Chapter 2864: Why Does My Wife Follow Me Around 24/7?
That afternoon, Jin Chen went out as usual to handle the orders and settlements for several regular suppliers.
Before leaving, he had informed Yun Jian, saying he would be back in about two or three hours and to let Yun Jian eat lunch first.
Yun Jian was repotting a newly arrived snow willow, his hands covered in dirt; hearing this, he nodded, stepped over, and kissed Jin Chen's corner of the mouth, saying, "Come back early."
At first everything was normal; after finishing his work, Yun Jian sent Jin Chen a message, but got no reply.
Yun Jian thought Jin Chen might be driving, or in the middle of talking with a supplier, and hadn't looked at his phone.
After another hour, Yun Jian had prepared a simple lunch, took a photo, and sent it over:
-I made your favorite dish; it's a pity you're not here—what would you like to eat tonight?
This time, too, it sank without a trace.
Yun Jian put down his phone, looked at the food on the table, and suddenly lost his appetite.
He ate alone, cleared the dishes, sat on the sofa, and began checking his phone frequently.
Two hours passed.
Three hours passed.
Jin Chen had said at most three hours.
In this city, the three raw-material shops, the farthest one being in the northern part, even counting traffic and necessary discussion time, should not exceed this limit.
Moreover, Jin Chen always handles things in an orderly manner; if he were truly delayed, he would certainly send a message ahead of time.
But now, a full four hours have passed.
No phone call, no message, nothing at all.
Yun Jian sat in the flower shop, holding his phone, the screen lighting up then dimming, dimming then lighting up.
He sent message after message to Jin Chen, feeling anxious and restless.
-Are you still busy? When will you be back?
-Why aren't you replying to my messages?
-Answer the phone.
-Why won't you answer my call? Honey, where are you?
-Jin Chen, where are you? I'm really worried about you—who are you with, and are you too busy to pick up the phone?
-Answer the phone answer the phone answer the phone answer the phone answer the phone answer the phone……
Yun Jian stared at the screen, dialed again, but still no one answered.
Anxiety wrapped around him, tightening more and more, almost making him unable to breathe.
He bit down hard on the tip of his tongue, harder and harder, until he tasted blood, his lips torn and bleeding.
Below is a long list of missed calls, a full fifteen of them.
Yun Jian sprang to his feet, flung open the door, and hurried downstairs.
The coffee shop.
The shop had just finished the after-work rush; now there were no customers, only Xiao Liu and another server clearing things away.
Seeing Yun Jian enter, Xiao Liu smiled and greeted him: "Boss Yun."
Yun Jian: "Where exactly did Jin Chen go today?"
Xiao Liu blinked, then said, "The boss went out to restock; didn't he tell you?"
"The three suppliers he works with are all in this city," Yun Jian said, "even counting social engagements, according to his usual routine the round-trip drive wouldn't exceed three hours—not even for the farthest one."
"Moreover, Jin Chen hasn't replied to my messages for four hours."
Xiao Liu: "……"
He and the other server exchanged a glance, both somewhat bewildered.
"We don't know either." Xiao Liu, intimidated by him, whispered, "The boss only said he was going to restock when he left; he didn't specify which supplier."
Yun Jian recalled something and asked, "Wasn't Tan Quan not in the shop today?"
Xiao Liu felt a chill under Yun Jian's gaze, "Yes, Tan Quan and Song Cun went out to relax, saying they'd be back later."
Yun Jian narrowed his eyes.
He didn't understand why Jin Chen insisted on interfering in Tan Quan and Song Cun's affairs.
Although he knew Jin Chen had his reasons, the anxiety and unease made him unable to help feeling jealous, even taking it out on others.
He must have gone to the underground arena again.
Yun Jian stared at his phone screen, his fingers flying over the keyboard, and sent another message.
-I've come to find you, honey.
——
At the same time, the underground boxing arena in the southern part of the city, District D.
Jin Chen was indeed here.
But this time, he really wasn't here for Tan Quan and Song Cun's sake.
He had driven to the eastern supplier to pick up goods, and on the way back his car was blocked by several black off‑road vehicles.
Several people got out of the cars, wearing purple masks, respectful yet firm, saying that someone had invited Boss Jin to come to the underground arena for a visit.
Jin Chen refused, but they handed him a folder.
He opened it and saw several sets of photos, all of Yun Jian from his younger years, some even looking like file photos.
There was also a genetic test sheet, densely packed with data, all of Yun Jian's.
Jin Chen stared at those photos for a few seconds, then closed the folder, the corner of his mouth curling into a faint arc, his eyes dangerous.
If Ling Gun Gun were here, he would surely shriek that the Host was about to stir up trouble again.
"Lead the way," he said.
So he was brought here, to Area D of the underground boxing arena.
Unlike the spectator area he had visited before, Area D is more concealed, even requiring special handling of communication equipment.
Jin Chen was brought into an office.
The office was spacious; a person sat on the sofa, wearing a red mask and a dark gray suit, looking about forty years old.
The person introduced himself as the private secretary of a certain big boss.
Song Cun and Tan Quan were also "invited" over, sitting on chairs on the other side of the office, their wrists loosely bound with specially made soft rubber tape, tape over their mouths allowing only muffled whimpers, their eyes filled with anxious worry—especially Tan Quan, whose eyes stared wide, constantly giving Jin Chen meaningful looks.
