Chapter 913: Leader, where are you going at midnight?

~7 min read 1,325 words

Midnight.

0:37 a. m., an upscale residential complex in Wuzhou.

The sudden ringing of a phone woke Zheng Congwen, who was dreaming of enjoying three wives and four concubines. In the dead of night, that ringtone was truly piercing.

"Who the hell is calling at midnight?"

Zheng Congwen rubbed his sleepy eyes, picked up the phone, and saw an unknown number with no location displayed, instantly fueling his anger.

Damn it!

Disturbing someone's spring dream is unforgivable!

Zheng Congwen hit answer and snapped, "Are you blind? You don't even check the time when you call… What did you say? Who are you?! Hey…"

He hadn't finished his tirade when Zheng Congwen felt as if struck by lightning, his upper body jerking upright.

His face could only be described as terrified.

On the other end was a man's voice, saying only two sentences.

One was—"Get out fast!"

The other—"They've come to get you, and you're still sleeping!"

He said that and hung up.

Zheng Congwen stared for a few seconds, then, after regaining his senses, hurriedly got out of bed and fumbled with his clothes. He put on his base-layer striped T‑shirt inside out, the collar a bit tight, but he didn't have time to worry about that.

His wife, also roused, asked groggily, "Old Zheng, where are you going at this hour?"

"Something came up at the bureau; I'll take care of it."

After decades of marriage, Zheng Congwen had never told his wife half the truth. Tonight, with his life and death at stake, he was even less likely to spill the beans.

After dressing, Zheng Congwen barefoot dashed to the study.

He quickly opened the metal safe, shoved the passport, overseas bank cards, and several bundles of cash into his briefcase.

His wife came after him, saw his state, and her face changed: "Old Zheng, what on earth is going on?"

"Go back to sleep!"

Zheng Congwen replied coldly, grabbed his bag, and rushed out.

His wife chased him to the door: "Your shoes! You haven't put on your shoes!"

Zheng Congwen looked down and belatedly realized he was barefoot. He didn't have time to be picky, slipped on a pair of leather shoes, and ran out.

The elevator was too slow, so he bolted into the fire escape and ran all the way from the twelfth floor to the basement in one go.

He burst into the underground parking garage.

He got into the Land Rover.

He stomped the accelerator and the engine roared!

At that breakneck speed as he shot out of the parking spot, if it weren't for the right‑side fender being gouged hard by a pillar, you'd think he was a top‑tier race driver.

He no longer cared how much damage that scrape had caused.

Now his mind held a single thought: Heaven won't give him face—if it says the sky will change, it changes! So what? My fate is mine, not Heaven's! Try to catch me—no way!

From the parking space in the underground garage to the lot exit, it took only seven seconds!

Once he got on the expressway, he could shake off the danger.

After the residential complex's gate lifted, Zheng Congwen floored the accelerator, locking the pedal to the floor and surged forward at full speed.

Just as he cleared the gate, a black off‑road vehicle suddenly came from the front.

Straight on.

It blocked the exit dead center.

Zheng Congwen slammed the brakes in fright, the raging beast coming to an instant halt—their front bumpers only ten centimeters apart, almost kissing.

Had he reacted half a beat slower, he would surely have smashed head‑on.

"Damn!"

Zheng Congwen blasted the horn: beep—beep—beep—

Signaling the other driver to yield.

But the black off‑road ahead didn't budge; Zheng Congwen hammered the horn again, and the other finally began to back up.

Zheng Congwen thought the way was now clear.

He was about to shift into gear and go.

But the other stopped halfway back, refusing to yield and switching on its high beams; the blinding light shot at him, making Zheng Congwen unable to keep his eyes open.

"Damn!"

"Damn it!"

"Who the hell doesn't have eyes!"

Zheng Congwen's fury shot up to his head in an instant.

He jumped out, stormed to the off‑road vehicle, raised his fist and smashed the window: "You blind?! Who told you to park in the middle of the road? Move it, asshole! Damn it! You've got no manners whatsoever…"

He hadn't finished his tirade when the window slowly rolled down.

A familiar, harmless, innocent smile appeared. Zheng Congwen's cursing cut off, his mood turning extremely complicated.

The driver blocking the road turned out to be that bastard Gao Yicheng.

"Y‑y‑leader?! How can it be you?!"

Gao Yicheng seemed to finally grasp the situation.

He poked his head out, lounging against the car door with a half‑smile, half‑surprised look that begged for a beating.

Zheng Congwen snapped: "Get the car moving, now!"

"Leader, I really don't want to keep the car stopped—it just died out of nowhere and won't start; I don't know what's wrong." Gao Yicheng wore an innocent expression.

After hearing this, Zheng Congwen only wanted to give him a big slap.

Damn it!

This bastard still doesn't live in this residential area—what is he doing running over here in the middle of the night? Did he hear something and deliberately come to block my way?

After thinking it over, Zheng Congwen felt he probably hadn't guessed wrong.

I suspended this bastard's job, and he surely suspects me! Now the tides have turned; this bastard definitely came specially to trip me up!

Thinking of this, Zheng Congwen's face darkened with anger.

He warned Gao Yicheng again: "Stop pretending to be crazy and stupid here, move your car quickly!"

"Leader, my car really broke down—don't believe me, come try it yourself." Gao Yicheng opened the door, got out, and gestured for Zheng Congwen to get in.

Zheng Congwen peered inside the car—damn, it's actually a broken manual-transmission vehicle!

To clear the obstruction as quickly as possible.

Zheng Congwen steeled himself, got in the car, stepped on the brake, and turned the ignition key. The whole sequence of operations was done in one go, the car started smoothly, but the body shook violently.

This broken car was like a seventy- or eighty-year-old man, coughing and wheezing with every shudder.

It hadn't shaken a few times before stalling again.

Zheng Congwen tried repeatedly four or five times; each time the ignition worked fine, but without exception, the car would shudder and then stall with a sputter, making it impossible to drive normally.

"Leader, I'm not lying to you, am I? It's really not that I want to block your way—the car just won't work." Gao Yicheng put on an innocent look again.

Zheng Congwen's face alternated between green and white from anger.

He released the handbrake and shifted into neutral.

He got out of the car and ordered Gao Yicheng: "Today you have to push this broken car away, even if you have to! Hurry up! If you delay my business, watch out—I'll make you regret it!"

"Leader, why are you rushing out in the middle of the night?" Gao Yicheng smiled, unfazed, delighted to see Zheng Congwen desperate and jumping through hoops.

Zheng Congwen glared angrily: "What's it to you? When did it become your business to interfere? Not sleeping at home at night, you came here to pick a fight, right? Hurry up and push the car away!"

Sure.

In the midst of chatting and laughing, Gao Yicheng immediately rolled up his sleeves and pushed hard on the front of the car.

The car didn't budge an inch!

Gao Yicheng turned back with a helpless look: "Leader, I can't move it."

"Bastard! Can't move it, huh? Fine—you wait for me!" Zheng Congwen turned and got back into his own car, started it, floored the accelerator, preparing to smash a path through.
