Chapter 278: Who?

~4 min read 651 words

The Owen Sterling before her was no longer the high-spirited man she first met; he looked utterly dejected.

A hint of resentment flickered in his eyes, but it vanished just as quickly.

Chloe Reed was silent for a moment before saying, "Have you tried changing companies?"

"I’ve already changed companies three times," Owen Sterling said with a bitter smile. "But it’s been the same every single time. That’s how I know I’m being targeted."

He looked at the food in front of him, then suddenly grabbed the liquor bottle and poured himself a drink. After downing a glass, he closed his eyes and said, "Chloe Reed, please let me see Walker Grant. I’ll apologize to him, I’ll do whatever he asks—just as long as he stops targeting me. I’ve had enough of this life."

Workplace bullying.

Owen Sterling was finally experiencing what workplace bullying truly meant.

He was capable, and his supervisors seemed to value his abilities, yet they relentlessly suppressed him, stole his opportunities, and drove him to the brink of collapse, making him doubt himself...

Chloe Reed frowned slightly. She immediately took out her phone and, while dialing Walker Grant’s number, said, "I don’t know the inside story on this. I’ll call him right now and ask."

Owen Sterling tightened his grip on his glass. "Okay," he croaked, nodding.

After three rings, the call connected.

"Hello, Chloe."

Walker Grant’s tone was very gentle.

He was always delighted whenever she took the initiative to contact him.

Chloe Reed’s tone was cold and her expression complex as she asked, "Are you targeting Owen Sterling?"

"Who?" Walker Grant replied.

That single word was enough to confirm that if Owen Sterling was being targeted, it wasn’t Walker Grant’s doing.

Chloe Reed’s assumption had been correct. Walker Grant didn’t even remember who he was.

She said, "It’s nothing."

Then, she immediately hung up.

Walker Grant stared at his phone, his sharp, handsome brows furrowing.

’Who was Owen Sterling?’

’And she had called specifically to question him about some guy he didn’t even know?’

’Well, he’d certainly remember the name now.’

Walker Grant sent a message to Dylan Finch, telling him to investigate this Owen Sterling. He wanted a complete file.

...

「Back in the restaurant.」

Chloe Reed said, "You heard him. What’s been happening to you isn’t his doing."

"How is that possible..." Owen Sterling’s expression was stunned. "Since I came to Breyburn, he’s the only one who’s ever been hostile toward me. I haven’t offended anyone else. I was even transferred because of him..."

’To be told now that Walker Grant wasn’t the one targeting him all this time... He simply couldn’t believe it!’

Chloe Reed pursed her lips, her gaze lowered in thought. ’Maybe I can help him now?’

’But in his current state, he doesn’t seem fit for work.’

After weighing her options for a long moment, she spoke. "If you still want to stay in this city, I can recommend a place for you. I guarantee you won’t run into this kind of thing again. But before that, you need to get your head straight. Why don’t you take a trip, clear your mind, and then come back to work?"

Owen Sterling slowly lifted his eyes to look at her. "Really?"

"Mhm," Chloe Reed nodded. "On one condition: you have to get back to your normal self."

"Okay," Owen Sterling said, a smile breaking across his face. "I trust you."

His expression returned to normal. He poured her a drink, then one for himself, and said, "Thank you for still being willing to help me. I’d like to propose a toast to you."

Seeing this, Chloe Reed didn’t refuse and picked up her glass.

But just then, her phone buzzed with a notification. She glanced at it instinctively, and her eyebrows raised slightly when she saw the message.

Still, she held up her glass and clinked it against Owen Sterling’s.
