Chapter 256: Your Husband Is at the Police Station

~4 min read 675 words

Chloe Reed: "..."

’The old lady sure is thinking far ahead,’ Chloe thought.

She and Walker Grant weren’t even divorced yet.

As for things like falling in love, she had no interest in that right now.

One relationship had already left her emotionally and mentally drained. How could she have the energy to start another?

After getting home, she watched some TV with the old lady for a while before washing up and going to bed.

In the middle of the night, her phone suddenly rang.

Drowsy and half-asleep, she answered without checking the caller’s name.

"Hello?"

"Chloe."

A deep, hoarse voice came through the phone, calling her name with a lingering, sorrowful tenderness.

Chloe Reed’s brow furrowed. "You psycho."

Then she hung up.

But a moment later, the phone rang again.

The calls were keeping Chloe Reed from sleeping, so she simply turned off her phone.

Blue Night Club.

Inside the dimly lit private room, empty bottles littered the table. Nathaniel Monroe watched Walker Grant with some trepidation as he stared, dumbfounded, at his phone.

He swallowed hard and said, "Walker, it’s getting late. Why don’t you... go home?"

Walker Grant kept staring at his phone, listening to the automated message that the user had powered off. He closed his eyes.

His sharp Adam’s apple bobbed, and in the dim light, his face seemed to be shrouded in shadow.

’Home?’

’What home did he have left?’

He put down his phone, picked up a bottle, and poured another drink.

Worried that something would happen if he kept drinking like this, Nathaniel Monroe tried to reason with him. "Walker, you’ve already had a lot. You should really go back."

"Tell me..." Walker Grant looked at him and asked slowly, "If I drink until I get a perforated stomach, like Miles Hawthorne did, will she come see me?"

Nathaniel Monroe: "..."

’Fat chance.’

’To be brutally honest...’

’Your wife would probably be happy if you just dropped dead...’

But he would never, ever dare to say that out loud.

His eyes flickered, and he said, "Actually... why don’t you just agree to your wife’s terms first? You two have years of history, after all. If you woo her again and show her your sincerity, maybe she’ll come back to you?"

"Impossible."

Walker Grant’s brow furrowed. "I didn’t even cheat. I still love her. Why should I agree to her terms?"

’She’s the one who keeps misunderstanding me.’

He raised his glass and downed the drink in one go.

Nathaniel Monroe: "..."

’So this is the deadlock.’

’One is dead set on divorce, the other refuses to let go.’

’Sigh. There’s nothing to be done.’

At three in the morning, Chloe Reed was jolted awake again by her phone. She was beyond irritated.

She had just fallen asleep not long ago, only to be woken up again. Anyone would be furious!

But when she saw the caller ID, she froze.

’110?’

She shot up in bed, brushed her hair back, and answered the call. "Hello?"

"Hello, is this Chloe Reed?"

"Yes, this is she." Chloe Reed’s heart pounded. "Is something wrong?"

The person on the other end said, "Your husband is here with us. He says he can’t find his way home. Are you able to come and pick him up?"

Chloe Reed: "..."

She cursed him up and down in her head.

She closed her eyes and said, "No, I can’t. I’m out of the country."

Then she hung up the phone.

’He’s insane!’

’That man has truly lost his mind!’

’And so shameless!’

’Going to the police station, of all places!’

Chloe Reed grabbed the blanket and pulled it over her head, completely overwhelmed with frustration.

At the police station, the chief looked at the man sitting in the chair—his handsome face flushed from the alcohol—and cleared his throat. "Mr. Grant, how about I arrange a car to take you home?"

Walker Grant didn’t speak, his eyes downcast. With his head slightly bowed, his entire being exuded an air... of someone who had been abandoned.
