Chapter 66: Memories of the Past

~7 min read 1,352 words

Memories of the Past

She should never have considered Baiqi time and again; she should have just killed that lowly Beastman directly.

She had been decisive her whole life, yet she stumbled only because of him, thinking such a lowly Beastman could not stir up any trouble.

Who would have known he actually had the audacity to harm her children again and again.

……

The Beastmen stayed in the Ice Cave for a while, and after Baipei confirmed that Baili and Yake were unharmed, she intended to take them back.

"Once I catch Lianxun, I will send a Beastman to notify you."

Baipei instructed Chaosheng, pulling Chaosheng up with deep meaning, her eyes filled with gratitude, "Sheng, thank you so much this time."

"This is all what I should do." Chaosheng's voice was faint and gentle, "We are a family, Mother."

"Good, good, good!" Baipei was moved and said the word 'good' three times; she looked at Baini, who was yawning but insisted on seeing her off, and could not help but laugh, "A-Ni, you truly found a good Mate."

Baini's consciousness was already more than half-swept away by sleepiness, but upon hearing praise for himself, Baini replied without a second thought, "That goes without saying."

"Sheng is a Mate I found myself, so naturally, she is the best in the entire ocean."

"Ha!" Baipei was amused; she had not expected that the marriage of her most worrisome child would be the one that worried her the least, "As long as you know, you must treat Sheng well in the future."

"I know!" Baini replied absent-mindedly; he had always been very good to Sheng.

Beside them, Baili's gaze dimmed slightly, and he said in a low, weak voice, "Mother, let's go first."

"Very well."

"Then we are leaving."

……

After a busy day, Chaosheng lay tiredly on her Shell Bed, smelling the faint fragrance, her mood calm and unruffled.

It was not just Baini who wanted to sleep; she wanted to sleep too.

Her eyes slowly closed, and her consciousness gradually blurred.

She stepped into a patch of white fog, and the long-lost land was beneath her feet.

"Strange girl!"

"Ugly monster wrapped in a headscarf!"

The little girl whose face was wrapped in a black headscarf cried sadly.

The teacher lied to her; the outside world was not fun at all.

"Stop crying, be good!"

"Grandma has candy here."

With the sweet lollipop in her mouth, the little girl felt the taste of candy for the first time.

Later, the girl grew up a little.

The girl went to find her teacher, but she was swindled out of all her money on the way.

She did not even have enough for the travel fare.

It was an old man who stopped his carriage and asked, "Where are you going, young lady? I can give you a ride."

The girl gave the address.

The old man used a kind and simple accent to tell her to get on the carriage, "Let's go, it's just on the way."

When they arrived, the girl asked the old man to wait for her so she could go find her teacher to get money for him.

By the time she returned, the old man had already left.

She followed the tire tracks to chase after him and discovered the old man had gone back; he was not on the way at all.

Later still, the teacher who adopted her died.

The Witch wanted to use her own power to help others; she saved people with all her heart and strength, even if it meant exposing her own differences.

At the beginning, those people were all very grateful to her.

But later, they gradually began to fear her; they feared the parts of her that were different from everyone else.

Until a wizard said she was a harmful demon, "She is currently bewitching you all, and before long, she will reveal her true face."

"At that time, you will all die."

A lie as clumsy as could be, yet they all believed it.

They tricked her into standing on the Magic Array carefully designed by the wizard, watching in despair as the haystack beneath her feet ignited.

They called her a demon.

The flames scorched her skin, burning away her short life.

"Hoo..."

Chaosheng woke up from the dream, beads of sweat the size of peas falling one by one, her eyes desolate.

"What did you dream of?"

"So afraid?"

Hearing this enchanting voice, Chaosheng looked at the black fog around her and realized she had arrived in Zhuche's space.

"Nothing."

Chaosheng lowered her eyes, looking at the intact skin on her hands, her fingers curling slightly.

Why would she have such a dream for no reason?

"Ha!" Zhuche sneered, "In a bad mood?"

"Yes." Chaosheng replied in a muffled tone, "By the way, I want Chunze Vine tomorrow."

She calculated; the time was almost up.

"You really know how to order me around."

Zhuche was both angry and amused; she was asking him for a favor, yet she couldn't even say something nice?

"I am in a very bad mood right now."

"Zhuche."

The dejected voice was light and airy; Chaosheng sat curled up, hugging her tail, her long hair trailing into the Black Filth behind her.

"When I ask you, you refuse to tell me."

"I want to go back now," Chaosheng said coldly.

Zhuche's bewitching face turned cold, and the swirling Black Filth rose by two parts, as if he wanted to keep this little Mermaid.

But what slipped out of his mouth was, "Suit yourself."

A black vortex appeared, and Chaosheng returned to her Shell Bed.

After tossing and turning on the bed, she still felt no sleepiness.

Chaosheng suddenly rose and swam toward the shore.

Cold white moonlight struck the layered surface of the sea; Chaosheng sat quietly on the Ice Shore, her fish tail soaking in the icy seawater, her gaze indifferent and lost.

She seemed to be at a loss for what to do.

A hole broke through the deep blue sea surface; Yinxu revealed his face and swam toward Chaosheng, unhurried and slow.

White fur floated on the water's surface, and his gentle voice was as soft as dripping water amidst the sound of the waves, "Do you want me to keep you company?"

Chaosheng looked at Yinxu in surprise, "Why are you here?"

"I saw you come up, so I followed you."

Yinxu propped his arms on the shore, then turned and sat down beside Chaosheng, his body still carrying the cold and damp aura from the deep sea.

The thoroughly soaked fur dripped water onto his defined abdominal muscles.

The blue was boundless; in such a vast world, it felt as if only the two of them remained.

Chaosheng looked at the moon hanging high and chatted casually, "Do you know how the Black Filth came to be?"

If it were in her previous world, the ocean might have been polluted by humans.

But in this world that only had oceans, where would pollution come from?

"It seems it has existed for several decades."

"I heard it from my mother and father, too."

"It was as if it appeared out of thin air."

"The first Beastman suddenly lost consciousness and went on a rampage; at the time, everyone just thought he had angered the Sea God."

"But after Beastmen began to die one after another, everyone realized it wasn't such a simple matter."

Yinxu said softly, his gaze looking at Chaosheng tenderly, "Why do you ask about this?"

"It's just..." Chaosheng suddenly reached out her hand and waved it at the moon, "I suddenly discovered that I seem to be the nemesis of this filth."

Through the gaps of her spread fingers, Chaosheng watched the divided moon, "I always feel it's a coincidence."

"Perhaps it is the Sea God who does not wish to see her people suffer."

"So she sent you."

Yinxu looked at Chaosheng intently, his tone earnest.

It was she who gave him his current life.

Otherwise, he would not have lived until now.
