotion, "I have never seen this side of Joseph. It's magical, can you imagine? A few days ago he was still a baby who couldn't even walk, and now he stood up and said he wanted to protect me, and he almost succeeded."
"Yeah, by finding trouble for me." Shiler kept emphasizing this point.
"Isn't this what you wanted?" Deathstroke laughed and said, "You're not mentioning that you are the same person right now?"
Shiler was also somewhat speechless. He turned his head to glance at Deathstroke, then said, "How about I call him over to talk to you?"
"No, he is not as concise as you." Deathstroke shook his head, took another puff of his cigarette, and then said, "I don't need you to answer me either, you just need to listen. Of course, you might not be able to hear clearly at all; perhaps you can just sleep for a while."
Shiler seemed to have adopted his suggestion, folded his arms, leaned against the back of the chair, and closed his eyes for a nap. Deathstroke's voice kept echoing in his ears, mumbling and very hypnotic.
"I've thought a lot about what you said regarding social rules. I think you're right. That place, New Orleans, although the public security is much better than those coastal cities, the atmosphere is too conservative. We were outsiders to begin with, and I rarely go home all year round. Who could they rely on? If it were in the 19th century, that era when gunmen and desperadoes ran rampant, they might have already lost their lives. It is the law and social order that protected them."
"This destined that I could only appear before them as a good husband and a good father. They don't accept any other possibility. But lies will always be exposed; one day they will know what their father does. I have no way to defend myself; they will definitely be heartbroken and disappointed."
"They must have tried to understand me, understand how difficult it was for me to work outside, understand how hard I worked to provide them with a life of wealth without worries, and convinced themselves that there is no such thing as having the best of both worlds in the world—if you want money, you can't have companionship. And then when they find out that all of this is a lie, that so-called hard work is actually unscrupulous killing, they will naturally collapse."
"The key is that those moments when they tried hard to convince themselves will become ridiculous. Because only those who live within social rules, are subject to various restrictions, and can still strive to create a beautiful life for themselves and their families can be called hardworking laborers. For those who make money through illegal and criminal activities, no matter how hard they work, they deserve it. Not to mention that I'm not even working hard."
"In order to defend their existing life and order, they will deal with me. This stems from their hatred for me. But you presented another possibility. That is, when I fall into a crisis and my life is hanging by a thread, their love for me will prompt them to save me."
"How could they not love me?" Deathstroke muttered to himself in a low voice, "No matter what, we have spent so many good times together. In the yard, on the lawn, by the Mississippi River..."
"Of course I love them too. Although you said I have innate defects and many things are just acting. But people are always willing to believe what they believe. When I indulge myself in certain feelings, perhaps I also briefly possessed real emotions. There is no doubt that I love my family."
"Go apologize." Shiler muttered, "For your concealment, and for what you did by dragging him into this big trouble."
"Of course, I will." Deathstroke said, "And there's more. For example, I didn't follow his advice to stay away from you."
"That's not necessary." Shiler closed his eyes, turned his head to the other side, and his voice became weaker and weaker, as if he had already sunk into a dream, "You were not wrong about that."
When Shiler woke up, he felt like he had a very long dream, but he had actually only slept for a short while. He seemed to hear Deathstroke say something, but he had already forgotten it. When he woke up again, the car had already driven into the desert.
Some shadows swept across the horizon. When Shiler looked over, he felt somewhat familiar, but the car was moving too fast, and he couldn't see clearly. It wasn't until they got closer and closer that those shadows became larger and larger—those were the pyramids.
Shiler finally recalled, southwest of Cairo, isn't that the famous Giza pyramid complex?
Speaking of the Giza pyramid complex, many people might not have heard of it. But the Great Jin Zita of Giza is one of the pyramids in the Giza complex. If you haven't heard of that either, the "Sphinx" is squatting in front of the Great Jin Zita of Giza.
The Giza pyramid complex in the night didn't look terrifying, but rather added a bit of sanctity, perhaps because the moonlight was too bright tonight. The entire desert was illuminated silver-white like snow. Standing in the desert, every face of the pyramids was illuminated very brightly. Such straight and regular shapes didn't look like ancient Egyptian creations, but rather like products of modern industry, full of a supernatural sense of technology.
