Chapter 287: Miss Reed’s Ex-husband

~4 min read 667 words

The Reed family... it was getting more and more chaotic.

...

A conflicted look crossed Charles Reed’s face as he listened to Autumn Linton’s plan. "Are you sure you want to do this? That’s your mother."

But Autumn Linton said, "She’s never treated me like a daughter. She only cares about my grades, about how well I’m doing in school. She never once asked if I even wanted to study. Only Aunt Bowman cared about my health and was kind to me. To be honest, I used to wish Aunt Bowman was my birth mother."

Charles Reed’s expression grew even more conflicted.

Autumn Linton grabbed his arm. "She has a fortune. If this plan succeeds, it won’t just be the sapphire—all of her assets will be mine. Then our company will definitely be in a better position, and that bastard Walker Grant won’t be able to mess with us so easily. Do you really want to keep letting him push us around?"

Charles Reed’s resolve wavered. His face grave, he said, "I need to think this through. This isn’t going to be easy."

Autumn Linton nodded. "Alright. Take your time."

...

After chatting with her grandmother for a while, Chloe Reed left the hospital and sought out Daniel Hayes.

"Miss Reed, what’s up?" Daniel Hayes asked cheerfully.

Chloe Reed said, "I want you to investigate some things for me."

"Go on." Daniel Hayes’s expression turned serious.

"First thing. Eight years ago, during the earthquake in Brightwater Village, I rescued someone. I need you to find out exactly who I saved. It was too chaotic at the time, and I’ve always remembered it being Walker Grant, but now someone is telling me it wasn’t him." Chloe Reed took a deep breath as she finally said it all out loud.

Iris Yates had looked into it before but came up with nothing. Chloe had wanted to investigate it herself, but one thing after another kept her too busy to break away.

But now, with Zachary Bowman and Daniel Hayes helping her, she had seen what they were capable of. She was certain they could uncover something.

Daniel Hayes carefully took note. "Anything else?"

"One more thing. Look into Sunny Reed’s relationship with my parents. Find out whose child she was before she went to the orphanage, and what connection my parents had with hers." A flash of disgust crossed Chloe’s eyes as she spoke.

Even though she had moved on, she couldn’t help her curiosity.

’Looking at it objectively, why were Charles Reed and his wife so partial to Sunny Reed?’

’She wanted to find out the truth.’

Daniel Hayes nodded. "You got it. I’ve got it all down."

Chloe Reed gave him a small smile. "Thank you."

"Miss Reed, you’re being too formal. You’re Grandma Sutton’s granddaughter, which makes you my family. And family doesn’t stand on ceremony. Don’t say that again," Daniel Hayes said with a slight frown.

"Alright, I won’t." Chloe Reed nodded.

Daniel Hayes turned to leave, but just as he got into his car, his phone rang.

He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. The number looked familiar. ’Isn’t this the number that guy sent me?’ he thought. ’The one he said would contact me?’

"Yeah, who is this?" Daniel Hayes answered.

"Lucas Shaw saved your life, didn’t he?" The moment the person on the other end spoke, Daniel Hayes found the voice oddly familiar.

He scratched his head. "Yeah, he did. How’d you know? Did Whit tell you to contact me?"

"Yes." The voice on the other end was calm and measured. "Let’s meet. There are some things I need to ask you."

Daniel Hayes checked the time. "Alright. Where do we meet?"

The person gave him an address, and Daniel Hayes hung up and drove right over.

But when he pushed open the door to the private room and saw the person inside, his eyes widened in disbelief. He pointed at the man and said, "Aren’t you Miss Reed’s ex-husband?"
