Chapter 2489: 2402 Radium Supplement
"Maybe he ate too much." Su Yun said, "This thing is an adult toy, not for kids to play with."
While changing clothes, Feng Jianguo heard Su Yun say the four words "adult toy," and a smile that all men understand appeared on his face.
"What are you thinking, Brother Feng?" Su Yun laughed and said, "I'm saying this kind of toy is dangerous."
"Just like the patient just now?"
"Yeah, the United States sees over 2,900 magnetic buckyball accidents each year." Su Yun said, "Hurry up and go to surgery; we still have to eat later."
After saying that, he glanced at Zheng Ren and unhappily said, "You too, coming to look at just a ruptured intestine."
Zheng Ren gave a simple, honest smile; he had already changed his clothes.
Upon arriving at the operating room, Quan Xiaocao was disinfecting.
"Boss Zheng, you're up for surgery." Quan Xiaocao said politely, using an affirmative sentence.
"Mm." Zheng Ren narrowed his eyes, expressing his goodwill, then went to scrub his hands.
"Brother Feng, you go ahead; I won't." Su Yun said, "It's a minor surgery, boring. Just because the boss trusts you so much, you insist on coming to watch."
"After the surgery, are you going to eat? Is the medical team having a group meal?" Feng Jianguo also went to scrub his hands, chatting casually.
"No, I recently revised a case report for Manager Zhou of the Emergency Department, and it was published yesterday in Xin Ying Ge Lan." Su Yun said, "Manager Zhou wants to treat us to a meal."
As soon as he finished speaking, Su Yun suddenly saw Quan Xiaocao's hand pause.
"Oh my, why are you so tense?" Su Yun chuckled, "You wouldn't also be hoping to treat everyone to a meal, would you?"
"I... I..." Quan Xiaocao, being timid, stumbled over her words.
"It's fine, we're all our own people; why be so formal?" Su Yun said, "Besides, it's not a big deal—just two articles."
Quan Xiaocao knew she was wrong; Yun Ge'er had helped her so much—how could she not even treat him to a meal?
Although Yun Ge'er seemed neither particularly emotional nor displeased, Quan Xiaocao's whole body went stiff. She did want to tell Su Yun about treating everyone to a meal, but every time she saw Su Yun speak, she became tongue-tied, and whenever she tried to bring up eating, her mind went blank.
Watching her disinfect like a robot, Su Yun laughed and said, "Xiao Cao, disinfect properly—be quick, it's not a big deal."
"Oh, oh, okay, Yun Ge'er." Quan Xiaocao began to panic.
After Feng Jianguo finished scrubbing his hands, he returned to lay out the sheets, while Zheng Ren simply put on his clothes.
Su Yun found it interesting; normally, senior doctors put on their clothes directly, while junior doctors are responsible for laying out the sterile sheets.
Yet right in front of us, Feng Jianguo started laying out the sheets as soon as he arrived; both he and our boss have tacitly accepted this, perhaps without even noticing it themselves.
However, Quan Xiaocao's gait drew Su Yun's attention.
"Xiao Cao, turn the corner!" Su Yun reminded.
If he hadn't reminded her, it would have been fine; but after the reminder, Quan Xiaocao's upper body lurched forward while her lower body forgot to walk, nearly causing her to fall in the operating room.
"What's up, Xiao Cao, are you trying to pull a scam?" Su Yun joked with a chuckle.
"Xiao Cao, scrub your hands and come up." Feng Jianguo said sternly while laying out the sheets.
"Oh oh." Quan Xiaocao hurriedly went to scrub her hands.
"This kid, everything's fine, just too pure." Seeing Quan Xiaocao leave, Feng Jianguo shook his head and said.
Su Yun knew Feng Jianguo was referring to Quan Xiaocao's two articles in Willow Leaf Blade; he smiled and said nothing.
Sitting to the side, I watched Zheng Ren establish pneumoperitoneum; the laparoscope lens went in, and with practiced ease found the "position"—the spot where the stethoscope is located.
"Should we rinse first?" Feng Jianguo asked.
"First clamp out the magnetic buckyballs." Zheng Ren said, "If we rinse, the balls will scatter and cause greater damage."
Feng Jianguo nodded.
Through the laparoscope's TV screen, one can see a series of openings on the intestinal surface, with various colored beads visible inside.
Just as shown on the X-ray image, the location makes no difference; within the screen's range, three intestinal rupture points can be seen.
"So much damage?" Su Yun exclaimed in surprise, "How many buckyballs did this kid eat?"
Opening the intestine, Zheng Ren began using forceps to pull out the multicolored magnetic buckyballs.
The 5mm magnetic buckyballs stick to each other strongly, but Zheng Ren is quite skilled with them. The rare-metal forceps aren't affected by the magnetism—one, two, three...
After continuously extracting more than thirty buckyballs, Su Yun was left dumbfounded.
"Is this kid eating buckyballs like candy?"
"They're magnetic—could they harm the body?" Quan Xiaocao asked softly.
"Ahem, Xiao Cao." Su Yun coughed twice and said, "Do you know the principle of nuclear magnetic resonance?"
"..." Quan Xiaocao suddenly didn't know how to perform the surgery anymore.
"Not necessarily." Zheng Ren, while doing the surgery, said, "Over a hundred years ago... in 1898, after Madame Curie discovered the radium element, this element was believed to be filled with a kind of miraculous power."
"Huh?" Quan Xiaocao stared blankly.
"Back then there were toothpaste, chocolate, drinking water, medicines containing radium, and so on." Zheng Ren, while clamping the buckyballs, said, "It was all the rage; everyone thought radium could activate cells' potential."
"Tsk tsk, Xiao Cao, don't you think the boss's talk sounds like today's many health-product ads? This sales model has never changed; if you weren't in medicine and studied it carefully, you'd surely get rich." Su Yun said with a laugh.
"Mm, the principle is roughly similar. People don't really understand some newfangled thing, but because it sounds high-end, they believe it—just like those nano shoe pads sold a few years ago."
"But radium..."
"Many people died because of it." Zheng Ren said, "EbenByers, an American millionaire in the 1920s–30s..."
"Too long-winded." Su Yun sat on a little round stool in the corner, legs crossed, pretending to forget the boss's original purpose in bringing this up, and began gossiping, "Back then it was called radium supplement."
"Radium supplement?" Feng Jianguo asked.
"It means supplementing radium. Moreover, top medical literature endorses it, with a paper claiming: radium makes male water lizards perform excellently in front of female water lizards."
"..."
"The producers of radium supplement claim that Radium God can provide endless energy, treat traumatic injuries, including ED." Su Yun said.
"I go... this..."
"That's quite reasonable; you're looking at it from today's perspective. In the past, many nobles and doctors treated tuberculosis with electrotherapy. Now we see it's utterly useless." Su Yun said, "So, technological progress is the foundation of human survival."
