Chapter 259: You’re Not Allowed to Go
Chloe Reed said, "Mr. Vance, I really need your help right now."
Her voice was hoarse and trembling. Preston Vance could tell something must have happened.
His tone was gentle. "Don’t rush. Take your time and tell me."
Chloe Reed took several deep breaths before telling him how her grandmother had suddenly fallen ill.
After hearing her out, Preston Vance replied, "Okay, I’ll figure something out."
A glimmer of hope entered Chloe Reed’s voice. "Mr. Vance, I’m counting on you."
She had only turned to Preston Vance because she was out of options.
He had offered to repay her time and again, and while she hadn’t taken him seriously before, now...
’Her grandmother was all that mattered.’
After the emergency treatment, her grandmother’s condition stabilized for the time being. Chloe Reed pulled herself together and returned to the hospital room.
Her grandmother hadn’t woken up yet. Chloe sat by the bed, grasped her hand, and pressed her forehead into the woman’s palm.
She prayed silently, her heart aching with sorrow.
Her grandmother’s hand was dry and warm, but it wasn’t gently stroking her hair as it usually did, nor was the old woman smiling kindly at her.
Chloe Reed’s eyes burned, on the verge of tears.
...
Preston Vance quickly contacted an expert and arranged for a private jet to fly him in.
He made no secret of it, and the Vance family quickly learned what he had done.
They had assumed Preston Vance brought the expert back to treat his own bedridden, paralyzed father. Who would have thought it was to treat the grandmother of some married woman!
Ivy Vance was the first to object, and she had someone bring the expert directly to their family home.
"Brother, Dad has been paralyzed for years. Since you managed to get such a renowned expert, why isn’t he treating Dad first?"
Mrs. Vance also spoke up. "Preston, don’t get too involved with Mrs. Grant. Walker Grant is not an easy man to deal with. If we get on his bad side, we’ll be in for more trouble than we can handle."
Preston Vance frowned. "He’s been paralyzed for years; a few more days won’t make a difference. Let Doctor Wade come with me first. He can come back and examine Dad after he’s done."
"No!" Ivy Vance vehemently objected. "Brother, have you lost your mind? You haven’t actually fallen for Chloe Reed, have you? What’s so great about her?"
The warmth on Preston Vance’s face slowly faded. "Last time, I would have died if it weren’t for her. Does a debt that great mean nothing to you?"
"That’s a completely different matter." Mrs. Vance wiped her tears and said, "You can compensate her in other ways, but you cannot get this involved in her personal life. You brought the doctor here, so where does that leave Mr. Grant? This is his responsibility, not yours."
Preston Vance was losing his patience. "Where is Doctor Wade?"
Mrs. Vance looked shocked. She clutched her chest. "Are you refusing to listen to me?"
Preston Vance said, "Have Doctor Wade come with me."
But Mrs. Vance swayed, looking as if she were about to faint. "Preston, if you dare take that expert to Mrs. Grant, I’ll drop dead right here!"
The Grant family had so many scandals; outsiders treated it all as a joke. But if the Vance family got involved, they would become the laughingstock instead.
’She would never allow that to happen!’
"Mom, are you alright?" Ivy Vance rushed forward to support her mother, then looked at Preston Vance. "Brother, Dad has been paralyzed for so many years, and Mom has been holding this family together all by herself. Her health isn’t good. We’ve all been waiting for you to come home, and now that you’re back, you’re going to upset her like this? Have you no conscience?"
