In the previous installment, the Classic of Documents said that the two demons outside the cave wanted to deal with Sun Wukong. Sun Wukong said, I am the eldest on Huaguo Shan, the top hand, my abilities surpass those of Sun Wukong. On Huaguo Shan, my word carries weight, I have signing authority; O demon, even if your abilities are great, on Pingdingshan you are at most the second-in-command. How can that second-in-command compare to someone who can match the top hand? Sun Wukong advised: If you today release my second brother Sun Wukong and his master and fellow disciple, and give me a little red envelope, I will intercede for you before your superiors, letting you become the top hand, and you will soon become rich.

The second demon said, "Monkey head, do I have any red envelopes to give you? Even if I did, I wouldn't send them to your hand. If you get devoured by darkness on the way, who would I turn to? Although you are the top hand on Huaguo Shan, you are not a top hand on other mountains. When you come to our Pingdingshan to speak, does your word still not count? Your monkey kin and his master and fellow disciple—aren't they still being held captive in the cave? What can we do about it?"

Sun Wukong said, "O demon, you need not be arrogant; after I deal with you, you will no longer boast."

The demon said, "Your monkey kin are still being held by me in the cave, hung there awaiting to be steamed and eaten. You had better leave Pingdingshan now; if you don't, the fate of your monkey kin will be yours."

Sun Wukong, having heard the second demon's words, laughed and said, "O demon, who will win and who will lose is not yet clear. Let us ride a donkey and watch the performance; we'll see how it goes. Show whatever abilities and tricks you have."

The demon said, "If you don't reach the high mountain, you won't see the plain; if you don't give Old Grandson Sun a little color to see, you won't still believe this evil, right?"

Sun Wukong said, "O demon, stop nagging. Make your move. Use whatever ultimate techniques you have. I am waiting,"

The demon said, "You truly go down a dark path; you won't give up until you reach the Yellow River. Then I won't blame myself for being impolite toward you." As the demon said this, he leapt onto the cloud, took out the Red Gourd, opened the stopper, and aimed the mouth at Sun Wukong. The demon said, "O monster monkey of Huaguo Shan, listen. You are not seeking your second brother Sun Wukong and his master and fellow disciple, are you? I shout to you from the cloud; as long as you answer my call, I will fully agree to whatever conditions you propose."

At that moment, Sun Wukong saw the demon turn and leap onto the cloud, shouting at him from midair. He also did not delay, somersaulting onto the cloud and standing opposite the demon.

Sun Wukong said, "O demon, what are you shouting about for nothing? Do you think I'm afraid of you? If I were afraid, I wouldn't have come."

The demon said, "If you are not afraid, I will call out to you once; dare you answer me once?"

Sun Wukong laughed and said, "O demon, how you underestimate people. Even if you haven't called me once, even if you call me ten thousand times, I will answer ten thousand times. I, Old Grandson Sun, since chaos first split, when heaven and earth were opened, after Huaguo Shan gave birth to me, I have diligently trained true martial arts, visited famous masters, and cultivated all-around courage and ability. Later I also obtained the secret of longevity and the power of transformation—able to change with the wind, go to heaven and enter earth, subdue dragons and tame tigers, and cause great havoc in the Heavenly Palace. There is nothing in the world I cannot do. O demon, how could there be any reason for me to fear your call?"

The demon said, "Monkey head, let me also tell you how formidable the treasure in my hand is. My treasure is the Red Gourd that Laozi used, when he refined his internal elixir long ago, to hold the elixir. I stole it and made it the Mountain-Guarding Treasure. Whatever is placed inside it will, before long, turn into water and vapor……"
