Chapter 478

~7 min read 1,272 words

Su Yun was suturing skin on that side; Zheng Ren said something, turned, and left.

The patient's condition was very serious; Zheng Ren, as the surgeon and the commander directing the rescue, the Inpatient Chief, needed to communicate with the family.

Wearing an isolation gown, Zheng Ren left the operating room.

Director Pan stood in the hall where the family waited for the surgery to end; a nurse stood beside him, and a rescue box was placed at his side.

Worried that the patient's parents might meet with an accident, Zheng Ren sighed inwardly—alas, parents' hearts everywhere.

Seeing Zheng Ren come out, Director Pan didn't move but stared directly at him.

Zheng Ren blinked and made a success gesture with his right hand.

Seeing Zheng Ren's gesture, Director Pan finally exhaled, hurried forward and asked, 'How is it?'

His voice was very loud, like a great bell.

"Will send to ICU soon." Zheng Ren removed the sterile mask, smiled and said, "The surgery went smoothly, but the patient's injuries are quite serious; it's still uncertain afterward."

This is all routine; Director Pan is naturally skilled at it. Actually, his judgment is that the patient is unlikely to survive, so he gave a more serious warning.

When the patient's parents rushed over, hearing that rebar had pierced the body, they were all stunned dumb. Especially after hearing the neighbor describe the scene, the patient's mother collapsed from fright.

Alas, parents' hearts everywhere—who hearing it could bear it?

Director Pan, worried about an accident, after signing and completing admission procedures, directly brought the family to wait at the operating room door; he even called a nimble nurse to bring a rescue box along, fearing any mishap.

But unexpectedly, the rescue actually succeeded!

Director Pan was also very pleased; previously, he had encountered several similar incidents, and the patients all died.

Even he didn't expect Zheng Ren's rescue skills to be this high; he actually managed to save the patient!

"Go and tell the patient's family about the procedure," Director Pan said.

Zheng Ren glanced over; several women accompanied a woman with a pallid face, the woman slumped sideways in a red hard-plastic chair, her breathing becoming very weak.

The patient's father stood behind Director Pan, his hands and feet trembling incessantly, tears streaming uncontrollably. Yet he was oblivious, straining to widen his eyes, wanting to make his vision a bit clearer, to see Zheng Ren and Director Pan clearly, to hear their conversation clearly.

"You are the patient's father, right?" Zheng Ren nodded, took two steps forward, and said to the patient's father.

His voice had already given out; he tried to speak twice, both attempts failed, so he could only nod.

"The patient's rescue was successful, but he remains in critical condition; the dangerous period is about 3-5 days. If he gets through it, there should be no major issues. However, whether he will ultimately recover, no one can guarantee." Zheng Ren said.

Upon hearing Zheng Ren say the rescue succeeded, the patient's father finally saw hope, nodding repeatedly, tears scattering.

"The injuries are severe; a steel bar inserted through the anus damaged the rectum, colon, stomach, diaphragm, and lungs. Fortunately, the major blood vessels were unharmed, so he was saved. The central nervous system was unharmed; if he can survive the critical period, his future quality of life will not be greatly affected."

The patient's father nodded more frequently, the deathly look on his face gradually fading, a glimmer of hope appearing.

"Soon the ICU doctors will come to have you sign the critical condition notice; they will explain the details to you."

"Mm-hmm." The patient's father gave two strained hums to express his gratitude to Zheng Ren.

At that moment, the Operating Room door opened; Yang Lei ran out to call the Elevator. Holding the Elevator, Yang Lei made a phone call, then the gurney was pushed out. Chu Yanran huddled nearby, squeezing a rubber ball.

The patient was sent out of the Operating Room and went straight to the ICU.

The patient's parents followed behind, eyes filled with tears.

Only then did Zheng Ren let out a breath, glancing at Director Pan.

"Serious?" Director Pan asked.

"Very serious." Zheng Ren said.

"Not bad!" Director Pan slapped Zheng Ren's shoulder hard, with a smack.

Zheng Ren smiled and reported to Director Pan: "Tomorrow morning, we have a professor's patient, a Slavic woman; there's nothing special to watch out for."

"We could promote it, but it's no longer necessary." Director Pan said: "Only junior doctors need promotion; you're no longer a junior doctor."

"I will always be your junior doctor." Zheng Ren said seriously.

"Haha!" Director Pan felt somewhat pleased, finding Zheng Ren's flattery very satisfying.

But Director Pan knew that was just what Zheng Ren was saying.

In a haze, several months passed; Director Pan clearly realized that even if Zheng Ren wanted to stay, he could not agree.

This is a major matter of misleading someone's prospects.

The stage in Hai Cheng is too small to keep Zheng Ren.

"Right, Director Pan, I might need to go to the Medical University Affiliated Hospital soon." Zheng Ren, recalling Gao Shaojie's matter, reported to Director Pan.

"Huh? Flying Knife?" Director Pan asked.

"Yeah. Teacher Gao of the Medical University Intervention Department wants to learn TIPS Surgery; he watched one but didn't understand. I'm thinking of going over to do a few cases; if he can learn it, that would be best." Zheng Ren said candidly.

Talking with Director Pan is relatively hassle-free; there's no need to worry about many things.

Director Pan first froze for a moment, then understood, smiled and said: "And Di Du? When are you going?"

"I'm waiting for Director Kong's letter; I haven't been in touch recently."

"Maintaining contact is your future." Director Pan said, after a moment's hesitation, "Perhaps that place isn't your future either, but it's certainly one step along the way. Keeping in touch is always right."

If anyone else here heard Zheng Ren and Director Pan's conversation, they'd be shocked.

But Director Pan spoke naturally, and Zheng Ren wasn't modest either; some things are just there, cannot be denied.

"Take more care of this young patient." Director Pan said: "I see his parents are quite pitiful; how did this happen?"

"For critical cases, my level isn't as good as Su Yun's; I'll have Su Yun keep an eye on them." Zheng Ren said seriously.

With nothing more to say, they went to the second floor; Zheng Ren returned to Jizhenbingfang, while Director Pan went back to the director's office to oversee the Emergency Department.

In the office, Chang Yue and Zhong Min were busy.

With Lu Tianran temporarily assigned to the Emergency Rescue Service, their burdens grew a bit heavier.

However, there's nothing to complain about; it's the same everywhere. Nurses still have something to look forward to—those over thirty-five can avoid night shifts. But doctors have nothing to look forward to unless they give up their prospects, stop advancing, and retire to outpatient care.

Outpatient clinics see over a hundred patients a day, but the upside is no night shifts. Hence the competition for outpatient posts is fierce.

A few years ago, even a doctor who received notice of being transferred from outpatient back to the Inpatient Department directly took a cleaver to the dean's office.

Stay busy, it's the same wherever you are.

Zheng Ren finished his work, sat down to catch his breath, and prepared to go see that little patient in a bit.

Just as he sat down, a man and woman knocked on the door of the Jizhenbingfang office.
