Chapter 288: We’ll See If You’re Obedient

~4 min read 632 words

Inside the private room, on the sofa, a handsome man looked at him coolly. "Chloe and I aren’t divorced yet."

Daniel Hayes, however, retorted, "The hearing is just around the corner. The divorce is just a matter of time."

He swaggered in and sat down directly across from Walker Grant. "So you know Whit. What terrible taste he has, tsk tsk!"

Walker Grant remained unfazed by the provocation. His jet-black, almond-shaped eyes watched Daniel coolly. "Are you responsible for protecting Chloe now?"

"That’s right. What of it? You got some pointers for me?" Daniel Hayes watched him, wondering, ’Why did he want to see me?’

Walker Grant’s voice was placid, every gesture radiating a refined, aristocratic grace. As he looked at Daniel Hayes with indifference, an invisible pressure began to fill the room, making one’s heart feel inexplicably heavy.

"I don’t care who you work for. Since you’re protecting Chloe, you will protect her with your life. And one more thing, you’re to tell me everything that happens around her."

Daniel Hayes felt the pressure, his heart tightening for a moment, but he still retorted, "And why should I listen to you?"

"Lucas Shaw transferred the favor you owe him to me. So, you will listen to me." Walker Grant’s voice turned colder. "I won’t hurt her, and I won’t allow anyone else to hurt her."

Daniel Hayes clicked his tongue. "You’re pretty full of yourself, acting like you’re some devoted lover. If that’s true, why is Miss Reed divorcing you? Was all that devotion just a sham?"

"That’s between me and my wife." Walker Grant’s tone became even colder.

’This Daniel Hayes... he just keeps provoking me.’

’But he’s the one Lucas Shaw recommended. He should be trustworthy.’

Daniel Hayes took out his phone and dialed Lucas Shaw’s number. "Hey, Whit."

"Daniel, have you met Walker Grant yet?" Lucas Shaw’s teasing voice came through the line.

"I have. What’s going on? You’re telling me to listen to him?" Daniel Hayes demanded, his brow furrowed.

"Uh-huh. Listen to him for now, but you can be selective about it," Lucas Shaw said with a smile in his voice.

Hearing this, Walker Grant frowned.

"Alright, I get it." Daniel Hayes laughed, finally feeling a sense of relief.

"Walker Grant." It was as if Lucas Shaw knew he was there, calling him out by name. "Daniel Hayes has his own way of doing things; you can’t interfere. He’s not your bodyguard. He’s not just protecting Chloe Reed because I told him to—he’ll listen to Chloe herself above anyone else. Her grandmother sponsored him when he was growing up. That’s a debt of gratitude none of us can compete with. So, you can give up on whatever you’re scheming."

For once, he was being serious. "If you really love Chloe Reed, then clean up that mess with Sunny Reed for good."

With that, he hung up the phone.

Daniel Hayes chuckled lightly. "Whit is a reasonable guy, after all. Mr. Grant, your usual routine won’t work on me. However, out of respect for Whit, I’ll give you updates on her when I see fit."

A shadow fell over Walker Grant’s face, and his voice turned colder. "If you won’t work for me, why should I keep you by her side? Just to cause trouble for myself?"

The smile on Daniel Hayes’s face faded. "You want to replace me?"

Walker Grant pulled out a cigarette and lit it. The ember flared, and thin white smoke slowly curled upwards.

His eyes grew even more remote. "That depends on whether or not you’ll listen."

The smile on Daniel Hayes’s face vanished completely. "If you were that capable, why would you need to ask Whit for help in the first place? Mr. Grant, I don’t believe you can replace me."
