Chapter 1113: 1084 Silent Tears

~7 min read 1,296 words

"Stop!" Zheng Ren instinctively shouted in a low voice.

Xie Yiren slammed on the brakes, and the Volvo's tires left a black mark on the ground.

Zheng Ren jumped out of the car, Su Yun stared for a moment, then jumped out as well. He didn't know what had happened, but seeing Zheng Ren's expression, he guessed there was an emergency.

The two ran straight toward the panicked crowd.

Someone shouted loudly; the two 120 stretcher attendants from the Emergency Department, who were wandering outside, saw this and rushed in at top speed to call for help.

As they drew nearer, Zheng Ren caught a glimpse of a white coat's corner through the gaps in the crowd. His heart sank—this was… a doctor?

He shoved through the crowd, his movements rough. He didn't have time to worry about that now; fresh blood spattered on the ground at his feet.

A deathly pale side profile appeared before him—it was Director Miao!

Zheng Ren's whole body stiffened; although it was a warm April spring, in an instant it felt like the depths of winter, his blood turning to ice.

Director Miao lay on the ground, his thigh twisted out of shape, a white shard of bone jutting through his trousers and exposed.

Zheng Ren froze for a moment, then instead of rushing over, he first glanced at the system panel.

The system panel's background was pale; the glaring red was rapidly fading, indicating that Director Miao's vitality was ebbing away, beyond rescue.

Moreover, the system listed twenty or thirty diagnoses, each one life‑threatening.

"Gurney!" Zheng Ren bellowed, not going for chest compressions.

"In the back."

"Deep venous puncture kit, fast!" Zheng Ren roared, anger mixed with… panic.

"Fluids! Syringe!"

The gurney's wheels squeaked anxiously as it was pushed out. The attendants pushing it nearly took off, and a little nurse followed, clutching a pile of emergency meds and a deep venous puncture tube.

"Su Yun, bring the chest bottle." Zheng Ren glanced again; the system diagnosis showed Director Miao's spine had no serious injury, so moving him should be fine.

Even if there were a problem, the Big Pig Trotter suddenly crashed—there was no time left.

"Notify the OR to prep for surgery!" Zheng Ren, regardless of who was present or who should lead the rescue, seized command without hesitation and shouted hoarsely.

They lifted Director Miao onto the gurney, while Su Yun quickly prepared the chest bottle.

Zhou Litao tossed over a sterile pack, and Su Yun caught it directly.

He tore open Director Miao's white coat; there was no time to retrieve the blade from its packaging. He applied slight pressure, punctured an opening, held the packet in his hand, pierced the skin, and the hemostatic forceps went in with a "puff," then he spread them slightly, and dark red blood gushed out.

Su Yun also skipped sterile procedure, simply using the forceps to clamp the chest tube and push it in; the nurse behind had just opened a bottle of saline, and Su Yun used the forceps to secure the tube, suturing and fixing it in place.

Zheng Ren knelt on the gurney, tore open the deep venous puncture kit, slipped on the sterile gloves inside, gave a quick disinfection, then with his right hand felt down the left side of Director Miao's neck; the puncture needle had already pierced skin and subcutaneous tissue, entering the subclavian vein.

The motion was simple and swift.

There was no time to secure anything; the gurney was already being pushed, and Zheng Ren first drew a tube of blood with a syringe.

Because of the massive instantaneous blood loss, Zheng Ren had to exert great force to draw out a thin stream of venous blood, which he handed to the nurse running behind him.

Where to send it, Zheng Ren didn't say.

He reached out, and a bag of saline was placed into his hand.

The deep venous puncture catheter had already been threaded into the superior vena cava; Zheng Ren held it with one hand and connected the infusion set to the saline bag with the other.

"Su Yun, grab the box!" Zheng Ren suddenly bellowed.

"Got it, I'll send it for sterilization right away, and I'll have Xiao Yi Ren go up on stage!" Su Yun didn't follow the gurney; instead, he pulled out his phone, began contacting the OR and Xie Yiren, then turned, took a shortcut, and sprinted straight to the operating room.

Zheng Ren knelt on the gurney, one arm raised high, hand clutching the saline bag. The saline streamed into Director Miao's superior vena cava, doing everything possible to sustain his most basic vital signs.

His other hand began tearing off Director Miao's clothing to perform a quick physical exam, so that if the Big Pig Trotter crashed, mistakes could be avoided.

On Zheng Ren's system panel, the red was rapidly fading; every minute, every second, his heart could stop and he would die.

The gurney, dripping blood all the way, vanished from Director Kong's sight.

He didn't give chase; after confirming it was Director Miao, he felt as if he had aged ten years in an instant, covered in dust and fatigue that wouldn't lift. His waist unknowingly slumped, and he coughed violently.

When the gurney disappeared from view, Director Kong shed two streams of hot tears down his cheeks.

The usually bold and meticulous Director Kong was gone; standing there was merely an old man, one of countless living people who now stood utterly alone and helpless.

……

The medical elevator had already been summoned; the gurney rode smoothly up to the fifth‑floor operating room of the inpatient department.

The operating room doors stood wide open; several anesthetists, OR nurses, and the head nurse waited anxiously at the entrance.

The families waiting for the surgery to end stared bewildered at the scene, unaware of what had happened.

"The deep venous puncture isn't sutured—be careful. Send him to the hybrid OR! Hybrid OR!!" Zheng Ren handed the IV to the OR nurse, gave a brief order, then sprinted upstairs like a fly to change clothes.

Su Yun had just finished changing into his clothes, one hand donning a sterile cap as he prepared to enter the operating room.

Seeing Zheng Ren rush in, Su Yun asked, "Any hope?"

"I don't know."

Having said that, Su Yun grabbed the silver‑white box and charged inside.

Zheng Ren felt a bit flustered.

Although during the recent procedure his practiced movements showed no sign of panic or error, it was a memory ingrained in his muscles. He didn't need to think—just a touch and he knew where the subclavian vein was, and puncturing it was something he'd done countless times in the system space, requiring no thought.

At this moment he began changing clothes; the shirt's buttons had been undone twice but wouldn't come loose. With time pressing, Zheng Ren stopped trying and simply tore the shirt off.

The constant clinking of buttons falling to the floor sounded like beads dropping onto a jade plate, somewhat chaotic.

Zheng Ren didn't hear any of it; he hurriedly changed clothes, one hand fastening a sterile mask as he rushed inside.

Director Miao had already been lifted onto the operating table; Zhou Litao and an Emergency Department nurse strained to pull the gurney out.

The gurney was soaked in blood; the pooled blood swayed with the gurney's motion, casting a faint dark‑red sheen.

Zheng Ren didn't see Zhou Litao greet him; he hurried straight into the hybrid operating room.

The red background on the system panel had nearly vanished; Zheng Ren felt a fire burning inside, truly wanting to roar.

But he said nothing, simply went to scrub his hands.

The truth of those days is quite regrettable.