Jin Chen, however, acted as if he hadn't noticed, even taking a moment to survey the office décor before sitting down on the sofa opposite them, relaxed and even a bit languid.
To outsiders, he still carried a faint coffee aroma, indeed resembling an ordinary coffee shop boss.
But anyone who catches Yun Jian's eye, this secretary dare not take lightly.
"What brings you here?" Jin Chen said, his voice calm.
The secretary smiled, voice gentle, "Boss Jin, a pleasure."
"I asked you to come today mainly to…… talk about Boss Yun's affairs."
The secretary's tone carried a hint of meaning, "Boss Yun cares about you, which we all know, but as an ordinary person, provoking a beastman like him…… you must be afraid of him, right?"
"Afraid?" Jin Chen raised an eyebrow, as if the word felt somewhat novel, "Why do you ask that?"
The secretary wasn't in a hurry either, leisurely beginning to list Yun Jian's terrifying deeds.
He even clapped his hands, having his subordinates bring in a few beastmen.
Those beastmen all looked miserable.
Some were missing arms or legs, some were blind, some had faces covered in scars, completely disfigured.
They told Jin Chen what Yun Jian had done to them.
A beastman missing his right arm said he had merely accidentally knocked a book from Yun Jian's hand as he passed by, and Yun Jian crippled his arm.
A beastman with a face crisscrossed by scars choked up, saying she had merely muttered a few words behind his back about Yun Jian's appearance and conduct, and the next day someone slashed her face with over a dozen cuts.
A beastman blind in one eye spoke in a dull voice, saying he had merely annoyed Yun Jian, whereupon Shengsheng gouged out one of his eyes.
These beastmen, each story brief, but each ending gruesome.
He bluntly said Yun Jian's temperament was violent and fickle, his methods cruel, capable of inflicting extreme torture on others over the slightest trifle.
Song Cun and Tan Quan listened on the side, stunned.
Jin Chen listened silently, his face expressionless, even picking up the water cup on the tea table and taking a sip.
After everyone had finished speaking, the secretary finally spoke, his tone tinged with pity, "Boss Jin, do you understand now?"
"Boss Yun isn't as harmless as he appears; he is a high-level beastman, and……"
"His emotions are very unstable."
"Being with him is no different from scheming with a tiger for its skin; if one day you anger him, or he grows tired of you, your fate……"
Jin Chen set down the water cup, lifted his gaze to him, then also looked at the miserable beastmen nearby.
He tilted his head, his gaze behind the black mask casually falling on one of them, his voice flat.
"Does Yun Jian merely think you annoyed him?"
That beastman blinked, then nodded.
Jin Chen asked again, "Then why did you get in his way and provoke him?"
The questioned beastman: "???"
The other beastmen: "???"
Secretary: "……"
All the persuasion and threats he had prepared were blocked back by that unconventional counterquestion.
Jin Chen, however, seemed truly to be pondering the question seriously, "Since you know he's not easy to provoke, why go provoke him anyway?"
"If you hadn't actively provoked him, crossed his bottom line, would he attack you for no reason? In this place, the law of the jungle is the norm."
"Since you chose to survive here, you should understand the rules: if your skill is inferior or you harbor ill intent, the outcome you meet is hardly anyone else's fault."
Jin Chen's answer—where does it resemble that of an ordinary coffee shop boss?
The secretary's face beneath the mask shifted unpredictably.
He realized he might have severely underestimated the man before him.
Just then, the office door was knocked on urgently.
A subordinate hurried in, leaned close to the secretary's ear, and whispered a few words.
The secretary waved his hand, sending the subordinate back, then looked at Jin Chen with a complex tone, "It seems Mr. Yun cares about you more than we imagined."
Jin Chen looked at him composure, as if waiting for something.
"Just right, you will get to see with your own eyes what kind of person he really is." The secretary said.
He pressed the button on the remote in his hand.
A screen on the office wall lit up, beginning to project surveillance footage.
The footage showed the entrance of Area D.
In the image, Yun Jian's figure appeared abruptly.
His dark brown curly hair was somewhat disheveled, his face expressionless, but his deep black eyes churned with an almost violent coldness.
He held a gun in his hand, with bodies piled behind him.
All were the guards of Area D, trained beastmen, now lying sprawled on the ground—some unconscious, some struggling—none able to stand.
Yun Jian didn't even glance at them; he merely lifted his eyes to the surveillance camera.
Those deep, dark eyes on the screen were frightening to the point of being terrifying.
Then he raised his hand, aiming the gun's muzzle at the electronic lock on the entrance.
Bang—
A muffled thud.
The lock was destroyed.
Yun Jian pushed the door open and walked in.
The screen switched, becoming the surveillance footage inside D Zone.
Yun Jian walked inside, shooting all the way, and everyone who tried to stop him fell before him.
High-ranking beastmen, even if herbivorous, impose a deadly sense of oppression on lower-ranking beastmen.
And the aura Yun Jian released at this moment was icy, violent, dark, and murderous.
The office was deathly silent.
Song Cun and Tan Quan were frightened by the Yun Jian, who was completely different from his usual peaceful self.
The secretary's face turned pale, and the fingers holding the remote trembled slightly.
Only Jin Chen.
He was still sitting on the sofa, relaxed, with even the corners of his mouth curled up.