"This is my first time seeing the pyramids too." Deathstroke said, looking at the pyramid complex on the highland, and said with some emotion, "How the hell did the ancient Egyptians build this thing?"
Shiler also stood there and watched for a while, suddenly realizing: if the meteorite really hit the Giza pyramid complex, wouldn't they lose a pyramid forever?
"Damn it," Shiler cursed, "Hurry over and take a look!"
The two of them ran toward the center of the pyramid complex. But halfway there, Shiler stopped because he realized something was wrong. He turned back, and a sandstorm swallowed their car. It just disappeared like that, and there wasn't a single person here.
Deathstroke also reacted. Logically speaking, many people should have witnessed the meteorite falling toward the southwest. The huge sound and earthquake proved that the meteorite had already hit. Then someone must have come to check. As the most important tourist attraction in all of Cairo, the Egyptian authorities would be more concerned about the safety of the Giza pyramid complex than anyone else. If this were hit by a meteorite, it wouldn't just be a loss for Cairo or Egypt, but a loss for the entire human civilization.
This place should have already been surrounded by police and cordon lines, and those experts should have already rushed in. But as of now, there were only the two of them here, and their car had mysteriously disappeared.
"I told you this was a massive amount of trouble." Deathstroke said, "It seems we have been dragged into a magical event. Do you understand this?"
"I might be the one who understands this the least." Shiler said, "Otherwise we wouldn't have stepped into the trap so easily; I didn't even think in that direction."
However, neither of them were the type to complain. Deathstroke continued to walk toward the pyramids. As they walked forward, Shiler gradually felt something was wrong, and he said: "Don't you feel like we haven't moved forward at all?"
Deathstroke looked back at his footprints, but there was still a sandstorm blowing behind them, and the footprints from when they came were long gone. And the pyramids in front didn't get any bigger. This proved that their progress was ineffective, and they might have been walking in place the whole time.
"It seems this is a puzzle," Shiler said, "If we don't solve it, we will never be able to reach the pyramids, and we might not be able to leave either."
"Alright, have you figured out where the key lies?" Deathstroke was observing carefully, "I feel like these pyramids we see are a bit off. They look too regular. I don't know what the real Giza pyramid complex should look like, but I know these ones now might not be normal."
Shiler actually didn't know what the real Giza pyramid complex looked like either. Although he had been to Egypt before, he obviously wouldn't go sightseeing. Moreover, the experience of the pyramid trip wasn't good. Besides taking pictures outside, there was nothing to see, and inside it was narrow and cramped, making it very uncomfortable to tour. Better not to look.
However, this puzzle shouldn't have anything to do with the original Giza pyramid complex; those pyramids still standing on the horizon looked like they had some kind of pattern. What could it be?
Shiler didn't choose to move forward or backward; he walked to the side. Then he discovered that a part of the pyramids in the distance would move as he moved. Shiler moved to the left, and it shifted to the left; Shiler moved to the right, and it shifted to the right.
Deathstroke obviously also discovered the anomaly. Shiler moved to the left, and he moved to the right. As a result, a part of the pyramids also shifted with him. Obviously, this was a small game testing their tacit understanding.
"What do we two need to turn these things into?" Deathstroke asked, "Let them line up to welcome us?"
"Why not?"
So the two began to try. But in fact, this was not easy. Because some of these pyramids were fence-sitters; Shiler moved to the left, and it followed to the left; Deathstroke moved to the right, and it followed to the right. The two had to repeatedly adjust the positions of these fence-sitting pyramids to ensure they stayed where they were supposed to be.
"My God!" After taking another half-step too many, resulting in a misalignment, Deathstroke roared, "Why on earth are we playing desert crabs here in the middle of the night!"
"What do you have to be angry about?" Shiler looked at him and said coldly, "I have never seen such a stupid crab as you."
He took out his revolver. "Let's try one last time."
"And then you'll blow up the pyramids?"
"And then I'll blow you up." ===== CHAPTER 4581 =====
