Chapter 45: Dangerous Attempt
The world in a dream.
A branch of the Light of Redemption.
"I disagree!"
Olivia said solemnly: "Our Cult's strength is still too weak; it is not suitable to go on an expedition against another Mysterious organization!"
"I understand, I am just preparing to go alone!"
Lin bit her lip.
Ever since she learned the tragic news of her brother, she felt a void in her heart, replaced by the raging flames of revenge.
If she hadn't been so deeply corrupted by the existence above the Moon back then, and hadn't lost her sanity, she might have taken her brother and run!
"You can't go either; you are our Cult's Saintess and an important combat force."
Olivia's sigh seemed to contain vicissitudes and helplessness: "We wiped out the Black Sun Cult's vanguard, and they will certainly continue to send people. Diate is a city favored by our Lord; we cannot yield it to evil believers. We need to fight for it, and when the time comes, it will be revenge all the same!"
"What's more... if your brother is still alive, naturally the sooner we rescue him the better, but now... we can wait until we have grown stronger before we go to take revenge!"
"Stronger... revenge..." Lin's pupils seemed to regain some focus: "Thank you, Sister Olivia, I know what to do now."
"Sigh... I hope I can persuade her."
Olivia looked at Lin's back and shook her head bitterly.
She knew profoundly how difficult it was to advance on the Mysterious path!
This world previously had no Extraordinary power; to ascend, one required deeper knowledge of Occultism, more Spirituality, and even blood sacrifices!
Wanting to obtain all of this was accompanied by immense hardship and danger.
Especially since they walked upon the Mysterious path while trying to maintain their own sanity and free will, it was even more fraught with difficulties.
Bang!
Lin closed the door to her room.
"Olivia, thank you, but I can't wait any longer."
She muttered to herself and opened the window.
After the velvet curtains were drawn, one could see the desolate and dilapidated streets, with the crimson moonlight flowing through like water.
Lin's expression was solemn as she began her Prayer: "I beseech the Spirit of Falsehood wandering in the unknown, the Absolutely Neutral Existence, the Silent Observer..."
"... the symbol of free will, the only savior of the end times, the Supreme Light..."
She prayed continuously, but received no response.
This was normal; such existences rarely responded to believers, and their responses often carried extremely terrifying consequences.
And although the Spirit of Falsehood was relatively kind, it did not grant every request in every Prayer.
"It's too late..."
Lin looked out the window; above the velvet-like pitch-black sky, there was a crimson Moon.
It was like the most exquisite ruby, dripping with freshness, maintaining the most perfectly round 'full moon' form.
"According to the calculation of spiritual numbers... 12 o'clock tonight is the period when the Crimson Moon is most active, and it is also the most suitable time for believers to pray, communicate, and obtain power."
In other words, holding a Ritual at this time made it easier to attract the power of that terrifying existence above the Moon, or even the personal attention of its true body!
Lin looked at the wall clock; the hands had reached the 12 o'clock midnight position.
"For an Extraordinary to ascend and obtain stronger power, the simplest method is to obtain the favor of the Mysterious source on the path..."
"I do not worship the Moon, but I will beg the Moon for power..."
Lin was naturally a constitution easily summoned by the Moon; otherwise, she would not have lost control before.
Her original plan was to pray to the 'Spirit of Falsehood' at this spiritual hour tonight, and then, relying on its protection, look directly at the great existence above the Moon to obtain a Mysterious infusion and rapid improvement!
This was feasible; after all, she had done it once before!
Of course, this process was extremely dangerous, and if she had the 'Spirit of Falsehood' watching the whole time, it might be much safer.
But the Spirit of Falsehood did not respond to her plea, and such a day of spiritual numbers might not be encountered even once a year!
"I..."
Lin's body trembled, but she still moved her feet firmly, came to the side of the window, stared at the Moon in the sky, and knelt halfway down.
It must be said that even though Aaron preserved her free will, the path of this world was inherently biased toward corruption and madness.
Even the most normal Extraordinary had an extreme side!
Lin's eyes gradually became stained with a touch of crimson, and her thoughts wandered continuously, as if she had arrived above the clouds, embracing the sky, wanting to kiss the Moon.
Under her gaze, on the Crimson Moon, a Flesh Ancient Tree suddenly grew out of nowhere.
"So beautiful..."
Lin stared at the Flesh Mother Tree, feeling a beauty that transcended rationality!
Every branch and every line of It seemed to be divided by the golden ratio, even transcending the narrow knowledge of humans; any race or any life would be intoxicated by it, as if seeing the most exquisite work of art in the world!
It was a kind of... beauty that transcended concepts!
The look of obsession on Lin's face grew increasingly intense.
At this moment, a series of gibberish reached her ears; it was very soft at first, but quickly became harsh and shrill, as if one woman were whispering, or as if countless women were screaming in madness.
"Ah!"
Lin's ears exploded instantly, and she fell to the ground screaming. At the edges of her ears, blood vessels swelled and squirmed like earthworms... her hair stood up one by one, also becoming thick, like a ball of snakes coiled together by countless Black Snakes.
"This time's... corruption... is completely different from the last!"
Lin's consciousness had gradually become fragmented, with only one thought still echoing.
Countless madnesses were automatically arising from her heart, wanting to turn her into a bloodthirsty monster, to slaughter, to conquer, to give birth to countless offspring...
"Ah!"
A Weird cry echoed within the Baihuo Dasha.
"Oh no, it's Lin!"
Olivia, wearing pajamas, kicked open the door to Lin's room; looking at this scene, her pupils shrank to pinpricks.
Without hesitation, she waved her hands, and the air became filled with a large number of invisible threads.
"Kill me!"
Lin, who had already mutated more than halfway, had eyes filled with bloodshot veins; she did not resist Olivia's attack and spoke in a hoarse voice.
Streaks of thread bound her in place, but they could not suppress her mutation.
On the surface of her constantly swelling body, a layer of black suddenly emerged; these were tiny, virus-level insects that were crawling on the threads and gnawing at them rapidly.
Even though Lin was actively suppressing it, her Instinct had already begun to attack!
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Olivia quickly set up a Ritual:
"Spirit of falsehood wandering in the unknown, Absolutely Neutral Existence, Silent Observer... Your believer prays for you to cast your gaze down and expel the corruption for your believer!"
The candlelight dimmed, but nothing happened.
Olivia's heart immediately sank: "The Lord... did not respond..."
