Chapter 2854: Why Does My Wife Follow Me Every Day? 14

~6 min read 1,161 words

The passage was darker than outside; Jin Chen lightened his steps, walked close to the wall, and soon heard voices.

It was Tan Quan's voice, sounding furious.

"I said I won't take it!"

Another voice sounded, a man's voice slightly hoarse: "Jackal, fight a red-line match, and I'll overlook whatever you've done outside—you should know you signed a death contract back then."

"That was because you tricked me!"

Tan Quan's voice rose, furious: "I won't take it; I'm just here to return the medal, and I need to go back to eat and work!"

"Go back?" the man sneered, "You think this place is where you can come and go as you please?"

Jin Chen approached silently, stopped at the corner, and peered sideways.

Tan Quan stood at the lounge doorway; opposite him was a man wearing a purple mask, looking like a staff member here.

The purple-masked man stepped forward, his presence oppressive: "If you want to leave alive, just obey; don't force me to use measures. You should know we have plenty of ways to deal with the disobedient."

Tan Quan gritted his teeth, his whole body tensed, as if ready to pounce, emitting a beast-like threatening hiss from his throat.

But just then, he suddenly paused, twitching his nose.

He certainly couldn't smell any fragrance on Jin Chen, but his nose was keen—each familiar person had a distinct scent to him.

Jin Chen's heart tightened.

The next second, Tan Quan shouted toward his hiding spot: "Jin Chen! Come help me! I'll give you ten gold bars!"

Jin Chen: "……"

Is this guy a dog? He can even detect that.

The purple-masked man instantly became alert: "Who's there!"

Jin Chen sighed and stepped out of the shadows.

He still wore a black mask, revealing only the lower half of his face and thin, straight lips, yet his composed demeanor made the purple-masked man stare for a moment.

"Who are you?" the purple-masked man asked, tone unfriendly.

"Just passing by," Jin Chen said in a flat voice, "I heard a familiar voice and came to check."

The purple-masked man sized him up, saw he was just an ordinary spectator in a black mask, relaxed his guard a bit, but found it amusing—a mere human daring to meddle in beastfolk affairs.

"I advise you not to meddle," the purple-masked man said coldly.

"Otherwise, you'll stay too."

As his words fell, a staff member suddenly ran from the other end of the passage, leaned to the purple-masked man's ear, and whispered something.

The purple-masked man's expression changed.

When he looked at Jin Chen again, his eyes were completely different, his tone softened: "Oh, you're a VIP—my apologies for the rudeness."

Jin Chen: "?"

Tan Quan also looked at Jin Chen in surprise: "You're a VIP?"

Jin Chen: "……Not sure."

999 had helped him apply for the most ordinary identity to conceal his actions; where did this VIP status come from?

Just as Jin Chen was about to speak, he caught a flash of red in the dark passage behind the purple-masked man.

Almost simultaneously, his phone vibrated again.

Another unknown number sent a text.

-"Honey, don't be afraid, I'll take care of these things; you can take that dog with you if you like, but don't be too nice to him—I want to slaughter him, okay?"

Jin Chen's brows furrowed even tighter.

-"I really want to kiss you, but you can go back now; many people here will eye you, so don't flirt with others."

Jin Chen took a deep breath, suppressing the urge to smash his phone.

He lifted his head, his gaze icy toward the dark passage, playing with a short knife he'd picked up, his eyes even holding killing intent.

In the darkness, Yun Jian held his breath.

From a distance, he watched Jin Chen, his heart racing, a thin sheen of sweat on his back.

Besides nervousness, a near-pathological sense of pleasure welled up from his heart.

Jin Chen was looking for him, Jin Chen was angry, Jin Chen was looking in this direction with that gaze…

Yun Jian was excited, but hadn't planned to reveal himself yet.

Yun Jian stepped back a few paces, pressed a concealed mechanism on the wall, and a secret door in the passage shut, sealing off all sound.

At the same time, he called Jin Chen on his main line.

Through the observation slit on the secret door, Yun Jian could still see Jin Chen.

He walked slowly this way, his gaze still icy, each step exuding pressure.

A few seconds later, Jin Chen answered the call, his tone softening: "Yun Boss?"

Yun Jian exhaled a warm breath, his eyes unblinking as they fixed on Jin Chen through the slit.

He eased his tone, his voice tinged with helplessness: "Jin Chen, there's trouble at the flower shop; I'm a bit… unsure what to do—can you come help?"

Jin Chen's expression shifted slightly, worry unable to be hidden: "Wait for me to return; I'll be quick."

Yun Jian's lips twitched involuntarily: "……Okay."

He watched Jin Chen pause, then saw him turn and hurry off, not forgetting to tug Tan Quan along: "Something's happened at the flower shop."

"What! How's Song Cun?! Who dares touch him!" Tan Quan was even more frantic than Jin Chen, grabbing Jin Chen's arm and practically dragging him: "Hurry, hurry!"

The two vanished quickly down the passage's end; only then did Yun Jian slowly emerge from the darkness.

The purple-masked man immediately approached, bowing respectfully: "Mr. Yun."

Yun Jian didn't look at him, his gaze still on the direction Jin Chen had left: "From now on, don't intercept him—whatever he wants to investigate, no matter what, send it straight to him."

The purple-masked man stared, then said: "……Yes."

"All right," Yun Jian paused, then said, "Call two beastmen to come with me."

He calculated the time; taking a shortcut, he could reach the flower shop before Jin Chen.

On the way back, Jin Chen drove the car up to the speed limit.

Tan Quan in the passenger seat, from the initial anxious urging, kept muttering, "Song Cun, Song Cun, you must not have any trouble," and later, seeing Jin Chen weaving through traffic, almost enacting a real-life version of speed and passion, his gaze toward Jin Chen already filled with awe.

"Jin Chen... did you used to race cars?" Tan Quan asked, trembling.

Jin Chen ignored him, focusing on the road ahead.

Just now, in the underground boxing arena, Tan Quan's running speed was astonishingly fast, too fast, like some kind of... animal.

Jin Chen's brows furrowed tighter and tighter; he glanced at Tan Quan, still panting in the passenger seat, and asked, "Just what kind of person are you?"

Tan Quan's gaze darted away: "I... I'm just an ordinary person."

"Can an ordinary person run that fast?"

"I've trained!" Tan Quan insisted, "I've been training since childhood!"

Jin Chen didn't press further, but he already had a suspicion.
