Chapter 914: Furious Chase
Zheng Congwen got back into the car and pressed the accelerator to the floor.
The Range Rover let out a dull roar, like an enraged beast, and lunged straight at the battered secondhand off‑road vehicle ahead.
Gao Yicheng's pupils shrank in fright; he threw himself sideways in a roll and barely dodged.
"Bang!!"
The huge blast exploded at the residential complex's gate in the dead of night.
Gao Yicheng's battered off‑road vehicle, snatched from a secondhand market, was shoved backward dozens of meters—until it was driven into the foul ditch by the roadside and flipped wheels‑up.
"Holy shit! You actually hit it!"
Gao Yicheng climbed up from the ground, brushed off the dust, stared at the overturned wreck in the ditch, then glanced at the Range Rover that had already charged onto the road, his eyes bulging with rage.
"Zheng Congwen! You damn well pay for my car!"
Gao Yicheng hurried after him, but two legs can't outrun four wheels; the Range Rover drove off after the crash, leaving only its taillights fading into the distance.
Just then a passing private car came by.
Gao Yicheng didn't even have time to curse; he rushed into the middle of the road and forced the private car to stop: "Pull over! Police business!"
The driver inside obviously hadn't heard his shout.
He slammed on the brakes.
He barely managed to stop the car in front of Gao Yicheng, missing him by a hair's breadth.
The driver poked his head out.
He shouted angrily: "You're asking to die, huh? If you don't want to live, go jump in the river—don't drag me down…"
"Police business!"
Before the driver could finish his tirade, Gao Yicheng flashed his police ID. Although he was suspended pending investigation, he still carried it with him.
Without giving the driver a chance to examine the ID,
Gao Yicheng already grabbed the door, flung it open, and yanked the driver out of the car.
The driver stared, bewildered: "Who the hell are you? Can cops just do whatever they want? This is highway robbery—watch out, I'm gonna sue you…"
"I'm Gao Yicheng of the City Bureau's Criminal Investigation Detachment, and I'm requisitioning your car!"
Gao Yicheng flashed his ID again.
This time the driver clearly saw the name and unit on the ID and froze: "You can really commandeer a car like that? If I don't agree…"
"Someone as upstanding as you—five loves, four beauties—would never refuse to cooperate with police work. Don't sell yourself short!"
In the midst of speaking, Gao Yicheng had already shut the door and shifted gears.
The driver grew more baffled: "Five loves, four beauties, me? …Brother, honestly, you've got good taste. But… please get out—I've got a date with my girlfriend tonight…"
"Thanks—come to the City Bureau tomorrow to pick up the car; Mayor Lin will compensate you with a new one!"
Gao Yicheng stomped the accelerator and shot into the vast night, leaving the driver brother standing in the exhaust, dazed and speechless.
Mayor Lin, who was at home cuddling his sweet‑but‑dim lover asleep, would probably also be speechless if he knew he'd lose a new car even in his sleep.
……
1 a. m., the suburban expressway.
Zheng Congwen welded the accelerator to the floor; the Range Rover surged forward like a mad thing. The speedometer needle had already jumped to 180, and the streetlights outside blurred into a streaking band racing backward.
He glanced in the rearview mirror.
A car was closing in behind him—a white private vehicle.
It was going very fast.
Zheng Congwen narrowed his eyes; even guessing with his toes, he knew it had to be Gao Yicheng catching up—who else would speed like a maniac in the city, blowing through red lights without stopping?
"Damn it!"
"This bastard really won't quit!"
Zheng Congwen gritted his teeth in anger and stomped the accelerator again; the speed quickly hit the limit, the Range Rover began to sway, and steering grew tricky.
But the white private car kept drawing nearer.
"Damn it!"
"Does that bastard have a death wish?"
Zheng Congwen glanced again in the rearview mirror—only to see the white private car already hugging his bumper, starting to overtake on the left.
"You trying to force me to stop?"
"Dream on!"
Zheng Congwen wrenched the steering wheel, swinging the car sideways to block the left lane.
The white private car was shoved back behind him.
But soon enough,
it shot up from the right, and the two vehicles drove side by side.
Gao Yicheng rolled down his window and shouted at the driver: "Chief! Why are you flying like this? Are you rushing to be reborn?"
"!!!"
Zheng Congwen ignored him and kept accelerating.
Gao Yicheng's car also sped up.
The two cars raced neck‑and‑neck on the expressway, like two beasts testing each other's strength.
Up ahead lay a bend.
Zheng Congwen eased off the throttle, preparing to take the curve.
But Gao Yicheng suddenly gunned it, his car lunging hard into the Range Rover's flank.
"Bang!"
The Range Rover swayed slightly, almost losing control.
Zheng Congwen gripped the steering wheel tightly, stabilizing the car: "Damn it!" Just as he steadied the wheel, Gao Yicheng slammed into him from the side again.
"Bang!"
Another hit.
The Range Rover was knocked toward the guardrail, scraping off a large patch of paint.
Zheng Congwen clung to the steering wheel, the car scraping along the guardrail for dozens of meters, sparks flying everywhere.
Gao Yicheng pulled up again, preparing for a third collision.
Zheng Congwen suddenly stomped the brake; Gao Yicheng's car shot past. Zheng Congwen seized the chance to accelerate, swinging from behind to the front, blocking Gao Yicheng's path.
The two cars chased each other on the expressway, trading blows, danger lurking at every turn.
1:47 a. m.
Expressway exit.
Zheng Congwen glanced at the sign; the highway entrance lay ahead.
Once on the highway, his chances of shaking off Gao Yicheng would increase greatly; on the highway, that cheap white private car definitely couldn't outrun the Range Rover.
But Zheng Congwen hesitated, afraid to enter.
Since that bastard Lin Dongfan had sent Gao Yicheng to watch him, it showed Lin Dongfan had anticipated his escape and would surely have alerted the highway police to set up a checkpoint.
Getting on the highway now would be nothing short of walking into a trap!
Having thought this through, Zheng Congwen wrenched the steering wheel and turned onto a side road. This side road led to the countryside, with no streetlights and poor condition, full of potholes.
But in Zheng Congwen's view, taking the rough country road played to the Range Rover's advantage.
The Range Rover plunged into the darkness.
Behind him, the white private car also turned in.
The two cars sped down the dark country road, their headlights like two frantic fireflies, flickering in the night.
2:00 a. m.
The two cars, one behind the other, entered an unnamed country road.
Zheng Congwen no longer knew where he was; all around was pitch black, only the headlights illuminated a short stretch ahead.
He glanced at the rearview mirror; the white private car was still behind him.
"Damn it!"
"You just won't quit!"
A sharp turn lay ahead; Zheng Congwen slowed to navigate it.
At that very moment, the white private car suddenly lunged from the side, slamming hard into the Range Rover's rear—a reckless, all‑out collision.
"Bang!!"
The Range Rover instantly lost control, spinning off the road and nose‑diving into the roadside rice field, mud and water spraying over two meters high in the darkness.
The Range Rover rolled twice in the rice field.
Wheels pointing skyward.
It finally lost power.
Zheng Congwen hung upside down in the driver's seat, his face covered in blood.
As he struggled to undo his seat belt, the car door was yanked open from outside.
Gao Yicheng poked his head in, looked at him, and smiled: "Boss, what are you doing out here in the middle of the night… going for a swim? Your swimming's no good—did you drown? Want me to give you a hand?"
"!!!"
Zheng Congwen glared at Gao Yicheng, saying nothing, his mind full of how to deal with that bastard Gao Yicheng.
