Chapter 915: I may have no authority, but I have guts!
When the car door was pulled open, Zheng Congwen was still hanging upside down inside the car, struggling. Gao Yicheng stuck his head in, saw his face covered in blood, and grinned with pleasure.
"Leader, this pose is quite unique, have you practiced it?"
"You fucking lunatic!"
Zheng Congwen glared angrily at Gao Yicheng, his mind never idle, constantly thinking about how to escape tonight's predicament.
Gao Yicheng reached out to undo his seat belt.
"Don't move, I'll get you out first. You're bleeding from the head; if you lose too much blood and kick the bucket, I can't afford to compensate."
This time Zheng Congwen didn't struggle, meekly accepting Gao Yicheng's rescue.
Mainly because hanging upside down in the car felt awful.
This also wasn't conducive to escape.
The seat belt's buckle was finally undone by Gao Yicheng; Zheng Congwen fell, hitting the car roof, and let out a muffled groan from the pain.
Gao Yicheng dragged him out of the car.
Zheng Congwen plopped onto the muddy ground, soaked through, blood from his head trickling down his face, looking as miserable as a drowned dog.
But his eyes remained icy cold: "Gao Yicheng, do you even know what you're doing?!"
"I know. Rear-ending, I take full responsibility. When the traffic police arrive, we'll handle it however they decide." Gao Yicheng stood before Zheng Congwen, took out a cigarette and lit it.
Zheng Congwen snorted angrily: "Rear-end? You motherfucker, you call this a rear-end?!"
Gao Yicheng put on an innocent face: "What else? I just didn't brake in time and accidentally bumped your rear. If that's not a rear-end, what is?"
!!!
Zheng Congwen's gaze was icy cold, like a knife; he wished he could stab Gao Yicheng on the spot.
Damn it!
I never realized before that this bastard Gao Yicheng is actually a master at pretending to be crazy and acting foolish.
Zheng Congwen composed himself, then struck a leader's pose, angry: "Gao Yicheng, I'm the Municipal Bureau Political Commissioner! You're a suspended deputy brigade commander—who gave you law enforcement authority? How dare you block me!"
"Leader, the way you put it..."
Gao Yicheng scratched his head.
He put on another innocent look: "What's the point of blocking you for no reason? I originally wanted to talk to you about reinstatement, and maybe flatter you a bit. Who knew my broken-down car wouldn't cooperate and got in your way. You shoved my broken car into the ditch, and I wasn't angry—it was my fault, truly. I caught up intending to apologize and make amends, but ended up rear-ending you instead. That's all there is to it; I really didn't mean to."
"Stop pretending to be crazy and foolish with me! You're just blocking me!"
Zheng Congwen's eyebrows shot up in anger, his eyes blazing.
Gao Yicheng spread his hands: "Leader, if you insist on seeing it that way, I really can't help it. Anyway, I did rear-end you—decide how to handle it. Or should we wait for the traffic police?"
!!!
Zheng Congwen sucked in a breath of cold air to the depths; nothing is more sorrowful than a heart dead.
Wait for the traffic police?
Damn it!
If the traffic police come, will Lin Dongfan's people still be far off? Damn! You're pulling all these tricks just to hold me back, waiting for the Provincial Department folks to come arrest me, aren't you?
Zheng Congwen, seething with anger from his dantian: "Gao Yicheng, you've been suspended! You have no law enforcement authority now, and certainly no right to stop me!"
"Leader, am I enforcing the law? How would I not know?"
Gao Yicheng put on another clueless look.
He reiterated the car talk: "I'm just an ordinary civilian now; I accidentally rear-ended you while driving. What does this have to do with law enforcement? Why don't you give me a legal primer— which law says I can't rear-end?"
!!!
Zheng Congwen was so choked he couldn't speak; the ten thousand grass-mud horses in his heart were already galloping and neighing.
Gao Yicheng added: "Rest assured, when the traffic police arrive, I'll accept the penalty—deduct points, pay compensation. You're a big leader; I won't let you lose out."
!!!
Zheng Congwen's face alternated between green and white.
He stared at Gao Yicheng for a few seconds, then lowered his voice: "Gao Yicheng, let's be frank—let me off tonight, name your terms, how much money?"
Gao Yicheng blinked: "Leader, you mean... settle this privately?"
"One million, enough?" Zheng Congwen fixed his gaze on Gao Yicheng.
Gao Yicheng grinned: "One million? Leader, you're testing me?"
Zheng Congwen gritted his teeth and threw out another number: "Two million!"
"Leader, I didn't expect you to be such a tycoon." Gao Yicheng took a puff of his cigarette with a light smile, showing no intention to compromise.
Zheng Congwen's face darkened: "Five million! Gao Yicheng, five million would feed your family for a lifetime! Think about it—what's your monthly salary? Don't be ungrateful!"
"Leader, I don't like hearing that." Gao Yicheng stared at Zheng Congwen, neither humble nor arrogant: "You look down on people? My salary may not be high, but it's enough to support my wife and kids."
"If that's your stance, there's nothing to discuss?!"
Zheng Congwen's gaze grew more venomous, his tone and demeanor increasingly icy.
Gao Yicheng did not answer that question.
He patted the mud off his buttocks, turned back to the car to look for his phone: "Stay there, don't move—I'll call an ambulance. That head wound of yours looks grim to me."
!!!
Zheng Congwen stared at Gao Yicheng's back, his gaze growing colder, his teeth clenching tighter.
In a flash, murderous intent surged!
Zheng Congwen instinctively reached for the nearby object—a hard stone on the field ridge, about the size of a fist, with sharp edges.
While Gao Yicheng had his back turned.
Zheng Congwen picked up the stone, crept two steps closer, and, taking advantage of Gao Yicheng's lack of vigilance, slammed it hard into the back of his head.
Ugh!!!
Gao Yicheng let out a muffled grunt, his whole body lunged forward and he fell into the rice field.
Muddy water splashed everywhere.
After getting the upper hand, Zheng Congwen did not rush forward to continue attacking! He threw away the stone in his hand, turned and sprinted off, running wherever it was dark.
Gao Yicheng struggled to climb up from the mud, his head spinning badly.
He shook his head hard, but his vision remained blurry. Whatever was seeping into his eyes—blood or mud—made them a little blurred.
"Damn!"
"You actually dared to play a sneak attack on me!"
Gao Yicheng pulled out the undershirt inside, wiped his eyes clear; the surroundings were pitch black. Fortunately his ears weren't deaf, listening to the sounds around, he could also determine Zheng Congwen's escape direction.
Gao Yicheng stepped forward with his legs and stumbled after him.
His foot slipped, and he fell into the mud again.
Gao Yicheng climbed up and continued the chase, not knowing if it was because his head had been heavily hit, but his head grew more dizzy and his vision blurrier.
But he dared not stop.
Zheng Congwen glanced back and saw that mud-covered figure still pursuing; his heart panicked! All that remained in his mind was the thought—run as fast as he could!
But in the rice field he couldn't run fast at all, each step deep then shallow, feeling like stepping on cotton.
Sometimes his feet could even get stuck in the mud.
He couldn't pull them out no matter how hard he tried.
"Damn!"
In the darkness, Gao Yicheng suddenly let out an angry roar, like a hungry tiger pouncing on its prey, and he flung the mud‑stuck Zheng Congwen into the mire.
